One of the things that I've come to appreciate the most about the 6th generation of gaming is the fact that you got the whole game. No dlc, no day one patches. You popped the disc in and play. On top of all of that, the games were just better in my opinion.

I often think about the early to mid 2000s PS2, GameCube, XBOX era. The industry was so full of creativity and freedom at the time, and so many classics because of it. Developers were able to take risk back then that resulted in some if the greatest games of all time being made. Def Jam vendetta started out as a crazy idea that two dudes who loved hip hop thought up and that along with its sequel became a classic. Something like that can just never happen again in gaming and it’s so sad man. Biggest thing to me that’s apparent here is that developers used to be run by gamers. Now it’s just run by corporate suits who literally only care about money over quality. I love gaming, but I’m glad to know I’m not the only one getting sick of what it’s becoming. Thank god we got to live through a time where creativity could thrive to give us the best memories and experiences through the games we got back then.

Here's what I miss, the movie tie-in games that used to come out especially the Harry Potter ones. And I still miss that music of that decade (nu metal, post-hardcore, indie rock) always paid homage to gaming culture. If it wasn't for the whole gaming/music/movie "grunge horror" of that time a lot of my personal favorite franchises wouldn't still be around today like Resident evil and Silent Hill. Gaming slowly started dying from 8th gen and on, once they started making micro transactions and unfinished games with promises of dlc. Even Xbox one was doing horribly and was marketed as an all-in-one system, it’s should be about gaming first and foremost
I agree. They started pulling off dlc's and patches come the 7th gen but it still wasn't required to play and enjoy the game, you could still play the base game and get your money's worth. It felt like the 7th gen that part was optional, nowadays it seems like it's almost required just to play the ENTIRE game.
I do wish you elaborated a bit more on what Nintendo was doing during this era. I'd argue that this was one of their most creative and experimental eras which have also had massive influences on the gaming industry to this day, and it feels incomplete to leave them out. Otherwise I really enjoyed this video, I've been talking about how important the 6th generation of gaming has been for years and I'm glad to see those sentiments shared.
yet another banger video, good job! i grew up playing ps2 era games (and still play many today) so its neat to hear how that era impacted modern games 😁💪
I hate to sound pessimistic, but I don't think we will ever see a video game generation that good ever again. Most of the games on my top 20 of all time list are from the 6th generation. It still blows my mind that all of these great games came out in the same gen: Resident Evil 4 Metal Gear Solid 2&3 Metroid Prime Ninja Gaiden Black Devil May Cry 1&3 Half Life 2 Halo 1&2 Silent Hill 2 & 3 & 4 Resident Evil 1 Remake Forbidden Siren 2 Shadow of the Colossus Final Fantasy X Kingdom Hearts 1&2 Gta 3 & San Andreas & Vice City Super Smash Melee Wind Waker Morrowind Deus Ex Knights of the Old republic Tekken 4 & 5 & Tag Tournament Soul Calibur 2&3 Dynasty Warriors 3 & 4 & 5 God of War 1&2 God Hand Okami Viewtiful Joe Shenmue 1&2 Hitman Blood Money Bully Midnight Club And many more! I believe video games have already peaked to be honest.
I agree 100 percent video games have already peaked the proof is in the remakes, remasters, reboots, just look at all the top games in the last few years the majority of them have been remakes. IMO the 2000's was the best decade of gaming and it's not just nostalgia talking so many games still hold up from that era.
This was a really good watch! The advertisements where something else back then! Also nice to see an image of Medal of honor Frontline when you talked about your favorite games of the generation, a banger shooter!
I'll always remember those days fondly. Playing Jet Set Radio Future as a kid. I eventually managed to buy another copy so I could 100% that game on my Xbox 360. I don't know if it's the best, but it's one of my favorites. Also, now that you mention those stupid filters in the 7th, I finally know the reason why I had to turn my TV brightness all the way up so I could see anything on the screen. Even though the 7th generation has better specs, I feel that the 6th has more vibrant colors when it needs and that really helps to set the tone better. When the games are dark though, they're not impossible to see.
6th gen, particularly PS2, was like the wild west of gaming, with so many and diverse mid-budget games rising and failing. You no longer see that these days.
Big respect for putting in "Nas - It ain't hard to tell" instrumental. I have my own version where I rap to it on my channel but that was like 15 years ago:) Great video - you forgot to mention Midnight Club 1 & especially 2 from Rockstar, unforgettable.
6th gen was peak gaming, at least during the 3D era. Those that prefer 2D I guess would pick the 4th gen (SNES/Genesis). I started gaming on the 5th gen and the jump to the 6th was incredible at the time, it felt like the limitations for 3D gaming were off and devs finally unleash the true potential. The 7th gen was still good but signs of decline were already there, like there was less creativity and game genres just dying off entirely for not being profitable enough along with creeping monetization. Also the jump to HD wasn't as impressive since it didn't innovate much other than cleaning up the image quality.
There is the GBA for the 6th gen. Great for 2D games, but since it was a handheld, it gets forgotten about. Sure, the ports aren't the definitive editions, but it lots of great titles.
5th gen should have been a 2d generation, except the N64. Both the Saturn and Playstation were sprite pushing monsters. Especially Saturn with the RAM expansion.
When you mentioned Tony Hawk’s Underground being your most favorite game of all time I felt like I wanted to cry tears of joy lol. I think it’s the most underrated game of all time.
Wholeheartedly agree, this gen of consoles was revolutionary. I’ve sunk countless hours into this gen, particularly on the PS2 and Dreamcast, although I was fortunate enough to own all of them while they were still relevant eventually. They all added a little something has has become foundational in the industry to this day.
One thing I like about this generation is how varied the games are. In the 5th generation everything was a collectothon platformer, in the 7th generation everything was a first person shooter, and now everything is an open world RPG. I don't really get that feeling with the 6th generation though, it's best and most influential games are much more diverse
This was one of the last gens when developers actually added things to the games because fuck it, it sounds fun. Starting from the next generation, things started to get formulaic and much more guided by what was trendy.
Yeah, I'm very biased since I grew up during this generation, but I think gens 6 and 7 were the peak of videogames. The thing that I think has lead to the decline of the industry was incorporating online connectivity though, which initially was fantastic, but has lead to 2 of the most toxic practices in gaming to become the norm, those practices being the live service game, and the broken release that is fixed much later. Both of these kinds of games were not possible until internet connections were normalized for console and the internet has basically just given devs free range to cut corners and sell the laziest "DLC" and microtransactions imaginable.
These were the games I played as a kid. Man what a time! This is when you played games because they were actually fun. The next generation was fantastic but it was the beginning of the end. This generation was the last purely fun one
Games from this generation were modern enough to hvae cool graphics and decent physics but old enough to not have microtransactions and need one year after release to get fixed.
6th generation gaming is something i’ll forever love. many games were made with creativity, love, and soul. now games are just pay to win or copy and paste
I wished to have experienced it, I was born in the era (2002) but when I got old enough to remember something it has passed already, my first console was a Xbox 360 in 2013
That’s why everyone should just buy the OG consoles with the OG games. Screw ports and emulation and all that crap. These games need to be played the way they were meant to be played.
My favourite generation for couple reasons: 1.The 3d tech has already matured (like 2d with Genesis/Snes/TG16), and it still looks good, especialy considering that now when we're used to realistic graphics, it's easier to enjoy good artstyle. 2. Games were cheaper to make, so there were more games, and they could adress a certain niche without ruining profits, and AA games were a thing. 3. Diversity of games, closely related to previous point about costs, but also there was more unique perpectives on basic game mechanics and control schemes, which resulted in games that not only told a different story but had different gameplay. 4. Finished games at launch. Yeah bugs were a thing, and some games run horribly, but most of the time the game at launch was 100% playable. 5. and also the games themselfs, it is my favourite period in racing and shooters (actually shooters are a tie with current market because of indie developers), also amazing period for platformers, xtreme sports games, jrpg, hack 'n slash and so on.
I can mostly speak about PC gaming in that era because I never had a console, and the 6th gen was a time when most companies didn't really care about PC unless they were a PC focused company, the likes of Valve, Blizzard, Bethesda, BioWare and Epic at the time. And these companies were releasing groundbreaking games at those times for PC. On the PC side, that was the era when MMO's were at their best, RPG's were at their best, strategy games were at their best.
Most companies still don't care about PC 😂 if they do show some love it's months after a game was released for consoles and then they deliver a terrible port to PC
I grew up gaming in the 90s. There was a lot of innovation back then and you actually had more attempts at consoles by Philips, Atari etc. But yes, I agree that this era was the best era in gaming. Not only because the games itself, but you still had 3-4 gaming magazines & also you had tv shows dedicated to gaming back then. TechTv was a great network. I think gaming simply peaked back then... Technology improved vastly and many Gen Xers were still in the gaming industry. I think one of the biggest problems with the industry now is you have to many millennials and Gen Zers making games. Gen Xers were the perfect mix of Pride in their work, work ethic and imagination and innovation.
I know what you mean, but I don't think the younger generation is exactly the problem, but more of the circumstances of the current situation. AAA Games are more expensive to make today and it seems like the strict deadlines to make said games are starting to make the cracks show. Deadlines were also strict back in the day (many of the 6th Gen had crunch development) but since games at the time were simpler, it was much more manageable to get an acceptable result. Sequels back in the day also were more iterative from the last game release so they came out faster (usually the fastest was 1 year apart but there were other games that were 2 years apart...check out the GTA 3 era games). Even then, there were still released games that suffered from the sped up development cycles (which I imagine are not only exclusive to 6th gen). On the GameCube, games such as Super Mario Sunshine and The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker had some major content cuts in order to be able to release on schedule. It's a miracle they still ended up as good as they were; game development is hard!
@@ConcavePgons Everything you said is plausible. Games are more complex than they use to be. Which is why in every generation we see smaller and smaller game libraries and less and less Indy developers. The 6th gen is when many of those smaller developers got absorbed. I was watching a documentary on Spyro the Dragon and that game was basically created in a garage 😂. Good luck buying a development kit and developing a game in your garage on this technology. You could literally have a main group of 10-12 man crew and develope a game back in the 5th gen.
What I liked about this era was that while yes, we had many great games. We also weren’t glued to the screen as kids and would actually go outside and ride bikes with friends. Kids these days are glued to a screen 24/7.
I play my PS2 to this day, (mainly because I missed out on the PS2 as a whole and found one at a flea market, modded it and have everything at my fingertips back in 2020.) Games were just fun back then...nowadays gaming is like another job, they focus on hyper-realistic graphics but the games are too long and NOT fun.
The 5th generation of gaming revolutionised 3D gaming. The 6th Gen revolutionised video game franchises. The 7th Gen revolutionised video game consoles. Each brought something new to the table, but it's thanks to the 6th Gen that we have Ratchet and Clank, Jak and Daxter, Halo, Sly Cooper, God of War, Shadow of the Colossus, Fable, Forza, and Knights of the Old Republic
our culture peaks creatively between the 6th and 7th console generation. Everything afterwards is the afterbirth of what came before/was set into motion earlier. I.e Rockstar w GTA, Blizzard milking WoW/Overwatch/Old Ips, Value not making any new games just acquiring mods of pre-existing ones.

Wow, that dreamcast advertising blurred the lines of fantasy and reality quite well. It was like a dream broadcast. A dreamcast.
This the the 3rd video I’ve watched this week about how superior this era was for gaming, and this says a lot about the current state of the industry.
It felt like the 7th gen that part was optional, nowadays it seems like it's almost required just to play the ENTIRE game.
renderware will always have a place in my heart
I do wish you elaborated a bit more on what Nintendo was doing during this era. I'd argue that this was one of their most creative and experimental eras which have also had massive influences on the gaming industry to this day, and it feels incomplete to leave them out.
Otherwise I really enjoyed this video, I've been talking about how important the 6th generation of gaming has been for years and I'm glad to see those sentiments shared.
The beginning with the Bully theme (the most Underrated game of the entire 6th Gen)
*MASTERPIECE*
Great video man glad I came across your channel always looking for new vids regarding that era. Nostalgia at its finest
yet another banger video, good job! i grew up playing ps2 era games (and still play many today) so its neat to hear how that era impacted modern games 😁💪
I hate to sound pessimistic, but I don't think we will ever see a video game generation that good ever again. Most of the games on my top 20 of all time list are from the 6th generation. It still blows my mind that all of these great games came out in the same gen:
Resident Evil 4
Metal Gear Solid 2&3
Metroid Prime
Ninja Gaiden Black
Devil May Cry 1&3
Half Life 2
Halo 1&2
Silent Hill 2 & 3 & 4
Resident Evil 1 Remake
Forbidden Siren 2
Shadow of the Colossus
Final Fantasy X
Kingdom Hearts 1&2
Gta 3 & San Andreas & Vice City
Super Smash Melee
Wind Waker
Morrowind
Deus Ex
Knights of the Old republic
Tekken 4 & 5 & Tag Tournament
Soul Calibur 2&3
Dynasty Warriors 3 & 4 & 5
God of War 1&2
God Hand
Okami
Viewtiful Joe
Shenmue 1&2
Hitman Blood Money
Bully
Midnight Club
And many more!
When games came complete on the disc, major AAA developers/publishers took risk and made diverse games, and online play was still in its infancy.
Dang man you promised the next one wouldn't take 4 months.... Subbed hope for more content!!
God I miss those commercials. Advertising just had an earnest way about them.
Edit: PS CZcams is recommending this video on peoples home page
this era makes me old.
Nah the era doesn't make you old. It's your age that does that
This is great to remember and relax to. Thanks for putting this all together. Super chill.
good use of the nas instrumental i subbed for that alone! retro gaming and golden era rap go together too well
The fact that Jet Set Radio Future opened this video… I am so happy right now!
Man you had me at the It ain't hard to tell instrumental and referencing Chad Warden. Great video man keep it up!!
This was a really good watch! The advertisements where something else back then! Also nice to see an image of Medal of honor Frontline when you talked about your favorite games of the generation, a banger shooter!
Nice use of the It Ain’t Hard to Tell instrumental, great video man. 💪🏾
Good video, you earned a subscriber 👍 keep up the good work ❤️
no idea why youtube is marking this video under gta 5, i didn't even use any footage from that game lmao
Man I love gaming videos from the late 90s to mid 2000s 🙏🏻😂
I think it’s the most underrated game of all time.
unreal video, i'm 29 and grew up on the 6th gen
This was the Era that gaming became seen as something that wasn't just for kids.
6:58 Same here man. THUG is a classic
This was one of the last gens when developers actually added things to the games because fuck it, it sounds fun. Starting from the next generation, things started to get formulaic and much more guided by what was trendy.
The generation that brought me into gaming!
You know the video's gonna be lit when the Caucasian with the Cowboy Bebop profile picture starts talking about the early 2000's.
Both of these kinds of games were not possible until internet connections were normalized for console and the internet has basically just given devs free range to cut corners and sell the laziest "DLC" and microtransactions imaginable.
the nas instrumental threw me off dawg, amazing video 10/10
Man this video really speaks to my soul. This is EXACTLY how I feel about the 6th Gen of gaming.
These were the games I played as a kid. Man what a time! This is when you played games because they were actually fun. The next generation was fantastic but it was the beginning of the end. This generation was the last purely fun one
Goddamn it's so rare to come across a video essay that uses my era music and media to make me miss it more. Liked and subbed fam 🫡
Loving the Nas in the background
This video is good af my dude
You should make more like it.
banger video, great music choices too
Great vid dude
What was the background music played in the last 2 minutes of the video? It's familiar
6th gen is the golden era of gaming I would give anything to revive it
Games from this generation were modern enough to hvae cool graphics and decent physics but old enough to not have microtransactions and need one year after release to get fixed.
6th generation gaming is something i’ll forever love. many games were made with creativity, love, and soul. now games are just pay to win or copy and paste
Hey mate! Love the soundtrack of your vids. Where do you get the instrumental (no lyric) versions of the songs?
Best Gen of Gaming
This video is "way much more better" than any other I watched today.
This was probably my favourite gen. Back when games were created to be as great as could be from day one
Excellent video
Glad I was young enough for the 5th generation leading into the 6th was such a time to be a gamer
Holy crap, please someone tell me what game the background music is from at 1:09? Is it conkers bad fur day?
I wished to have experienced it, I was born in the era (2002) but when I got old enough to remember something it has passed already, my first console was a Xbox 360 in 2013
Outside of Nintendo I feel like a lot of modern games forgot how to have FUN
That’s why everyone should just buy the OG consoles with the OG games. Screw ports and emulation and all that crap. These games need to be played the way they were meant to be played.
Ssx 3 and bully still in rotation
Still epic AF to hear the PS2 turn on sound and boot up GTA or Scarface and truecrime New York 🔥🔥🔥
The bully music hits
My favourite generation for couple reasons:
1.The 3d tech has already matured (like 2d with Genesis/Snes/TG16), and it still looks good, especialy considering that now when we're used to realistic graphics, it's easier to enjoy good artstyle.
Memory unlocked with that brute force reference my god 6:10
I miss the feeling and excitement of playing video games compared to now
By far my favorite gaming gen, don’t think it will ever be topped
back when games had depth
I can mostly speak about PC gaming in that era because I never had a console, and the 6th gen was a time when most companies didn't really care about PC unless they were a PC focused company, the likes of Valve, Blizzard, Bethesda, BioWare and Epic at the time. And these companies were releasing groundbreaking games at those times for PC. On the PC side, that was the era when MMO's were at their best, RPG's were at their best, strategy games were at their best.
Most companies still don't care about PC 😂 if they do show some love it's months after a game was released for consoles and then they deliver a terrible port to PC
Nice video, dude.
Song name from the last part???
What I liked about this era was that while yes, we had many great games. We also weren’t glued to the screen as kids and would actually go outside and ride bikes with friends. Kids these days are glued to a screen 24/7.
I play my PS2 to this day, (mainly because I missed out on the PS2 as a whole and found one at a flea market, modded it and have everything at my fingertips back in 2020.) Games were just fun back then...nowadays gaming is like another job, they focus on hyper-realistic graphics but the games are too long and NOT fun.
My room still looks like that
great video
U deserve more subs bruv
Gran Turismo, snake eater, final fantasy, silent hill, forbidden siren, tekken 4, vice city, SOCOM, too many to list. PS2 is king.
