Great video, Ladyfractic! Very clearly and transparently presented. My best wishes to your growing family!
We see what you did there! Thank you for the support - it keeps the channel alive and we couldn't it without our supporters đ
@@RetroRecipes You are always welcome. I remember Crystal Pepsi very well back then. Was short lived...
I was surprised not to see the Apple eMate, that was one of the first translucent gadgets I ever saw, and I believe it was Jony Ive's first transparent doodad as well.
Clear cases started in the 80s not as a craze, but for legit reasons. Prisons. Electronics that were see-though could not be used to hide anything coming into the prison. They spilled over into popular culture, but they existed for a purpose initially.
Yea, if someone had asked me why we saw a spike in clear cases, I would have guessed that it was companies trying to market their "prison models" to the general public.
Yes, I seem to remember Techmoan doing a video on transparent prison tech!
@@RetroJack He did.
@@RetroJack Yep, that´s what I was thinking during the video. Prison tech seeped into the pop culture. Anyway, I like it :-)
The small CRT tv at 6:47 is meant for prisons, as a matter of fact. Look at that "Secure View" inscription. That's a lineup from (the Chinese bought remnants of) RCA that continued into flat panel TV times.
This is exactly the kind of show that I have enjoyed my whole life. The entertainment value comes from the information provided, not from using it to just make a different version of something that you already made. Your presentation skills are equally exceptional Lady Fractic!! I look forward to more in the future.
Can't wait to watch BabyFrac'tics first Commodore 64 unboxing
Congrats to you two with the expected baby-fractic
So. Many. Transparency. Puns! Any more and you would have ended up in prism. I love it! We could clearly see what you were upto there. Great episode (as ever).
@@CookingWithCows indeed they do! Used to work there, sadly (I left each day, for clarity)
It's funny because clear cases are prison tech so jailbirds can't hide stuff in their TVs/devices
Congrats Ladyfractic... soon to be Mommyfractic. To the plastic cases... Was it one of those situations of "Let's do it because we can"? And then, surprisingly it caught on? And does the clear case really explain how it works, I'd say it probably makes the mystery even more curious? To be honest: It's really a box of magic happening inside our electronic devices. I marvel at it even knowing how it works and I work in the industry as a firmware developer.
Congratulations future Mommyfractic! You guys are going to be great parents. Imagine growing up around all that tech, for starters.
Clear tech is extremely popular in prisons too. Makes it hard to hide your shank in a TV
That's true. Techmoan have an episode of that topic.
If transparent is just a marketing phase, I see right through it. Great video.
You should be a writer!
The clear Game Boy was released as part of the "Play-it-Loud" series in 1995, not 1989. The only Game Boy available before the Play-it-Loud series was the original off-white Game Boy whose color scheme had not changed in almost six years.
The prison industry is currently keeping transparent tech alive and well. All electronic items and gadgets that prisoners are allowed to purchase, only are available in clear polycarbonate cases, so prisoners can't hide contraband.
Everything was so much clearer back then.
Funny how I'm from the early 90s and have no clue of more than half of what's said in this channel most of the time (especially when it's about Macs), this channel still gives me a soul comfort I cannot explain.
Really enjoyed that Ladyfractic! What an interesting set of products to cover. I'd forgotten about most of them.
I had/have both a Gameboy color and a Gameboy advance in translucent. The Color is the exact model shown and the advance is the translucent clear.
Transparent cassettes were great back in the day, you could see how far you were into the tape easier! In the late 90s I had a Motorola Startac(the small one) and swapped it's case out for a clear one I spray painted blue inside, it was so cool looking(but smelled badly like the paint). Great episode! I had forgotten some of the things that went all clear, maybe something cool to do with a modern smartphone, probably easier to get a case that just looks like you can see through them :)
You remind me of a school teacher in this video. Could be the clipboard, maybe the educational content, I don't know but the part that really gets me is you have such strong "good with kids" vibes in this! Like a genuine teacher that would actually care about their students. Just thought I would mention it!
I wish the world was more transparent overall. This video brings back so many memories. Thank you!!!
It's time for a big raise for whomever runs your pun department! Congrats on the future babyfractic.
Ladyfratic and dad jokes now that's a combo we need. This was an awesome watch and so made me miss the mid 80s to early 2000s imo the golden years of tech as we wasn't hit with super new upgrades every 6 months so things felt more special imo. Always nice to see a Ladyfratic video and am looking forward to more like this. Keep up the great work guys and have a lovely weekend. As always take care đ
This channel was already full of dad jokes. Just imagine how much more intense they'll be when Perifractic is actually a dad.
She did not seem too keen on those jokes at first but eventually gave in completely. đ
3:00 when SNL made their parody skit of Crystal Gravy. đ
The way Junifractic tasted the diskette was just a perfect moment. Excellent video!
I love transparent tech! Especially in a blue/violet color tone.
Remember hearing that prisons use to prefer transparent cased electrical goods so the prison officers could see if anything illicit was being stashed away.
Great episode Ladyfractic :D
1:40 the clear landline telephone was used as the cover for Chuck Klostermanâs book The Nineties.
Fun episode. The Computer Museum of America in Roswell Georgia has a coffee table made from translucent iMacs. It is truly a thing of beauty.
I really love transparent tech and would love to see new tech products with transparent shells
Babyfractic? MAZEL TOV!
There are tech channels and then there are you. Never stop â¤
Great recipide, I clearly see what you were going for their , very clear-cut unclouded conclusion đ. Couldn't be more transparent đ. I will stop now đĽş. You can see-through my transparent bad jokes đ. Sorry ladies and gents đâ¤
Loved this generation of computers, consoles and electronics. Radical dude! ;-)
CONGRATULATIONS!!! to you both!!! xxxxx
8:49 "we're all still just children wanting to sneak a peak inside of our toys."
Agreed. The reason liminal space nostalgia theory is so popular and by extension The Backrooms and Vaporwave along with whatever the 2000s descriptor is titled.
It's mostly wanting to be a kid, once again. That childhood curious nature is something most of us if not all of us took for granted.
Swatch had see through watches in 1984-85, and at Expo 86 they had an entire exhibition hall with hundreds of watches available.
Congratulations on the addition !!!!! Excellent episode as always :)
Nicely done Ladyfractic. Fascinating look at the history of trendy transparency in everyday tech. Absolute best of health to you and yours.
I bought so many of those transparent floppy discs for school in the 90s/00s.
The problem with clear plastics is they tended to be brittle, pretty much every controller I encountered had broken screw posts.
Really enjoyed the short-take video Ladyfractic. Well done!
Super fun video! Congratulations Fractics! đ
Thank you Ladyfractic & puppyfractic for a great show. Love you work always. Cheers
Love this episode, so much nostalgia... but I've gotta' mention it, the G3 iMac famously removed the floppy drive in favor of cd-roms, although an external drive was an option. Had to scratch that itch!
The OG, Bondi Blue iMac started a real transparent electronics revolution, though-including kitchen appliances, not just a few wearable/portable/conspicuous devices, here and there, which was more of a spattering. I donât think Iâd even call it a âtrend,â before that - more like a random product, here and there, especially color transparents. However, I gotta say, I love my OG Halo SE transparent green X-Box, too - maybe as much as your clear C64. â¤ď¸
Now, if I could just get a clear, transparent, Atari 800 case - to show off all the metal that shielded the electronics from the FCC... đ
I like clear non-cloudy non-colured casings, and happily with polished metal struts/stand-offs (like a MiSTer case or similar).
That was really cool to watch. Great job!
This was a fun episode! Well done LadyFractic!
Great Episode Lady Fractic from the History to the intuative insight and wonderful humor. Thanks and God Bless Y'all đ¤
Yeah that was refreshing and congratulations on the new baby! Thanks
Congratulations on your growing family - that's the big news here!
Wow! I did not know about that car from the 30's! How utterly fascinating and as soon as this video ends I'm off to find out more about that!
Awesome video Lady Fractic, but your co-host stole my heart đâ¤
Transparent Tech aka Prison Tech.
There's a company in Germany making transparent Atari 800XL and 130XE cases.
I have to commend you on the production values of your videos. They're really strong. Your videos are fun, informative, and look great.
Transparent plastic cases aged better than white ones. I'm all for a come back of these :)
I also love this new thematic format, well done the Fractics! ;)
I wonder if it still yellows over time? Retrobrighting this would also be a bit difficult if it did - wouldn't it? Just a thought or two.
Another transparently top quality show! Congratulations to the Fractic family for increasing the Fractic to human ratio
Thanks for the fun video, Ladyfractic. I had a transparent Swatch in the 80s, and the phone in the 90s. đ
I love transparent things. I have always got transparent Swatch watches - although they do yellow!
OMG, finally đ Best wishes!!!
I loved the clear plastic tech. The blue mac knockoff windows computer was my dream computer. Still want to get one to this day. Clear cyan is my ideal style.
Congrats to the fractic family!
A very slick video Ladyfractic. The effort and professionalism that went into producing this are incredibly clear. I must admit I wasn't a big fan of the clear plastic trend although I have fond memories of TDK transparent audio cassettes which looked very cool. Even if the music I recorded on them wasn't. Also, my head demagnetized from Tandy looked very good in a clear case.
I have noticed CASIO releasing their 83-GT calculator in a transparent case so it appears this fad is returning.
Mind you the first computer I saw on television that sported a transparent case was the fictitious ORAC from Blakes 7, not the ORIC from Tangerine.
The plexiglass car wouldn't be a choice for gangsters and smugglers who prefer to keep things hidden from sight. It probably wouldn't survive a high-impact crash either.
Superbly edited and produced by you and Peri. Great job.
Also congrats to both of you on your up-and-coming new arrival.
Oh wow, didn't knew how many classic hardware came in transparent cases, apart from maybe the iMac and N64.
Well, last year I put my Amiga 1200 in a transparent case incl. LED mod. Just for the look of it. đ
Another great episode Ladyfractic! đ
I remember techmoan also did a video about transparent tech
Interesting fact: clear tech was actually signed off by the Prison services! There's a Techmoan video regarding it! Having clear technology in a Prison, it's a no brainer! Can't hide anything naughty.
Techmoan video:
m.czcams.com/video/O3PfsndsihY/video.html
So while it looks cool, it serves a purpose too. That's probably why Gameboys & N64s were issued in candy clear colours too.
Hi Retro Recipes, your Amiga computer is not broken, its the "Byte Bandit virus" flashing capslock and keyboard fail is typical for byte bandit virus, just turn of the computer and on again the virus will be gone, but if you load an infected disk, then the virus will be back with the same sympthoms. Just format those disks and you will be fine, then the virus should be gone.
A clear winner! On the flipside however, does anyone remember 7-up Gold? They went the other direction, by adding color to their clear soda, and it went about as well as the Crystal Pepsi thing did :(
Christian nice new look 0:51.... I also remember those PC cases
My newly-bought Acer Predator Orion 5000 640 ub-12 is not only transparent on the side but in the front as well. AND it lights up inside as well as the keyboard (I'd like one of thsose in transparent). I'm thining of adopting as a theme for this mean machine the Beatls' I'M LOOKING THROUGH YOU
This is transparently a great video.
As it happens I felt a vague nostalgia when the colorful transparent iMacs came out. There was a period in the 70's (early?) when transparency in toys made an appearance. That's probably where my sense of nostalgia came from. I think the juicy colors mixed with clarity are the most appealing. A shame you did not mention how Apple conned the courts into essentially banning 1-piece transparent computers (e-Machines was the trial test victim). Ladyfractic why you no talk about our favorite? (Transparent shirts!)
What a cool video đ
Liked it a lot, great little travel in time â¤
Still love my transparent N64
Dad jokes are all on point. Yâall are going to be great parents!
Mum jokes đ
Sorry - Mum-to-be jokes.
The guys at Flipper Zero are thinking about making a clear chassis (limited edition). I'm ready for the transparent cases to make a comeback. I saw a transparent laptop in the 1995 movie "Hackers" and I was hooked. I'll link this video to their forums to give them a little push. ;)
I have one of the clear land lines and use it even now with a Bluetooth adapter. scares the crap out of me when it goes off but its cool to see it light up.
Mommyfractic! Congratulations! Now Ill go watch the rest :)
Congrats !
I'm a huge sucker for transparent tech. Back in 2002 or so, I made a custom clear version of the square white iBook using a Japanese replacement case, and more recently have used the MacEffects case on my Mac SE, as well as a clear mechanical keyboard to use with it. I've also made some clear iPods, which was fun.
Congratulations!
I got that clear telephone for Christmas 1987 and did a lot of prank calls on it.
Damn nice episode! Love the music so much! =D
Great presentation. You and Perifractic really have a knack for making videos! Keep up the good work!
Thank you for your kind words! Means a lot đđš
@@RetroRecipes No problem. BTW, I tried to get my 1983 C64 running, but no luck. Got a recapped one from the the flea lagoon and will probably get a cap kit for the 1983 later. Thanks again for all the helpful information!
I loved crystal Pepsi! It was cheaper than the regular stuff and didn't have dyes in it.
Awesome presentation!
I love the transparent stuff, they're fun and iconic of an era.
Unrelated, but I'm worried for Phillip Schofield at the moment. Not just because I grew up with him on tv either... Ugh đ
Ironically, most iMac users did not use those clear floppies, as the iMac didn't come with a floppy drive (although there were also transparent iMac-style USB floppy drives you could get). Also, in Japan, Sony put out several transparent versions of the Playstation 1 and 2. I have an imported Japan PS2 with a semitransparent smoke black case which was apparently extremely common!
I actually liked Crystal Pepsi back in the day. Mostly because it was the only soda that was never out of stock in my high school's vending machine.
5:53 Cool! It lets you look inside right to the...RF shielding. woohoo
That looks awsome
Loved it.
... and don't forget the SNL parody to Pepsi, Crystal Clear Gravy! ;)
Not to forget, there are still consumer products made for jails. At least in the US.
I wish I still had my transparent Swatch and Gameboy.
I love seeing our retro machines in the clear cases, especially in the case (pun intended) where the original case is damaged, like my Amiga 500 that has become brittle with age. I also think the classic Macs look great in them. I may have to get some clear cases myself one of the days. And again, congrats on Babyfractic!!!! :)
The best couple in Social Media : ). Best Wishes for soon Family.Amen.
Congrats to Mommyfractic and Daddyfractic!
Congratulations for the new baby. I love your videos. Your house is my dreams house, btw.
That Macintosh Classic brings back memories of Missile Command, ShufflePuck CafĂŠ and Brickles. In Brickles if you managed to get the ball between the top areas where the ball would automatically remove the most bricks it would reboot the computer đ
You missed the new transparent wireless earphones just released by beats.
Personally, I love the "Atomic purple" translucent Game Boy Color [sic]. I bought a broken one off eBay a while back, and used a donor with a broken screen to repair it (after cleaning the battery sludge from inside the case!). Unfortunately the back shell was damaged, so I also had to buy a third-party replacement. It's not as good quality as the original, but I kept the original front so it still looks good.
You missed out the best thing a transparent toaster , so you knew when your toast was done đ
There have been transparent Am/FM radios with a headphone jack but no speaker. Theyâre designed for prisoners. Canât sneak anything inside them or bother other prisoners with a speaker.
I always thought this was a bad idea. If dirt gets inside the unit, it is visible but not easily cleanable. Also, scratches are more obvious on clear plastic than on opaque plastic.
atomic purple will always be the greatest color .
