- How to contour like a pro
This week we are talking about contouring. The reason I wanted to address this makeup technique is that I've seen so many "trends" recently that show people putting on their contour first and then their foundation which ends up with a dark brown shapeless mess!! DO NOT do this.
I'll show you how to contour correctly as a pro makeup artist and introduce you to a really lovely new product from Beauty Pie that results in a natural looking contour which will shape your face.

Definitely prefer your lighting at home as it seems more real to me.
Totally agree 👌much more authentic and helpful
Thank you your feedback is appreciated 😊
Love your set up at home. Isn't that how we all do makeup, with the light changing, the door going and kids running around. Way more true to life 💜
Yes you are so right sometimes I feel maybe I need to make it look more professional but you have no convinced me otherwise 😊
Keep your lighting as is as it's what I work with at home and I imagine lots of people will be the same. Excellent tutorial thank you x
Home setup is perfect, please don't change to studio. Apart from the personal touch and natural light, it is also nice to hear your family or doorbell or delivery guy in the background. Feels normal like any other home where makeup and beauty is happening in between life.
Your gorgeous green shirt and that stunning lipstick really made you look as if you didn’t have a nasty cold. Master of disguise Caroline ❤
I agree with you. I always feel like people are trying to reinvent the “makeup wheel” but they use all these filters/lights and of course it looks good on screen, but in reality not so much, you see the makeup before you even see the face.
Lipstick shade just so gorgeous. Especially with that pea green blouse. Looks so fresh and beautiful 😻
I like the realness of the home light. Thanks for showing contouring Caroline, looks lovely. 🥰
100% prefer honest real light. That pink is poppin’ against your gorgeous green top! 😍 Altogether lovely 💗
We like honest, real light. I just like watching anything that you do. Have a fantastic week.
I like you at home. I also like your approach. I’m nearly 64 and have the need to contour cheeks and under the jaw. I tried that “all at once” technique and it was a big fail (and I’m pretty good with makeup, if I’m allowed to say that). This gave me a few new pointers, and I’m grateful.
So pleased Carolyn just use soft cream textures even a slightly darker foundation will work too 👍🏻
I really appreciate this video! I’ve tried to understand contouring for a while now, and I think this is the first time it’s made sense to me. I’m also 52, and concerned about makeup making me look older (even though I LOVE makeup). I really am thankful for your take.
Thank you so much Meredith 😊
I feel the same. Ive realised ive been doing it wrong!! Will try this way and see how i go.
Lovely as usual caroline x
Ooh yes that contour looks great…and as a chubbier faced woman I shall definitely try the chin thing! Like the natural lighting Caroline. Wish for future ep…drrrry undereyes…look moist and concealed 7am, 1030, like a cracked desert!
Thank you so much, this was just what I needed! Being 46 and very pale I really struggle with contour and bronzer placement........I now feel more confident to give it a try.
Even try with a slightly darker foundation 🤞🏻
I've never been a fan of underpainting. It seems too much for the everyday makeup wearer. Sidenote - seeing such a fresh face lifted my mood by levels! such a pretty look.
☺️❤️☺️
Beautiful, definitely prefer the at home natural lighting xx
Your lighting is fine as it is for me. Thank you for showing us how to contour properly. Its great to learn from a professional. 😅
🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
Love Beauty Pie products. Please carry on showing us your tutorials from home. It's far more realistic, as I'm sure most of us put our make up on in natural light at home. ❤
Most definitely natural lighting....after all, we all walk outside into the real world with our makeup applied, so best to know how it's going to look in advance 😉 Great tutorial as always. I've had some kind of persistent cold/cough since Boxing day, so to cheer me up one of the days I watched the video of when your lovely son Stan did your makeup. Such a "feelgood" tutorial.....always makes me smile!
I just LOVE the fact that you use natural lighting for your filming. It really helps in being able to see the colours as true - plus it's much more personal and engaging to watch!
Great channel, thank you so much x
Such a pretty look. I much prefer home lighting as it's what we use to apply makeup and is more real. x
Definitely your type of lighting Caroline, hope your son is doing well and you are too 😘
Oooh lovely. Defo stay at home, that’s what makes your video’s so relatable x
Caroline, I'm happy to watch you in any light. xx😀
Great tips. I like the light in your room as it comes in and out, as then we get to see the details of the look in different light.
Fabulous tutorial on contouring - thank you. Never contoured before but may give it a go now, especially as I’m a Beauty Pie member. Love that you do these in your home as shows “real” lighting.
Totally concur with the previous commentator! The more natural lighting is better as I think it probably shows the look in 'real life'.. Your expert advice is always much appreciated, I wouldn't even attempt to contour and only recently have been brave enough to try bronzer. But might give this a go, with the help of your tips. Thanks,😄😄 Caroline for another great video..
So pleased that you feel this way..
Oh! Just love colour. Natural light and lovely natural you. Thanks great video 😊
Love that look today so lifting! Loved the contour info very helpful. I think the changing light levels bother you more than us! I’m too busy watching what you’re doing. Hope you feel better soon. Great to have the Saturday videos to look forward to again.
Natural light! Thank you for this video! I've always been afraid of contouring but I will try your method for sure! 🤗
Hello Caroline! Thank you so much for this marvellous lesson! I prefer real light .... real as you!!!! Have a lovely week!!!
Feel better! Definitely natural light
Brilliant, Caroline, thank you! I would never put contouring on first, lol. I love your natural light and everything about how/ where you film. Pink lip color is beautiful on you. I see how helpful lipliner can be, must use more. Thank you again, XO.
Morning Caroline….😊😊that lipstick with the green….fabulous…great video…thanks so much
Honest real light is the best. ❤
Your natural lighting is best.
Home lighting for sure. It's more real life. Thanks for the tutorial. I'm a Beautypie member but never sure about the contour thing being in my 50's. You make it look do-able. Might give it a try 👍
Caroline, I always prefer you! I love the natural light. This was a fantastic video. Thank you 💚
Great tips for contouring tnx! Watching from new Zealand 🇳🇿 😍 love your current setup, studios are so sterile please don't change a thing. Enjoy your wit and content!
So informative. Something I’ve never tried on my ageing face but now can’t wait to try. Thank you.
Yes!!!!
Thanks Caroline for makeing this video even though you're feeling poorly! I hope you feel better soon - in any case you still look fabulous :)
I love the pink lips with your green look, so fresh :D
Colour gives us all a lift 💃🏼
I actually like the real light! Emma x
Lovely... real ligth, real Makeup, real life... 🙌🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Love your videos! This one has been very helpful, thank you!
I hope you feel better soon. Thank you for your sterling efforts when under the weather!!!! I am struggling with the very situation you touched upon, aging face and makeup can make things worse! So difficult……
Absolutely loved this video! Thanks Caroline! Personally I really like the real light. Also love this idea of you debunking current internet trends that are misleading. I’m sure there are dozens of them that annoy you! Ha. This was so so helpful. What would help me to understand is your technique and thought about color and light theory. I get the basics of contouring below the bone to accent the shape but in terms of bronzing vs contouring and placement of both (can you even do both or is that a mistake?) and then when to incorporate blush and highlight would be great. I feel like I mostly understand it (75-80-%) but not fully. Thanks again and just love love that pink lipstick on you!
Oh OK a deep dive I will indeed 👍🏻👍🏻
Gorgeous - What lurgy?! I much prefer you filming in natural light. I can see your skin and what’s actually happening and , most importantly, what the makeup really looks like.
Thank you Caroline for explaining why not to contour before foundation if you have a 'fuller' face. I recently watched a British CZcamsr contour 1st and thought that's how it should be done. After she applied foundation on the other parts of her face she looked like a tiger. Anyway it came together once she buffed.
Yep… be selective on who you follow 😊
I like the lighting you have at home
Love the look nice & easy look see you next week take care ❤
Super helpful, Caroline, thanks! I’ve never contoured before but I think my round face could benefit so I’m going to give it a go. Love the natural, real lighting of your room at home; suits the style of these lovely chats we have!
Let me know how you get on ❤️
This video was perfect timing for me as I do struggle with contouring. Thanks so much for your tips and advice which I will put into practice.
I don't have any problems with your lighting, like people say it keeps it real. 😊
😊😊😊
Hi Caroline, best to stay where you are doing what you do so well. Thank you for your brilliant videos. ❤
Great video. I like your honest real lights since that is what most of us have around us. The BP contour is on it's way to my home. I can't way to try your techniques. Thank you.
Fantastic professional tips! Yes, please! Thank you❤
Super appreciate your videos. Also please don’t get a studio. You are just so real and having you at home in normal lighting lends that reality to us.
Super Caroline love colours lipstick with green gorge makeup love the realness why not! Everyone is doing their makeup in movey light anyway
Hope you feel better quick quick x
Good shoulds, that’s my motto!
Caroline this was so helpful and makes me consider my products as I age ❤
Great video and like the natural ‘real’ light! 😊👍🏻💡
Great contour instruction Caroline! Love once again the lip color on you.☕💄
Unlocked is my fave mascara ever! It used to be that I needed one for the top lashes for volume and length and a waterproof one for the bottom. However, Unlocked does it all… and lasts for ages, too! Great tutorial, Caroline, completely agree with everything you say. In defence of the makeup artist who started the “foundation over contour “ trend, he was working with pop stars who needed to be seen from the back seats in stadium gigs. … Love the pink lippy as well, so 80s❤ Have a great weekend, Caroline! Lots of love xxx PS Real light is better because that’s what most of us are working with at home 😊
Thanks Kate I’m pleased you like the lighting as I value your opinion from a professional view. I sometimes feel like I should light my films to give them a professional edge but everyone seems to be happy how it is, so happy days 😊
Poor Caroline! I hope you feel better soon, these viruses are a pain, just as you think it's gone it comes back for another visit😩take care and try to rest as much as possible (easier said than done I know !)xx the video was soo interesting btw honest lighting EVERY TIME 👍👍
Perfect as it is x
Thank you Caroline 💜 I like natural lighting 😊
Love this easy look. I was doing it wrong. Thank you.
Stunning look. So, so beautiful. 🤩
Love this video. Thank you. This look is beautiful on you.
I shall definitely try this as I have such a moon face! Thanks Caroline xx
Fantastically informative video Caroline- thank you! Also, love that you film at home - keeping it real is 😍👍👌 xxx
Okeedokee 😊
Another brilliant tutorial!
Caroline love these videos just exactly how they are 💞 thank you x
Hi Caroline you look fabulous and the lighting is fine. Could you please do eye makeup for someone over 60.
Honest real light.
Great tutorial, I learned so much. I have a round face and powder contour gets away from me so easily, will try this. I enjoy your real life lighting. Thank you!😊
Loved this brilliant contour tutorial. Your explanation and application were really clear to follow. Maybe you can try the studio lights one day and then see if your viewers prefer it or not...nevertheless I will always watch your videos with witch ever lighting 😉
Hi Caroline I like the lighting just the way you have it!! Love the lippie colour and, the contouring looks beautiful 😍 xx
Best information on contouring 🎉 ....... love your videos from home seems so much more personal ❤
Lovely look Caroline 💕 Love the natural light, to me it seems more authentic and helpful than box/studio light. 💝
Oh wow!!!! Just a great lesson on contouring. I’m a huge Beauty Pie fan and just bought the contour. Now I feel I can use it the right way!!!!! 😊♥️
Natural lighting at home as that's what most of us have x
Love this tutorial. Fantastic tips with contouring.. Love the natural lighting, true to life.. Thank you..
The best video that I have ever seen about conturing.I love your natural style and it is obviouse that You are a pro!
I agree with so many others, lighting as it wold be at home ! I love this contouring explanation, however…..I have a round face, with “ jowls” and a double chin. It doesn’t matter what I do I cannot disguise it just emphasises! Also have to be very careful with blusher placement, nothing on the apple or near the front of my face , just high and nothing further than the outer corners of my eyes. ( Wayne Goss trick). How I wish I had cheekbones 😢
HONEST and REAL!!!! Thats the best light. Love the video, hope you were able to get the facial oil off your collar!! XOX
Loved this video thank you so much. I’m a big BP fan and I have the contour but it seemed too scary and I couldn’t work out how to do it well. You’ve definitely helped me loads. I’m off to order the illuminating wand now! And I love your home lighting because it just makes everything seem much more natural and like everyone can have a go x
Woohoo!!
Brilliant ❤
Great contouring tutorial! I should contour more having a chubby round face. Definitely that chub under my chin.
I prefer honest real light.
Ohh the Flamingo lip & the vibrant green 💋💚
Honest real light please 😊loving the pink lipstick and fresh looking contour thank you for the tips Caroline 🌸
You look so fresh and glowy with this look Caroline! Bright lips always look good on you. I loved this tutorial, thank you so much! I am really bad at contouring but your explanations are so good that I am going to try it tomorrow morning. I really love your easy makeup looks, you always look so put together and cute. I love how you always pair your makeup with your clothes too, making the pink and green look so modern.
Ah cheers Laura I appreciate your compliments 😊
Really enjoyed your tutorial today. You always make things look so easy to achieve, not always the outcome when I give it a go 😂. I found it so relaxing watching you apply your makeup, you’re so gentle that it sort of calms me down. 👍x
Thank you for this tutorial Caroline.
I absolutely love Tropic Skincare makeup and really recommend you explore it further.
I haven't tried the skincare yet as I still have my The Ordinary products to use up.
Lovely! 😘
Brilliant video, thank you for your explanation on contouring. I prefer your videos at home - more realistic 💚
beautiful caroline
Like your sponsenality to life , always bubbly
Hi Caroline 😊 great tutorial! Thank you 🙌🏻 my fave high end mascara is Lancôme hypnose (haven’t tried the hourglass ones) and my fave in drugstore is elf big mood ( both in brown) as i have quite fair lashes in places and feel the brown looks less harsh on me xxx
Yes I might pick that one up today haven’t used it for years 😊
Paused at all the "should, should, should". The other day someone said that when you say that you "should" do something, then it sucks all the joy out of getting the thing done. If you change the wording to "want" i.e. instead of saying "I should wash my hair today", say "I want to wash my hair today", then when you do it you got what you wanted and it brings the joy back. I thought it was interesting.
This is a great instructional vid! Thank you! 😅 Sounds silly but never realised doing a contour was a) a curve b) started thinner, got thicker!
I just love your home. I can’t imagine a studio lighting but if I would lose details that would be a shame. Thank you for your help with contouring. Would you change anything on a woman who has jowls? Thank you!
Please have a look into Tropic, I'd be very interested in your opinion on their products. I have a few that I'm impressed with at the moment x
Just Real thank you ❤x
