    That was commanded by Major Percival. They made him general and he went on to surrender Singapore to the Japanese.
    He thought the Japs couldnt attack by land through the jungle (afaik).
    He shouldve learnt from Crossbarry not to underestimate what determination can do.

    • @Zappy9518
      @Zappy9518 Před 2 měsíci +3

      There was a decorated WW1 vet that was sent over there by MOD to assess the situation in mid to late 1930s. He identified the weak spot that the Japanese could land further up the peninsula, and by trekking, cycling through the jungle could attack Singapore from the North, he was either working class or middle class and the officers, members of the aristocracy, mocked and ignored him. How dare this commoner have the audacity to expect his betters to consider his advice. They had their big new guns facing out to sea. There was no need to listen to this blabbering. He wrote up his report, identified the weak points in Singapores' defence, left for Blighty angry and frustrated. The Japanese must have read his report cause that's how they took Singapore. The elite officers were well treated. We all know the horrors that awaited the rank and file. Well done, percivel.

      Jesus,
      I didnt know that.
      Robert Fisk in his talk on his book The Great War for Civilisation ;War geopolitics and the Middle East (the media journalism and why we get it wrong) said
      'Superpowers have this boundless optimism that they can do anything despite what history tried to teach them'
      (boundless need to project power, and refuse to believe what the MoD officer said)
      The book is mainly WW1, Sykes Picot and how its still creating wars up to 2003 Iraq in almost mirror image complete with trench warfare, human waves, nerve gas, mustard gas and biological warfare
      "After the Great war in 1919, the British and French redrew the borders of Ireland , Balkans and the entire Middle East. And I have spent my entire 45 year professional career watching the people on those borders burn".
      He had a poster from Baghdad from 1919 (Irak) bought from Pvt Charles Dickens daughter, that said "People of Irak. We come not as conquerors but as Liberators to free you from centuries of tyranny" (Major General Maud)
      Blair, Bush and every other Western leader used the exact same lines before massacring the place. Im not sure if they knew Mauds declaration but they were destined to repeat it
      Id suggest watch it (unless you already have) because there are no more genuine war correspondents.

The IRA by the time of the 11th July 1921 Truce were first rate light infantry. The IRA used tactics that anyone with basic military doctrine training would recognise.(A) They would travel to and from POC(Points of Contact) with the enemy on foot. (B) Establish skillfull KZ's(Kill Zones) and ambushes (C) Engage more experienced enemy forces in CQB(Close Quarter Battle) (D) After successful operations that inflicted casualties and captured weapons would conduct proper E&E (Escape and Rvade) procedure.

      @@niallcnoc9646 The IRA's military modus operandi was guerilla warfare. The Irish War of Independence in military terms was an insurgency which was gathering momentum by the summer of 1921. The last 3 months of the conflict was the worst for the Crown Forces in terms of casualties. At its height the IRA could only put into the field 2,500-3,000 men. The Crown Force presence in Ireland at its height was estimated at 75,000-80,000. The IRA in essence were an army of riflemen with a couple of machine guns and the IED using modern military parlance would be the heaviest weapon in its arsenal..
