1991 and it was the law that kept schools segregated. It would be a another year until I went to school with Indians and Blacks, but Korean, Japanese and Taiwanese kids had been at "white" schools since at least 1989.

Hadn't they been always considered as "honorary whites"?

@@carlosmpsenyorcapitacollon6977 only by Botha and the NP. Historically Smuts and the South African Party had 'orientals' on the list of prohibited immigrants. WW2 did not help matters much. But because of sanctions in the 1980s, strategic alliances were made with Taiwan and Israel. Other counties like Japan and South Korea did not care about doing business with South Africa at that time. All four nations' citizens were given preferential treatment, despite what the prevailing apartheid racial philosophy might lead one to believe.

@@MarkRyanSchulz My father was born in Egypt and was considered "Asian" because he was Armenian. Obviously the fact that he was also Maltese did not register. He wanted to join his cousins who emigrated ( and them and their kids stayed on after Apartheid fell) in 1947. He was rejected. He then moved to Canada in 1964, met my mother and had me. He kept in touch with his cousins until his death earlier this year. I often see my relatives in Europe but have not been to ZA yet.

@@Laughandsong The NP had 'desirable' and 'undesirable' Asians for immigration. Asians from Communist and Islamic nations were not welcome. The Israelis, Japanese, South Koreans and Taiwanese were welcomed because those governments did not follow the international sanctions regime, and the NP had always had a weird respect for the Japanese people going back to the beginning of the last century.
