    Incredible rendition of a soldier's favourite. I don't often go to church, but did last Sunday & this was the opening hymn of the mass. Find it hard not to get a lump in the throat at the best of times, but, the night before, I had read a stack of letters, sent home during WWII, from my uncles. Three of my uncles died. The letters had me weeping. Even in 1942, one of them wrote "This should be the last Christmas away". He died in 1943. All three died in 1943. Could hardly sing it. RIP & thanks.

    Regardless of our brand of Christianity, there lies a bond together. Listen together and feel the sincerity.

    Credit to Neil for showing due reverence for the song itself and the expression of the cry to God. Very moving.

    The Divine was given a voice by Neil in this. I have listened to it several times and it is just about one of the most moving and powerful performamces of any song I have ever heard in my life. Thank you so much for posting it.

    What a performance! As a piano-vocalist, I can attest to the calibre. And such a beautiful song about the love of God.

    I was so delighted to find this gem here. I remember watching it live, and being blown away by it. It's my favourite hymn, and it is exceptionally difficult to sing - never mind while you're playing piano, and doing it live in front of a tv and studio audience!

    I was privileged to hear Hannon sing this live in the Royal Festival Hall ahead of a performance of To Our Fathers in Distress (czcams.com/video/e_Vq2eybh4Q/video.html).
    Simply pure and lovely. It led me to choose the hymn for the recessional for own father's funeral not long after.

    I could hardly get through this video as the words and beautiful tune are too powerful. I remember my choir days when I couldn't get through verse 3 or beyond as I was always choked with emotion. The words are as poetry.

    I cant begin to tell you how much this comment means to me this afternoon. I love this song and I just listened to this video then decided to read a few of the comments as I wanted to mention how much I liked it. And then I read your comment. And then I understood why I have discovered this hymn, and how God has spoken to me within this beautiful hymn, and how He spoke to me through your words today. This means so much to me.

    "You'll never hear this anywhere else because no one is dumb enough to do it." Isn't that what he said? If he meant to be humorous he failed miserably. I was a little shocked, It came across sounding as though he was apologizing for being there and really didn't want to sing at all.

      @toperic02 Před 5 lety +6

      Well, you are obviously wrong! Anyone who knows about Neil Hannon, knows he would never be so crass; he's an exceptionally respectful, genuine man. And he's an atheist (or agnostic0 so even more respect due.

    • @ieuancilgwri3230

      It takes courage to step out of your comfort zone especially in such a public way. And even if you are an atheistic listener, you may still appreciate the nobility of the words set to a great tune, which I suspect he does.

      Given the times we live in, beset as we are on all sides by smug dismissive, bigots who eschew the divine and the beautiful, it’s hardly surprising he felt obliged to make a wee deprecatory remark before performing what is evidently a heartfelt rendition of this song. No doubt, somewhere, some purse-lipped pharisaic nonentity will be waiting to be offended by this.
