River was an amazing actor. I wish someone had been able to help him. After I saw My Own Private Idaho, I really saw what a strong actor he was. He was in films that probably didn't help him much and though he was great, he looked like a depression case. So very sad.

Jesus, does anyone" i wonder if this really hits with Will because he was 13/14 when he did stand by me with River.
He was a kid just like River. He didn't want to get caught up with the drugs. What's wrong with that? You've got someone who needs adult intervention, not the help of a peer who could just as easily fall into the trap of the drugs. Come on. In the end actually a person themselves has to want to get help. Nobody can REALLY make someone change.

Nobody seemed to protect Bobby Driscoll either. A very very sad story and life. River Phoenix and Bobby Driscoll both sadly died to young.
