She’s criminally underrated as a singer. Part of the reason is her lack of confidence in her vocal ability. According to many, she just liked to go out there and let it rip. She was more interested in the whole performance. She felt she was adequate enough. This, and other performances, proved she had far more vocal ability than she gave herself credit for. I love her voice. No one can imitate her. No one can cover her songs and make you feel them like she can. When she is vocally on, I think her voice is among the most pleasant in the industry. There are many singers others consider technically better than Madonna who could never ever come close to the vocal performance she gave here.

I think it's a matter of being objective, considering her a "singer" in the meaning of the term, it's a bit much... I've been listening to her since 1982... when with a slightly nasal, slightly shouty voice, she came out with "Everybody" , does he not have a certain mastery or vocal means of his "colleagues" W. Houston..? same period to name one. In my opinion she was a skilled marketer of herself, with constant changes in her look, taking rhythms and styles that were not her own (vogueing, an expression of black culture and ballrooms, reserved for the gay scene) and making her own use of them. ..An entrepreneur in herself, which she continues to do...perhaps, for some, going beyond good taste, with the perennial escape from the passing of the years, and the search for perennial youth. Although, and I quote some passages written about her life... "Madonna's ambition was to become a dancer. The choice to start was influenced by Christopher Flynn, her ballet teacher at the University of Michigan, for a few years before to abandon everything and go to New York.In 1970 Madonna goes to NY with $35 in her pocket, nowhere to live, lounging on her host's sofa...She manages to take dance lessons from the super étoile, Martha Graham, ( considered the greatest American dancer of the 20th century, as well as the "mother" of American modern dance) with the idea of becoming a true artist. However, New York was not what Madonna expected and she had traumatizing experiences. , she then began to sing and someone noticed her, Camille Barbone, music producer who eventually became her manager, giving her credit, hosting her, as she lived in a hovel in a dangerous area of the city and providing the instruments...in 1982 Madonna recorded her first single ...the rest is history".... Which by continuing at its own pace... will perhaps be "eternal"...

Yes, she was definitely nervous. There are a couple of moments at the beginning when you can see her hands shake and her look nervously into the camera. The fact that she absolutely nails this performance being nervous is a testament to how good she is as a performer.
A few things about this performance… her date was Michael Jackson who was sitting in the front row, and who she blows a kiss to at the end. The press lost their minds at the King and Queen of Pop together at the Oscars. She was nervous for several reasons. Of course, she wanted to be accepted in Hollywood and hoped this performance of an Oscar nominated song (it later won that night) would help her be accepted by the Hollywood elite and studio bosses. There were also some tech issues which must have thrown her off as well. Apparently there was an issue with the microphone stand or the mic itself and just before she was lifted up stage, someone told her there was no microphone there, or that the microphone stand couldn’t be lifted onto the stage. So Madonna thought she’d be on the stage live in front of millions and she’d have no working mic. Luckily that didn’t happen… I guess at the last moment they solved the issue but that must have rattled her. At the very end of her singing, because she’s taking her fur stole on and off repeatedly in the performance, it loosened one of her very expensive earrings and in a close up you can see it just hanging in her hair. She actually takes the earring and throws it into the orchestra pit so that it doesn’t get lost or come off completely as she continues the performance strutting off stage. I wonder if the earring was ever located… I assume someone collected it for her because she wore real diamonds on loan and it must have cost a small fortune.

She was wearing over 20 MILLION dollars worth of Harry Winston Diamonds that night in her jewelry, and it was all on loan from the Winston archive and they all had near heart-attacks when they saw her toss the earring into the orchestra pic. Later they were all more relived than they’d ever been before when she revealed to them she had worn crystal replicas of the jewelry during her performance and switched back after she was done because she suspected an issue would arise.

I've always loved this performance, and this was early nineties when she wasn't even aware of her entire range and wasn't necessarily able to utilize every part of it (she learned a lot about her range and singing technique in general when training for Evita later in the 90s). I think this performance is much better than You Must Love Me (as beautiful as that was) which was after she had had her lessons already. There's something more authentic in this. Her hand shook because of nerves, she admitted it later. It was her first live Oscar performance and it was the biggest live television audience she had ever performed for, and we all know how she is a perfectionist. But I don't mind the couple tiny "mistakes," her authenticity in this performance overrides them, and there's a kind of freedom in this that I really enjoyed. The entire I'm Breathless album that was inspired by the film Dick Tracy is excellent, although very underrated in her back catalogue. On that album she really tapped into a different type of musical genre and showed she can sing more than just pop music which she is very known for. I think people should listen to that album because it really showcases her vocal ability. She very much stepped into character (Breathless Mahoney) and interpreted every song on the album and did a brilliant job with it.

Truly the performance of her life, Madonna is Evita!! That song is from the scene where she's rapidly dying and her body is preparing for death, and all she wants is validation of her husband's love before she leaves this earth, hence "You must love me." So much genuine emotion from Maddy, I got goosebumps in those few minutes of song, she deserves some much more credit than she actually gets. Arguably not the best technical singer, but definitely a songstress who emotes and connects with her audience, and that's why we love and adore and admire her for never giving up. Bravo!! She said in an interview with Kurt Loder that she was very nervous. And also said when she was coming up from the stage a tech guy was yelling that the mic stand wasn’t rising as planned. So she was nervous. Her back was to us on intro cause the mic stand was too short , she was making it longer. She was incredible here.

I've heard jazz singers killing this song. But hey, her voice is so recognizable, so unique. Not the best trained singer, but she's shown here that she can give a more than good performance. Also being the actress she is at heart, you just can't help but watch this in awe. Sondheim wrote this brilliant song. He was a genius. This whole album is a masterpiece to me.

Georgiana, thank you for reacting to this video. The hand shaking you saw at the start was due to a mic issue at the start of the performance. As Madonna was ascending they informed her that the mic wasn’t going up. Thankfully they corrected that issue quickly and when she turns around the mic was there. Imagine turning around the no mic. Yes a stage crew would’ve probably ran and handed her a mic but still.
Your critique was nicely balanced and glad to see you smiling and enjoying the performance.
I’m from Texas so we know heatwaves very well. Many peeps without a/c stud frequent cool showers throughout the day to cool off. Five that a try & stay cool. 😎
