“Learn all there is to learn, and then choose your own path.” ~ Handel
George Frederic Handel was a German-English composer of the Baroque period, renowned for his operas, oratorios, and his instrumental works. The Minuet in g minor, HWV 434/4 is one movement in a larger set Handel titled Suite of Pieces for the Keyboard. Published in 1733, this compilation of short pieces consisted of two volumes, and was most likely written for the harpsichord. Wilhelm Kempff, a German pianist and composer central to the canonization of the common practice period repertoire, arranged this version of Handel’s Minuet in g minor, exemplifying its serene and lyrical characteristics. I think this piece of Handel represents what Ludwig van Beethoven said about his works: “Go to him to learn how to achieve great effects, by such simple means.”
