    CORALINE
    Tell me your truths
Coraline, Coraline, tell me your truths
Coraline, Coraline, tell me your truths
Coraline, Coraline, tell me your truths
    Coraline, Coraline
Coraline, as beautiful as the sun
A warrior with a zealous heart
    Hair like red roses
Those copper wires are precious, my love, take them to me
If you'll hear the bells singing
    You'll see Coraline weeping
She takes the sorrow of others
And she carries it inside of her
Coraline, Coraline, tell me your truths
Coraline, Coraline, tell me your truths
Coraline, Coraline, tell me your truths
    Coraline, Coraline
    But she knows the truth
Going on is not for everyone
With the heart split in two halves
    It's cold already
She's a child but she feels
Some kind of weight and sooner or later she'll break
People will say. "She is not worth anything"
She can't even go out of a simple door
But one day, one time, she will make it
And I told Coraline that she can grow up
To grab her stuff and then leave
But she feels a monster keeping her in a cage
    Covering her path of mines
And I told Coraline that she can grow up
To grab her stuff and then leave
But Coraline doesn't want to eat, no
Yes, Coraline would like to disappear
    And Coraline weeps
    Coraline is anxious
Coraline wants the sea but she is afraid of water
And perhaps the sea is inside of her
And each word is an axe
    A cut on her back
    Like a raft that sails
    In a swollen river
And perhaps the river is inside of her, of her
    I'll be fire and cold
    A shelter during winter
    I'll be what you breathe
I'll understand what's inside of you
And I'll be water to drink
    The meaning of good
    I'll also be a soldier
    Or light at night
And I ask nothing in return
    Just a smile
Each of your smallest tears is an ocean on my face
And I ask nothing in return
    Just some time
    I'll be a banner, a shield
Or your sword of silver and
    And Coraline weeps
    Coraline is anxious
    Coraline wants the sea
But she is afraid of water
And perhaps the sea is inside of her
And each word is an axe
    A cut on her back
    Like a raft that sails
    In a swollen river
And perhaps the river is inside of her, of her
    And tell me your truths
Coraline, Coraline, tell me your truths
Coraline, Coraline, tell me your truths
Coraline, Coraline, tell me your truths
    Coraline, Coraline
Coraline, as beautiful as the sun
She lost the fruit of her womb
    She never knew love
But a father who is nothing like a father
They have told her that in the city there's a castle
    With walls so strong
That if you go and live in there
Nothing will be able to hit you
Nothing will be able to hit you

Is a true story, Coraline (not her real name) was abused by her father and is full of pain and anxiety, is a tragic story because despite the "prince" is trying to save her, it didn't work and the castle in the end is probably a cemetery (she committed suicide).
The door she can't open is a classic sign of depression, when you can't even force yourself to get out your bedroom.
The monster that keeps her in cage can be her father or her own anxiety.

@@JimGames let's clarify a point here: the true story was not revealed and is not going to be disclosed. All the answers you get from fans are just interpretations from the lyrics. Damiano (the vocalist, and lyricist) said in an interview (I quote from memory), "Coraline is just a name I chose because it fit the music and rhythm. It's a story I lived as a spectator and I'm not going to talk about. I made it into a metaphor as much as possible, it's a fairy-tale about a knight who wants to save a princess but it ends badly, because real life doesn't work like that". The actual person might have had psychological issues and/or be the victim of abuse, and quite certainly of neglect by her father who's mentioned here, but the rest is up to imagination and, quite frankly, nobody's business.
In my opinion the value of the song is what everyone of us can relate to, and empathize with: the pains (sometimes unbearable) of growing up; the boulders life sometimes throws at us; the trauma of wanting to be there for someone we care about, and being helpless to do it; the staggering blow of defeat; and the fact that people always have an opinion, which actually means judgment, and much of the time their easy spite is the crushing weight on top of everything else.
Yeah, not a happy song. But you've managed to pick two ballads, and neither on the upbeat side of their very wide range. They've also made several songs in English, beside a few remarkable covers (their Beggin' is climbing all charts). You might check out their I Wanna Be Your Slave, or New Song, or For Your Love.
Or, if you'd like to dig more into this kind of Italian exploration (great job, by the way!), there's lots of fansubs out there. You might have a look at La Paura del Buio (there's a live version with both Italian lyrics and ENG subtitles, if you search their concert for Radio Italia Live here on YT), or Amandoti (Loving You), which is also a cover... Or their Eurovision winning song, Zitti e Buoni. You'll find lots of translations of that one, for sure.

There isn't one true answer. Only our own thoughs and feelings, not the "true story". So it is misleading say this song is about something spesific, when we really don't know. It is the beauty of this song, we all can relate from different backgrounds.

Spot on analysis, Damiano describes Coraline as a true story that has been turned into a fairytale which has an unhappy ending. Damiano has also said the real story is about someone he knew but that the name Coraline is not real and is only used for phonetics and musicality. Parts of the story may be real or they may be embellished for dramatic effect, only Damiano and presumably the rest of the band know the real story behind Coraline but he has said he will keep it to himself at the moment. The song Coraline is open to interpretation, it can mean whatever the listener wants, it doesn't have to be a literal abuse, it could be psychological torment, To me, the lyrics suggest the girl in the fairytale suffered abuse at the hands of her father, lost her baby and then tragically commits suicide but that is not necessarily anything close to the true story that inspired Coraline. To me Coraline is important because it describes the helpless, sick feeling of wanting to be someone's saviour, wanting to offer them everything but realising that they have to do it for themselves. With the best will in the world you can't save someone who doesn't think they are worth saving.

In a way you already did, cause this song, as well as the entire album Teatro d’Ira, was recorded live. A fully played, raw and written only by the band members. All four of them are really incredible artists at their young age (from 20 to 22), and this is already their second album.

Thanks for this superb analysis. You are hearing one of the most interesting new bands this year, and possible also the next years. They might become one of the superstars of rock, if they continue.
The Band is just living the dream everyone has, who begins seriously with music.
They were formed by Victoria de Angelis (bass) and Thomas Raggi (Guitar) 6 years ago in Rome,Italy. Thomas was 14 years old, Victoria 15. They want to take music serious, with the mood: "even if you are ill, you have to attend to our practice hours". They didn´t take Damiano David (Vocals, 16) at first try, because they don´t believe he will follow this rule. As i know they were all on the same school. Then they searched a dummer and found Ethan Torchio (15) in a facebook group for musicians around rome, who are searching a band. They start practicing together and begin writing songs.
Main writer Daminano, music done by all members. Take into account that they love different music styles - thier songs are ranging from rocky types of funk (New Song), reggae (Lasciami stare), rap (Immortale) and all types of rock from soft to metal. In my opinion every piece is well played and almost every song is good and interesting. There is no really a bad song.
After forming and writing a song, they play covers at the main pedestian zone of Rome, earning money for their first record and won a battle of the bands for roman pupil bands. (Rome is a very big city with more than 2.6 mill inhabitants)
After that, they audited to x-factor italy in 2017 with thier first original song "Choosen" (Watch thier video). They finished only 2nd but the reaction of the audience was fantastic. They got a recording contract from Sony Music Italy. Thier first cd "Choosen" consists of 2 own songs and the covers of x-factor in original length. (The live videos from x-factor are fantastic performances, but they formated to 90s, 2min or 2:30 min as common in such shows.) The now charting "Beggin" comes from this cd. It a cover of the Madcon version of the "Four season" piece from the 1960ies. ! Madcon add some verses !
Than they made their 2nd disk "Il ballo della vita" meaning "dance of live". Italy is one of the major music markets of the world, to have success you have to sing in italian (rock music was never a really big thing in italy) and you have to do any sort of soft ballads. The recording performed exorbitant in Italy with 3 weeks on no.1 in charts and 5 tracks reaching top 10 (3 on place #1). For thier current disk "Theatro d´ira", meaning "Theatre of Wrath", they want to a more rock type album. (Record company doesn´t want, but the Band was backed with thier success) Remember you are 16-17, get your first record contract and that with a major label - sure you do lots of the things they want.
They opend the new cd up with "Vent´anni" - "20 years" in the end of 2020. Great song, great lyrics, good video. The disk was released in march 2021, the same time they went to the "Sanremo Festival", the most established music festival and competition in italy, which is broadcasted live by a major TV-Station. And rock bands doesn´t win it - never --> Maneskin do. Fun fact: 2nd in place was one of thier x-factor judges. (I bet, attending at "Sanremo" it was only for lauching the new album, no one at Sony expects them to win)
With winning of the Sanremo festival, you get the italian ticket to Eurovision Song Contest (ESC) the biggest music event of the world, with 180m people watching it. The ESC is a song contest, only original and new published songs are allowed. ESC is a free for every styles of music, but mostly pop music acts attend. With such a great audience its a good opportunity to lauch a song over whole Europe. Rock Band go seldomly there and almost never win --> Maneskin do on 22 May 2021 and from that moment on the bandwagon, which brings the Band to wordwide recognition, begins. I bet also nobody at Sony expects this Maneskin hurricane in social media and the charts.
    What to hear: Anything.
Explore this band, as it is one of the major additions to international rock scene this year.
You will find lots of live acts at youtube. They are even better live than on disk. Don´t listen to the Berlin Tiktok concert because sound was bad, same as for lots of the bootlegs from concerts in the last years.
The videos are visually intriguing, but hear them with lyrics on. I suggest "ven´t anni" - 20 years- to continue your Maneskin journey.
Try to get ESC winning song "Zitti e Buoni" with a VPN change, because Eurovision videos are blocked in US. Its a top notch live rock performance. (! only vocals are live, for TV production purposes everything else was prerecorded in the rehearsals)
English one: "For your love" with extensive instrumental parts and "New song" in a live version.
    Metal: "Il nome del padre"
Uups, a little more than i wanted to write ;-)

Congrats man you really got both the meaning and depth of the text as well as the power of the instrumental parts. The song is about an abusive father who (perhaps) raped his daughter (that’s where the abortion comes from), thus making her withdraw into herself, lost in depression, incapable of leaving and experiencing love. The singer tries in vain to save her, and eventually she gets behind a wall, which may be an inside prison where she doesn’t feel anything any longer because feeling for her is just feeling pain, or perhaps the wall is an asylum’s wall, or even a grave. Open for interpretation

Good reaction, just a note if i may, bear in mind when reading translated Italian lyrics to English that they don’t quite carry the same weight, you have to use your imagination a little and interpret some of the words, some of it is just not translatable in that while the words are they are interpreted differently so some meaning is lost.
It’s no doubt the case with a lot of languages but it definitely is with Italian which is quite a poetic language were the words often mean more in Italian than what their face value say they mean in English.
So in this case and for the English speaking community, don’t just read the words here, you kind of almost have to read between the lines and interpret some of what is being said rather than what is actually being said via the translation.

If you want to check out a live performance, watch their concerti in Poland a couple of days ago. They also make a significant statement pro LGBT at the end, in a country that is not exactly "liberal" from that point of view

I think one of the reasons this song is so powerful is due to the poetic freedom of the words. One thing that strikes me as particularly interesting is that when you listen a second time, things that seemed less significant first time around turn out to be the most significant, eg when he says one day she WILL make her way out of that door. My interpretation is that sadly, she only escapes her hellish life at the hands of her father in death, so when she finally leaves it is to go live in the castle with impenetrable walls ie the cemetary. This song is soul crushing.

Nice, smart and deep reaction! However you've started with two ballads, now it's time for something more energetic from Maneskin. First, check their eurovision winning song Zitti e Buoni (choose the eurovision live performance). Then definetely I wanna be your slave, New song, In nome del padre, and so on...

This song is from their last album Teatro d'ira (2020) while "Torna a casa" is around 3 years ago, they were immature from some point of view (they were from 17 to 19 years old). It's pretty evident that new album is more balanced because each member feels inside the performance (and above all the previous composition) and of course is more mature because they just grew up musically. Although some old songs are still great right now but the new album was a decisive step up. Bytheway Caroline is the most beautiful about lyrics and I love it; most of other new album tracks are, I would say, rock that works 😂
Oh, and your reaction is clever and pleasant 🤩

Damiano is the lyricist and the italian songs carry more depth than the one in english which are more commercial. Also he has such a dramatic and distinct voice that gets you in his world even without understanding the language. Check torna a casa the veve acoustic version - their most famous song - and also la paura del buio from.radio italia for something different. Their petformance of vent'ani at xfactor is also amazing.

if you analize deep the lyrics together with the music, seems is divided in chapters, first one introduces us Coraline who is she how is she, then the music changes this is chapter two, they told us how she feels and how the people see her, again music change this is the chapter 3 he tells us how was his conversation with coraline what he told her and what he understand about her and her situation, another music change chapter 4 he's not talking with us anymore, he's talking to her offering help to take her out of that situation and confort her, then turn to descrive her situation and what she's feeling, then guitar solo seems only a period of time goes by something like he loss contact with her. then chapter 5 is the end tell really quickly what happens to coraline, she lost a baby but never knows love (she was abused) and insinuate that was her father to do it, the castle he mentioned is a graveyard in Rome, she sadly dies. Is a true story but Damiano didn't told any details about the story he said only Was a true story telled as a fairy tale but with a realy sad ending

    Hi @Jim Games Live ,
Have you noticed that at the beginning you blame her for what's happening to her?
Guessing that she did something horrible, because people tell her she's worth nothing ...
It's those false conclusions that make victims unable to climb out of the pit they're in.
Most people prefer to close their eyes, because judging is easier than listening/helping.
(This is not an attack on you or your opinion btw, just something I noticed while listening to you)

The song describes in a fairytale way the real story of a girl who is abused both psychologically and sexually by her father and who, in the ending, suggests that the girl dies ... the final text of the song, the part of the castle, is a very strong metaphor .... a castle with high walls represents a place of isolation or even a prison, a mental institution .... but the part of the walls is the one that reveals the ending ....
"Le han detto in città c’è un castello
    Con mura talmente potenti
Che se ci vai a vivere dentro
    Non potrà colpirti più niente
    Non potrà colpirti più niente"
"They told you there is a castle in the city
    With such powerful walls
That if you go to live inside
    Nothing can hit you anymore
    Nothing can hit you anymore"
In prison or in an institute there is no peace.
"the castle" where you can find peace, serenity, a place of rest, a place where there is no longer suffering or pain ...
think of the walls that delimit the cemeteries here in Italy, think of the peace and silence of those places .. the powerful walls where everyone finds peace
