Harbor Freight Chief Pro Air Hammer Review

  • This is the best air hammer harbor freight has ever had... to bad it is not good as I had hoped for the expensive price. It is reasonably quiet and low vibration and has a heavy hammer but has a slow reciprocating rate so does not deliver as hard as I was wishing especially when comparing to a old Marflow rivet buster.

    I've had the chief air hammer since early March. Purchased it for $80, they are currently $130. Luckily I purchased the 2 year warranty when I bought it. I just had to exchange it the other day. I absolutely love this air hammer even though I had to warranty it. I will not hold it breaking against it, I bust up concrete very regularly with it, it definitely gets used a lot. IR's last about 2 months, this thing lasted about 9 months with extreme use and a lot stronger than the IR's. The quick connect never backed off.

      Are you referring to the Ingersoll Rand 119 MAKX? I was trying to decide between that one and the Chief.

    • @shawn7913
      @shawn7913 Před 2 lety

      @@nicolasveal5496 no, I had the 114gqc. I haven't used the 119makx. It may be better. I've broke another chief since this post, the extended warranty is really easy with harbor freight to exchange. I chip hard concrete out of my hopper on a concrete pump every couple of days, so no air hammer is going to last long. We have a pile of broken ones at the shop including a snap on. I also use the chief to knock out through shaft bearings and outlet bearings. It's definitely strong, just doesn't have longevity in my industry.

    It's a good air hammer for the money it not as good as SMAs big nasty but it don't cost anywhere near as much either.

    I have a Ingersoll and a Sunnex, the Chief is my go to. It's a beast. One thing to consider is that yours is a return although it looked unused.

    I agree with you to look at a more commercial hammer. When I bought my hammer years ago for suspension work, the tool guy told me it was all about the beats per minute that gives you the power. Also that Star Wars size blaster would be too big to fit in some of the suspension areas to free joints.

    I would like to hear more detail why Harbor Freight seems to be disappointing you. I'm just glad to finally have a competitor to Lowe's in my little town (even with there been a TSC and Wal-Mart and a few contractor supplies that center on guys who work out of town).

    I've got a sunnex long barrel and it definitely has some good power , but if you really want to turn it into a beast use a 1/4 npt high flow nipple and adapt up to a 1/2 inch hose. The extra volume makes a big difference .

    I have true rivet guns, no air hammers. They are rated in bore×stroke of the piston. They have a "teasing" throttle allowing single blows to WOT. Nice review as always, Catus. I look forward to your videos every morning! Better than the news channels.

      This. I have this Chief hammer and the trigger is basically an on-off switch. It's brutally powerful but VERY hard to control so I find myself having to turn down the air pressure to make it more controllable. A rivet gun is so much better than this Chief hammer. I'm thinking about ordering the ATS 7x so get something with power AND control.
      Supposedly the Sunex is pretty controllable and not super expensive.

      A 5X may be all you need if you buy a true rivet gun. Check out The Yard in Wichita, Kansas. They have a cool used tool section where I have gotten many riveting type tools.

    I use this pretty often at work as tractor trailer mechanic, just as strong as the mac air hammer but with more felt vibration. With the mac your paying for reduced recoil lol

    Really dig the reviews…. But what in the Velcro hell do you have on your feet… I’m not sure I can take serious tool advice from someone who wears Velcro shoes , obviously your hands work just fine the way you were wielding that air hammer, so I’m guessing you can tie your shoes… I would have even overlooked it if you were wearing crocs , or flip flops…

    I have a chief medium barrel. When I tell you compressor size matters, mine would have cut that aluminum billet in half in 3 seconds. 150psi compressor for the win. Your marflow wouldn't improve as much as that chief would. Try it out.
