The 110 tire I'm riding was provided by Tusk (as mentioned in the previous video). Alec paid for his tire. We have both ran many tires and love talking the ins and outs of tires and give our honest opinion on how the tire works for different types of tires.

I’m in the same spot right now trying to decide what to get because I’m tearing the crap out of harder tires. I’m going to order the recon now you pushed me over the edge haha thanks for the video
I just spent the weekend on a new tusk recon and loved it. I went down to texas and rode some really rocky single track, along with some hard pack dirt, tire hooked up great in those conditions. I have it on a 300rr with tubliss and was running it at 5psi. Really can't beat it for the price.
nice man. I I dont know if I know what TX single track looks like, only riding I think I've seen is revelimiter hard enduro
You're on it, bro! Shredded that Ibex pretty good. Recons are tough! Thumbs up for old KDX riders!
nice thanks!
I've found this tire to offer great grip on firm/hard terrain surfaces. When I get into softer terrain or when cornering aggressively I do find it to be a bit squirmy. My major concern when deciding to purchase this tire was how supportive the sidewall was going to be. I run tubliss in my wheels and have done so for many years now. I find with this system you are largely relying on sidewall stiffness and durability to support the tire on square edges and impacts. It doesn't take long for the sidewall to break down on a tire. This is your first form of suspension on your bike also. My go to tire has usually been the Dunlop AT81 Desert Carcass with the extra stiff sidewall. I just find the sidewalls hold up longer and the tire better retains a "new" tire feel from a sidewall support standpoint. This recon tire has impressed me and is working well and lasting a long time. It has some benefits but also some tradeoffs. This being said for soft high speed desert style riding I will probably stick with my go to Dunlop AT81 Desert tire. For lower speed technical riding this Recon is a great choice, especially if price is factor.
Love my tusk Recon after about 15 hours on my Beta 300RR Race. Rode Utah and Idaho single track and it still looks brand new! Does surprising well in SoCal desert terrain and hill climbs too!
I put a TUSK Recon on the back of my 2019 CRF250R and couldn’t be more impressed. My buddy swore by them and I kept putting off trying one, and am glad I finally pulled the trigger.
It has four gnarly New England rocky, rooty, muddy rides on it and is holding up well and seems to be getting better as it wears.
The same buddy also said the Shinko 216 Fat Tyre (front) was the way to go, so I bought one, and I also grabbed a Shinko 525 cheater to try out as a combo.
I’m definitely hooked on the Tusk Recon though.
I dig your channel, and your detailed videos. Thanks for the uploads
Again, late to the party but got a couple rides on the Tusk Recon front and rear, good wear so far but I'm a bottom C class rider. Ride open desert, sand and rocky stuff. It's kinda wiggly in the soft stuff but not enough to be a problem. I like it so far.
Ive been using the recon for a couple rides and ive had no issues whatsoever. Has held up pretty good, and no trouble getting traction in any conditions other then rainy wet plate rock. But thats to be expected
I have about 7 hours on the 120 recon with soft nitro mousse on my te300i. I love it so far. The only issue i had was when i was stuck on a nasty wet clay hill area in East Tennessee. Other than that the traction has been wild and the price even more wild. Love it, will be running it for a while.
haven't tried it in the clay but could see it being less optimal in that scenario. my buddy cut out every other knob with a knobby knife for more muddier stuff
@@TrailBoundco As long as you have the ability to clear the crud with speed its fine. But in the gnar that shit clogged up quick. But it was brand new and still had a bite.
I ran the 120 recon at Hatfeild McCoy Buffalo Mtn single track for 3 days. Rode a lot of rock and hard pack. Tire had great traction all around and wore much better than the ibex my buddy was running. Can’t beat the price on this one. I even took it out for a moto after that trip on a local track and it was surprising how it handled at speed in softer stuff. -19 ktm 300xc
There it is. You're riding style and use is exactly what my son and I do. We seek out knar in the mountains around us, and outside of Laughlin NV. Great vids, between you and Kyle you've saved me money and time.
I am always shopping around for different tires. It's like you said, there is no perfect option for all conditions. I will be putting a deep knob tire on for the winter, and will be back to riding gummies in the spring.
Sloppy pulls tubes out, fills tires with Fix a Flat and wraps em all up real tight with Trojans. HOLESHOTS FOR DAYZ!!!!!!!!!!
@@RacerRed #makeAmericaSloppyagain
Ps I was born with that face
Agree its a good tire. Id say it does nothing great but everything well. If your doing a long weekend trip with lots of mixed terrain and you don't want to smoke through a shinko or ibex half way through your weekend go with the recon. For me seemed to last almost twice as long as shinko 505.
It looks like a wonderful tire. Tusk usually has wonderful prices.
2:48. There’s a lot of knob left there considering how far you run yours down lol. Tried this tire on my 2019 CRF250R mainly New England woods and a little moto. All around great tire so far.
I have about 20 hours on mine great traction and it looks like is about 1/2 worn out. Saw you riding with your friends a few weekends ago. Tire works well in the Loam
Love the vids one of the most entertaining video and the editing and quality has gotten better since u started the CZcams thing. Have you tried STI tires? They last a decent while and the have a “enduro” version of their mx tire you might want to try out. They grab really good
Jace Perez awesome to hear, definitely been putting money into equipment and time into learning the video thing, it’s been fun to try and progress at it. I haven’t heard of STI, who sells that?
Trailbound co good to hear and STI tires are made by the same people that make STI tubes which are the best tubes out there in my opinion. They have a dot certified tire that looks kinda like the reacon with wider nobs. They have a off-road race tire and then they have a mx tire. I love them and would love to see your thoughts on the tires.
Thanks for the quick comparison to the VE-33s. I have that now and debated trying the Recon. In GA there is a LOT of hard packed clay, roots and rocks. So the Recon might work better here than the VE-33s since there's not a ton of sand or loam here.
I run both and live in GA. The Vee33s in wet terrain is superb. The Recon? No. Recon excels when it's loose, damp, rocky and mostly dry. The VEE in GA puts the grip on everything.
Ran a couple of set, love them, great bang for the buck set. Just ordered 1 Oct 2021 from rockymtnATV, $120 a set!!!
I like the ve33s and arena hybrid gummy too, but when running rocky jeep 2 track in Utah, Colorado or Idaho, the recon rocks, I usually change 30 ish hours, usually running TuBliss 8psi front, 4psi rear(I'm not fast).
I'll run JX8 now vs a ve33s when I'm trying to hang with riders that know more about traction than I :)
Just got one of these tires, looking forward to giving it a rip out here in Montana.
nice I tried it out in mt but not in the snowy months!
Great review. I really liked ours too!!
I have the 120 on a ktm300xc. I like it unless its dry soft spoil then its horrible it also lacks in downhill braking
Just ordered the tusk tire!
I'll be trying this tire next soon. :)
I have an 05 kx 250 that I've been running this recon on for the price you can't really beat it I have been riding a lot of rocks and roots I usually run a hard terrain shinko but for the price I figured I'd give it a shot I can't tell a huge difference in traction but I also run tubes at max psi because I like to hit some jumps here and there and hate getting flats
The way I see it is if Shinko sponsored me and sent me tires for free I would ride them. I smoke them in about 25 hours. I ride the Starcross 5 in mud, all rocks, creek beds etc I really like it. Give it a shot!
Ain't nobody sponsoring u lady boy
Question: When you got that flat, did the tire flop around a lot? In other words, how's the sidewall stiffness? I've been wondering about this tire, but I prefer tires with stiff sidewalls in case I have to finish a race on a flat. Running Tubliss BTW.
Great video dude, good to see so many good budget friendly tires out on the market. I was wondering if you have heard of X-grip, they're a European brand and I can't find much about them and was just wondering if you would be down to give them a look.
BlobFish thank you I’m not sure about them, do they sell in the us? I’ve got some euro tires on the way to test and review
@@TrailBoundco unfortunately I believe you have to buy them from the website. However, I love in Australia so I wouldn't know if there is someone distributing them in the US
I totally get the "my wallet can't fit the budget" comment but that tire is over due by at least 20 hours.
Jason Padgett hahaha i was kind of bummed I had to take it off so early, there were still knobs left
6 ro 9 psi is leaving so much low speed traction on the table.. i usually leave the truck at 5 and air Dow from there.
can you try the irc jx8
Ran the recon for about 100 miles in Utah single track mountains and alpine desert, felt like it rolled a lot, and felt like the tire was flat, ran 10 to 15psi, always felt like the tire was flat on hard pack, had good straight line traction not so good Corning traction, wear was good.
Now running the IRC VE33S it has a 4ply side wall were the Recon I believe has a 2ply?
How are you running such low PSI and not worried about Pinch flats? Even 4mm thick tubes at 13 - 14 psi I still get flats? I ride a lot of desert and Alpine riding (similar to Donner hare scramble area) specifically (Downieville CA) and (Moonrocks Nv). I have just Started on the Tusk tire and so far so good. Even higher speeds it still stable.
have you seen my double rim lock video? that helps from ripping the valve core flats. but I yeah I dont get many pinch flats but I usually try to find the slowest nastiest stuff to ride so I'm not really going high speed unless it's an enduro race which I haven't done in a while
@@TrailBoundco Thanks for the tip. I never really rip valve stems just usually the pinch flat gets me. Most of the riding I do has combinations of high speed rocky and Super low speed Technical (the things you like to ride.) I am thinking about trying tubliss but not sure how it is going to handle the high speed rocky.
@@brandonfreeman4281 Trojans and fix a flat, only way to go
Love it on the 300xc, But the 120 is really tall.
koehn979 I’ve got the 120 on now, not really noticing anything strange. What is the advantage or disadvantage to a tall tire?
@@TrailBoundco gearing?
I have 12.5 hours on my tusk recon. So far I love it, I’m surprised how much tread it still has after running it hard. I’ve tried the ibex also but it just wore out way to fast. Coming into the winter months what’s your favorite tire to run in the winter in nor-cal. I’m thinking of trying the 525 cheater this winter.
i've been running the 525 cheater in se Minnesota in the river valley area. some sandstone and rocky creekbeds, lots of loam, lots of logs and tree roots. I'm super happy with it. about 20 hours and its still got a good bit of life left. I don't really have anything to compare it with cuz its my first hybrid tire. I'm going to get the tusk recon for a trip to south dakota. lots of rock there.
Try the Metzler super soft
Some have said the tire is a lot taller than other tires. Did you notice this in your gearing?
Go with the 110 the 120 is pretty big.
What would your issue be with a tall tire? I haven’t noticed
@@TrailBoundco A tall tire makes the gearing taller and changes the rake so you'd have to compromise by lowering the forks in the triple clamp.
@@TrailBoundco You would notice right off the bat if it was.
What front are you running an any recommendation I ride where there are alot of wet roots
Any, you should be wheeling over them! XD ... JK
GoldenTyre 216AA fatty (90/100)
So if you are ridding Donner, are you a Northern California guy?
Adam Batchelder yes sir
@@TrailBoundco cool contact me on the side if you want. Looks like you like ridding what we ride but I can't talk about it in public adambatchelder@gmail.com.
Great long lasting tire but is shyte in mud or slick hard pack. I'm at 50 + hours and it still hasn't lost a lug.
How is the sidewall stiffness. I run tu-bliss. Thoughts?
thanks man!
I'm never gonna run a tire til it looks like that......at least not as long as I can afford new ones
Have you ran the recon fatty front. I ran it on my 250 xcw and I don’t know I kinda felt it was a little heavy. Maybe it’s because I’ve never ran a fatty but I felt I struggled because the front end felt a little heavy. What are your thoughts on a fatty front?
Pretty stoked on my 120 recon with nitromousses right now. Only 8hrs in so far
nice man I want to put the 120 on and see how the wide one works, that thing is big!
Can you run this tire on the track as a novice rider?
How does it handle sandy stuff?
What tubes are you running ?
Where did you ride in MT?
Great cohesive run down.
How did the recon do in loam / mossy root wet rock. I too need a front tire suggestion
unfortunately it's dry AF in the west but I did get some wet roots in Idaho, I didn't seem to have any advantage or disadvantage over my buddies ve33s or at81x
It does good in the wet, mossy roots and rocks.
It works in the wet and over roots. I was surprised how good it was. Only thing it doesn't do too well is thick mud. But I try to avoid that if possible. I cant say that many tires would do great in thick mud.
How does it compare in longevity to a 505?
carl atamanczyk I got 7-12 hours more than previous 505 I have ridden
I liked the tire, but I'm not buying any more tires made in China.
