    That is an epic ride! There is nothing in Europe that can match the freeway system of Houston. Sure, there are some wide highways and big interchanges here and there, but nothing so big as Houston, with 50 miles of 10 lane freeways and massive 5 level interchanges, not to mention those reversible facilities with separate interchanges.

      @InterstateJD  Před 6 lety +8

      Houston is, without a doubt, the city with the most consistently logical and impressive freeway system in the country, and perhaps the world. The way the land is developed in Houston allows for the establishment of roadway infrastructure that is clearly something else. With that being said, I'd definitely trade some of that for a more comprehensive intercity rail system, as is common in Western Europe! :)

      The spread-out nature of Houston's high rises outside the city center makes driving the elaborate freeways an amazing experience. That tower is the Phoenix Tower in the Greenway Plaza district.

      Thanks! This was the first time I actually tried to get the signs (with the exception a few bits such as the express exit signs, those I made up) to 100% match the Texas MUTCD. It was irritating at times, and I know I probably had a few mess-ups, but overall I'm glad with how well they turned out.

    Amazing Video! It actually hit me that you haven't uploaded a video in 7 months. Music caught me off guard but it works. The Southwest Freeway is my favorite in the Houston area due to the sheer urbanity of it.

      @InterstateJD  Před 6 lety

      Yeah ive been a combination of both busy and lazy (mostly lazy, admittedly) over this time. In terms of sheer impressiveness, pound for pound, the Southwest Freeway takes the cake, but my personal favorite in Houston is probably the North Freeway, north of Beltway 8. Thanks for watching!

      You might've noticed the big concentrations of german/asian vehicles on the stretch from the Bellaire Blvd/Fondren Rd Exit to the US 90 exit. It's because that area in SE Houston has a huge Vietnamese/Chinese/Korean population. Basically an ethnic enclave. We have lots of family down there.

    Wow, they have really developed the Eastex section since I last lived in Houston (moved away in ‘95). Looks much better! The SW freeway still looks every bit as intimidating as it always did, though stunning. I usually viewed it from bumper to bumper logjam conditions on my commute from Montrose to Sugarland. Much more attractive when moving at a steady pace. Driving the full length of the SW freeway is where you really get an idea of just how big Houston is. The only other stretches of freeway in Texas that even come close to providing an equal urban experience is the Central Expressway in North Dallas, and the stretch of West Loop 610 from the SW freeway North to the 290 interchange.

    Houston's freeways sure beat those in the DFW area, but we are starting to catch up. We would have gotten even closer to matching Houston if it hadn't been for substandard expansions like the 35Express project on I-35E through Carrollton and Lewisville, and now the Texas Legislature wants to cut back on toll roads. We really need the toll funding to expand our freeways with express lanes, including US-75 Central Expressway, but I don't want to see another substandard project like 35Express (even though that was only the first phase, we'll have to deal with it for some time to come until TxDOT gets the funding for the full build, which will match some of Houston's biggest freeways especially between PGBT and 121).
    Of course, we have suburban sprawl (and a build-happy TxDOT) to blame for our epic freeway systems here in Texas.

    • @plorsomnia
      @plorsomnia Před 6 lety +1

      I find DFW's freeways great in pockets but Houston seems to be consistently urban in almost all areas of the metro. For example, I really like the Central Expressway, Stemmons, and Dallas North Tollway but that's about it. I-30/1-20 seems really dull along with I-35E south of downtown Dallas. What actually strikes me as weird is how absolutely shit the beginning of I-45 is. You have the grandeur of the US 75 then it immediately dies off when it turns into I-45. As shown here, the Southwest Freeway, in addition to the Gulf/North Freeway, Katy freeway, Eastex and East freeway to an extent, all seem to be consistently urban. There is consistent development on the edges of these freeways.

    • @BrandonClaridge
      @BrandonClaridge Před 6 lety +1

      Wesley,
      I would say that the reason I-45 in Dallas is the way it is is largely due to the fact that it straddles the Trinity floodplain, and that the southeastern portion of Dallas doesn't have as much demand for development since it is a largely lower socioeconomic area. That said, I do see the potential for development on I-45 south of I-20 (Wilmer-Hutchins area, along with Ferris) given the quick commute to downtown Dallas and the proximity to the intermodal terminal there. Though for Wilmer-Hutchins you would need better schools before families would be more willing to locate there, as the area gets Dallas ISD schools.
      And with regard to Stemmons Freeway, I'm not really a fan of that freeway as it is older and substandard in many places. It needs to be reconstructed from 635 to I-30, that's for sure. Even the recently rebuilt section of I-35E north of 635 (35Express) needs to be rebuilt again. US-75 Central Expressway seems the most Houston-like with respect to the development fronting the freeway, though 635 northeast (from US-75 to I-30 east) also feels very Houston-like with respect to its freeway configuration with its HOV lanes and especially the high-mast lighting. Same can be said for I-30 from Dallas to Grand Prairie (less development due to the Trinity floodplain), but it has reversible express lanes, wishbone ramps, and high-mast lighting, much like a Houston freeway... the continuous high-mast lighting actually continues west to Cooper Street in Arlington, and the segment of I-30 through Arlington would definitely feel more like the Katy Freeway if all the pavement were utilized fully, but there will need to be some intervening reconstruction eastwards from 360 to the Dallas County line and westwards from Cooper Street to at least the I-820 east loop in Fort Worth before that can happen.

    • @Brewzerr
      @Brewzerr Před 6 lety +1

      Yes, I have never understood why more DFW freeways didn’t follow the Central Expressway model. CE is an amazing example of freeway engineering and design. The entire stretch from the high-five to the I-45 interchange goes toe to toe with any of Houston’s best. Probably more funding went to DART instead.
