How realistic is medieval Ireland in Crusader Kings 3?

- Many new players of Crusader Kings start their history with the game on the small and remote island of Ireland, which has earned the kingdom the jesting name of "noob island". In this video, we are looking at how historically accurate Paradox portrayed medieval Ireland, and which of the characters and concepts in the game reflect Ireland's historical reality.

I was born in Derry City in the north and got a BA in Archaeology and Greek and Roman Civilization in UCD Dublin (even took a specific class on the High Kingship of Ireland) and I feel you did a fairly good job portraying the snapshot of Ireland and the political situation there in 1066.
I am actually a descendant of Domnall Ua Lochlainn, who is depicted in the game as being the ruler of Oriel (not accurate of course as you explained).
Unfortunately, the start date of 1066 was a really messy time for the Kingdom of Aileach (pronounced like the name Alec by the way). So it looks like they decided to try to simplify it a bit. An Áed Ua hUalgairg was King of Aileach in 1066 but he is gone only a year later, replaced by Domnall mac Néill (the Poor) in 1067 who himself was replaced in 1068 by another Áed, Áed mac Néill who lasted until 1083 when Domnall Ua Lochlainn, my ancestor, finally became King of Aileach (after a very brief stint by a guy named Donnchad mac Néill who didn't even last a year).
The real king of Airgíalla (Oriel is the anglicized name so not accurate at this point) in 1066 was a certain Leathlobair Ua Laidhgnen. Don't know anything about him specifically.
So I can forgive the game developers saying screw it. lol
Thank you so much for your professional input and positive feedback!
Funny coincidence, my first ever game was with Aileach and I really loved it
I lived on Derry for a few years. It's a great city with charming and funny people with a very complicated history! Crazy that it's the only European city to still have its old city walls
@@antonironstag5085 that fact about the walls can't be true knowing how many historical-looking cities are scattered across the continent. Maybe it was for the British isles only?
@@antonironstag5085I’m Italian and I can assure u that most of Italian cities have still their ancient walls.
@@historyinbitsStarting on an Insular holy site is a power move. That or Desmond because it's slightly more developed.
This is such an excellent concept! Using crusader kings, and other titles, to teach history! You nailed the execution! Do you have any idea on what you’re doing next?
This means a lot to us, thank you very much! And thank you for subscribing! Our next video will probably be a historical assessment of the 1990s city-builder ‘Caesar 3’.
czcams.com/users/Rosencreutzzz is a really good channel for stuff like this. It’s not the exact same as they deal with less specific history and more philosophy but they do really good videos!
@@historyinbits It was a great video! My only quibble was that you didn't post your sources, which I think is important. I would also be interested in them.
@@historyinbits could you please look at how the middle east is portrayed versus real life?
He hasnt in the least tho...
With the Rite tenant added to Insular as well, it's now more focused on the idea that it's simply a slight deviation from Catholicism itself. They still recognize the Pope as their head of faith within the current game state, which brings certain advantages and disadvantages.
@History in Bits
I'm the developer of the Improved Insular mod. Check out the TIP Vol. II mod - play it with no other mods enabled. I think you'll enjoy Ireland in that; hope you decide to make a vid!
Very cool to hear from you! Thank you for the tip :D
Just a heads up, the language spoken in Ireland isn’t typically called Gaelic, I think that’s more so for Scotland. Far as I’m aware it can be called gaelic, and is included in that group of languages, but typically is referred to by another name. Irelands language is called Irish in English, and Gaeilge in Irish. It’s closely related to Scottish Gaelic but it’s not the same. Your pronunciation for Irish words seemed pretty good to me overall though
Thank you so much for your input! Do you speak Irish?
I came here to say the same thing. It's a minor nitpick but the idea that the Irish language is called Gaelic has this odd ubiquity outside of Ireland. In Ireland it's extra confusing because we have Gaelic Football, and many people simply refer to Gaelic Football as just "Gaelic". The end result is that well intentioned foreigners often end up doing the equivalent of asking us if we speak soccer
Edit: by the way I really enjoyed the video
@@OisinMcColgan01 Nooo my Irish brother, don't tell me that in Ireland you guys say soccer too instead of football😔
@@kunatix7033 We say football, but that just makes my earlier comment even more confusing
@@kunatix7033 We call it ground ball or the foreign game.
It makes so much sense to explain the historical backgrounds of the game, because you understand so much more about the roles and the context! Great! And very entertaining!
Thank you!
If you do another breakdown like this, I highly suggest Armenia and the Caucasus as a whole, Paradox seems pretty confused when choosing rulers there. For example, in 867 they have the historical Bagrationi ruler of Tao-Klarjeti be the ruler of Kakheti for some reason, when in reality Kakheti was ruled by the independent Donauri dynasty. The guy they have ruling Tao-Klarjeti should actually be ruling in the principality of Daron/Taron, which doesn't even exist in-game!
this man deserves so much more subs that he has, so much effort obviously put into this
Thank you so much for the positive feedback! Very excited about the increasing support coming in!
Changes were made in both 1.5 and 1.6 versions that make Insular seem more like a regional branch of Catholics. 1.5 made polygamy an Irish cultural tradition rather than a tenet of Insular. 1.6 made the Pope the spiritual leader of Insular.
Really interesting idea for video and way to learn something new about history, keep it up mate 👍🏼
Thank you so much man! Really appreciate it :)
I saw someone else had corrected the Gaelic bit and your pronunciations are generally very good for a non-speaker, but my one clarification would be that Irish people just call the state Ireland, it's only Brits that call it Republic of Ireland (which is a football team, not the proper name for the country!)
Great video, thanks!
I'm just discovered your channel and I already know that is going to be one of my favorites! Keep doing this man is awsome!
Thank you so much, we really appreciate the positive feedback!
Nice to see Ireland getting some attention. I've made a number of videos on Ireland in CK3 on my channel, including one on Murchad. I'd be interested to know what sources you have that say he ruled until 1068 as all the ones I've read say that Toirdelbach ruled Munster from 1063. Paradox copied the Munster Kings list from Wikipedia and Murchad was added to that as the result of a misreading of an Irish academic text. Toirdelbach was the ruler of Munster in the 1066 start in CK1 but later games took heavily from Wikipedia, for which I think they can be criticized.
6:56 You say you couldn't find any characters in Meath that reflected real historical figures. The guy on screen as you say that, Conchobar Ua Máelshechlainn, defeated Murchad (King of Dublin) in 1070 (which resulted in his death) and then killed his father, Diarmaid mac Máel na mBó (King of Leinster/High King) in 1072, after which Toirdelbach rose to the High Kingship. The guy who made the improved insular christianity mod also did one where Toirdelbach starts as King of Munster.
If you haven't check out forvo (.) com, it has recordings of native speakers of various languages pronouncing words. Lots of Irish names and place names there.

I been seaching for this kind of content for so long. It's awelsome play ck3 knowing better the history of that place, i hope to see more ck3 videos.
I've been playing Ireland as a majority of my games since before Holy Fury in CK2 and love the setting, hoping one day I'll be able to visit and see Eire for myself. Great video, btw.
This video was excellent! It was really fascinating to see all the detail put into this little corner of the map. I think I want to do some more research of my own in a similar vein, particularly with Novgorod, as that was the first region I ever played as in CK3.
I have to admit I never played in Novgorod, but I think I will do soon!!
@@historyinbits definitely should. Its good fun. Maybe not the best start, but once youre knowledgable its quite enjoyable (if you can bear a fee viking invasions)
Brilliant work, thanks for the video and very good effort on all the pronunciations too.

Great video! I'd love it if you would make more videos comparing CK3 to actual history. Great stuff!
Already working on it :)
While I struggled my way through playing as the Rurikid dynasty before playing as Count Eudes of Anjou, Ireland is such a relaxing way to get into the game. I’ve been messing around with Norse invasions of the British Isles and it always ends up that Ireland just chills while we all duke it out
Very interesting video and original concept. I really like that you took the time to look for actual information and contrast it with the game, what a brilliant idea. I hope that you keep making this kind of videos.

With Struggle for Iberian DLC, insular shares religious head of the pope with the Catholic church with mozarab (new faith). Definitely think it is odd to have a new faith represented in the game yet no mozarabic culture in.
As an Irish person, I have to compliment the pronunciation of Old and Middle Irish names and places! I haven't a clue if you used the IPA in order to accurately pronounce them but it was really well done!
Amazing content!

Just an idea, but if you do decide to do more of these kinds of videos for CK3, you should also consider adding the characters you talk about to the "Interesting characters" page on the Crusader Kings 3 wiki. Lots of players check there for ideas of whom to play, and I imagine you could add quite a bit to it with your research.
The subtitles when you try to pronounce things is brilliant 😂
Really good video, just want to say although our system was similar to feudalism, It was very different in many ways too, mainly in the structure of command as a chieftain didn’t have an heir, instead that heir would be voted upon by the entire family including everyone but the lower class, slaves and serfs. The chief also held less power than for example an English feudal lord as there was a council between the upper class of the clan called a „derbfine“ which could often overrule the decision of a chief.
This was done in CK2 with the tanistry succession law. I don't know if CK3 has that.
i'm not irish, but i'm Scottish and speak Scottish gaelic(Gàidhlig), a language that roots off irish(Gaeilge). As a Gàidhlig speaker i think your pronouncations were brilliant.
Gàidhlig speaker woooo!
My first game of CK3 was on Murchad. I remember conquering that island in like 10 years county by county without acknowledging the "broke a truce" debuff. Everyone hated this guy and I was like why the fuck??? My domain limit was like 12/4 and probably all of them had 0 control. Game finished with a rebellion that took the Irish throne.
Too keen!
I subscribed in hopes of more ck3 content like this.
Will be coming!
You really could make a series using CK3 to explore different historical kingdoms. Great video
Thank you for the compliment, more videos are on the way :)
I adored my time with the Petty Kingdom of Munster which I turned into the Kingdom of Ireland...my greatest achievements was adopting to Catholicism and participating in the crusades, I basically carried the team and installed my benefactor, my brother as King of Jerusalem. Shortly after I had a somewhat unsuccessful conquest of Iberia(tried to revived the celtiberians) and eventually installed my sister as Queen of Galicia. Then my character died, meaning Jerusalem's and Galicia split of from Ireland as per inheritance laws, and my new character had a bad relationship towards his uncle and aunt. And finally, as a noob I thought I could conquer England with the help of my ally, my brother in law, the holy roman emperor, but refused to join, so I quit...tried coming back to that save after the Royal Court update released, but it's corrupted...Regardless and TLDR, there will always be a spot in my heart for Ireland in CK3, regardless of slander.
I guess you cant get around trying to conquer England in order to form an empire, otherwise the inheritance laws will just keep screwing you. Thank you for sharing :)
@@historyinbits Exactly lol🤣
The second he called Irish Gaelic I realised this video would be tough to sit through
i like dis especially the voice you used to read the paradox forum comment
Haha :D
Very nice video! Part of my love of CK3 is because it fuels my love of medieval history, so dives into what aspects of the game are historical vs. strictly mechanical are always welcome in my book.
RE: the subject of "Insular" Christianity in the game, it's worth noting that the devs have stated they aren't fully satisfied with current religious mechanics in CK3. There have already been some changes (perhaps most notably in the form of allowing multiple faiths to share a single spiritual head, so as to more accurately portray the Islamic world), and I wouldn't be surprised if we see a future religion-focused update that includes making the dynamic between the two Catholicisms a bit more nuanced.
Seeing how well informed your videos are, I would like to know what starting date (and why) you would like to see being added to ck3 ?
Any intriguing kingdom / potential characters you thinks would made adding another starting date relevant.
Thanks 👍
Great idea for a video propped up by great research, narration, and editing. Liked, subscribed, and waiting for more videos like this one. Especially from CK3.
Thank you so much! Will be coming :)
Very good video, thank You! Why not do other similar videos about other CKIII areas?
Thank you, will do :)
Oh this is fantastic! I've been working on a project concerning Ireland from 1263 to 1324 and this helps a lot! The project by the way is about Dame Alice Kyteler, the Flemish Irish woman who was among the richest women in Ireland in her day, welded much influence and power, and was accused of witchcraft. Also was maybe one of histories first serial killers. Fascinating lady and knowing Ireland in the middle ages is very useful.
Sounds fascinating as well! What are you doing the project for, are you a history student?
@@historyinbits Oh I'm a paralegal in training but I've always loved history. Its a CZcams project because I love just putting hours of effort into it but it also works towards paralegal studies because the trial of Dame Alice Kyteler hinges on if secular middle ages law or papal canon law held more power in Ireland. The church won that fight in the end.
I recently did a video on Vic3s Africa with a similar premise to yours.
I am very impressed with this video and will probably take some inspiration of you for my future content.

This might be a stretch but is your intro the Seikilos song? The 8-bit remix throws it off a bit but it sounds just like it. Great video by the way!
Yes it is Seikilos! Kudos for recognising it!
a new favorite niche channel
We are flattered! If you have any input or suggestions let us know!
This brings me back to one of my first playthroughs where I started as munster and accidentally created a kingdom of dwarf geniuses
as an Irish person I can say this is a really great representation of my countries history, although it might have been better to describe the differences between mainland feudalism and pre Norman Irish Brehon law because the Irish was based a lot more in pre Christiaan Celtic customs and laws and was almost democratic in a way definitely look it up it's very interesting. over all though an-maith buachaill
I always liked how in one start time, you're playing the grandson, or great grandson of Brian Boru if you picked the correct county in the SW of Ireland. Oh you covered it. I thought there was one descendant you could play. Of course, I was talking about CK2 whereas you are talking about CK3.
Similar to Murchad, when I was looking into Welsh history I found the first prince of Wales is alive at the start of the game, but unlanded and comes to power with foreign help not long (15 years) after the game start. I would like to play as the real first prince of wales but it's not normally available.
I think it would be fun and interesting if you did cover Tales of Ireland and compare that to historical evidence.
I did Gaelic Studies at University (albeit focussing on Scotland rather than Ireland), and you honestly don't do a bad job of the pronunciations, doubly so for someone with no other exposure to the language. Really refreshing and a far cry from the absolute butcherings I'm used to from much of elsewhere in the CK/Paradox CZcams scene. Obair dhiongalta, cum ort!
I want to let you know that Paradox has modified Insular Christianity in the “Fate of Iberia” as part of the free patch. The new Rite tenant allows a faith to have the Catholic Pope as their head of faith while having different doctrines. It does give the Catholic Pope a -10 opinion of characters of faiths with Rite.
Mozarabic Christianity which was the focus of the DLC was given a unique decision to either bind to Rome or break with Rome. I have not played as Irish since the update so I don’t know if they have a similar decision, but I hope they do.
I would also like to see your opinion on Irish Culture as represented in the free update that accompanied the Royal Court DLC.
As Ireland is a small part of my family history I am always curious to learn more.
with the upcoming landless DLC coming later this year it would be a really interesting(and I assume difficult) start to paly as the guy at 3:57 and try to get the kingdom of Ireland before your death
Could you make a seperate video of the history and tales, of the mod that you mentioned "tales of Ireland". It's such a cool mod, but I and probably alot others are overwhelmed by all different invasions and folktales and just get confused
I’ll look into it!
Great video. Could you make a similiar one about Kingdom of Croatia?
I’ll look into it! What’s your favourite character there?
@@historyinbits well of course the king Petar Krešimir IV the Great (only Croatian king to be called great) other than that knez Domagoj.
I always start in Ireland. I love working my way up from Desmond, uniting the Irish and then taking out the norse populations. Then I slowly work my way through Wales and Cornwall. My favourite way to completely taking over Brittania 😊😊❤❤
Niice, thanks for sharing 😊
Norse Populations: -_-
@@Zogerpogger LOL
First part of video hits hard. I remember my struggle with spanish Jimena's
I think the funniest thing here is that CK3 finally actually made Ireland not the best place to start for a new player....
and then immediately reversed that with it's first major DLC by making the kingdom of mann just stupidly OP.
Sure, you either need a custom ruler or to "start" somewhere else, but most norse factions can extremely easily just pop a varangian adventure and go move to Ireland. And a lot of the smaller norse factions start in nearly the same exact situation as most of the Irish leaders, especially places like Iceland, etc.
At launch, everyone was actually super excited for the fact that you were generally better off starting off somewhere like Italy as a vassal of the HRE, but then they just had to go and give the british isles not just the single most overpowered decision in the game, but also a second major decision that gives you a huge de jure empire that you can VERY easily jump into from the first decision.
And now we're just straight back to "yeah, just start in ireland lul".
(Watches this while I wait for my MacBook to offload files so I can play CK3 and have my Greco-Egyptian empress of Rome annex Ireland into the Empire)
Sounds like an interesting game! :D
Thanks for shedding more light on the little known history of the Irish church
Do you have a list of changes I could use if I wanted to make a mod improving accuracy?
Quick question: What's the music you're using? Specifically around 3:30 with that awesome mead hall cheering vibe haha

Great video, and I do appreciate the huge effort made in the pronunciation.
I started in Wexford, to play as Leinster since Dublin is Norse. And I have to disagree that Insular is a net negative, polygamy is a huge boon in dynastic system of Ck3.
Use the voiced th sound for Meath. Like the th in father. Solid job with the rest of the pronunciation!

Nice video and all, but I need to bring attention to something far more important.
You have Edge Scrolling enabled.
What kind of maniac subjects themselves to that annoyance?
I downloaded the royal court for my console and since then it keeps crashing. Any tips on how to fix it?
You are mocking (a bit :) ) the comments about Insular Christianity, but one of the main historical critics is valid : in the 9th century (and pre Gregorian Reform catholicism in general) lot of places in Europe would have their own flavour of catholicism and are not in the game as a Faith, and Insular Christianity is in CK3 only because it is well known in an english speaking country.
That’s a very good point. It would be interesting to see how complex one could explore the various branches of Catholicism and the other main faiths. But perhaps a bit frightening to new players!
And we promise the mocking is in good faith, and just a bit of fun !
I think in recent updates having insular have the pope as head of faith helps a lot
I agree
My first playthrough in ireland lasted less then a month before the chess with death event fired and gave me a game over.
VERY interesting. Keep going with other videos about historical accuracy compared to our beloved games.
Thank you! Hope to see you around for future videos :)
Wasn't a feature of the struggle for Iberia patch that insular now has an odd status where they still consider the pope head of Faith?
one of my first ck (2) gameplays was as Laughlin, i turned it into an empire spanning across all of Britain and a huge chunk of france before the sunset invasion landed on ireland itself. i was tempted to quit st that point but i pushed through. what i did was come under the wing of the aztec empire and essentially destroy it from the inside out. safe to say i pushed them back to the spanish peninsula where they remained to this day
Sounds like a really interesting game!!
Fun Star trek connection, in one episode of DS9 O'Brian and Bashir are heading to the holodeck to reenact the Battle of Clontarf. When Bashir asks why O'Brian gets to be the High King, O'Brian claims that he is a direct descendant of Brian Boru.
Loving this!
It's nice but a bit silly - a bit like everyone of European descent is descended from Charlemagne I'd assume that almost everyone of Irish descent is descended from Boru, especially in the 24th century
Ironically my grandmother is an O'Brien, r descendants of Brian Boru and my name is O'Bruidair (Brodir), the name of the Viking that killed Brian Boru.
Hey there, what source did you use for this? You mentioned some article by Peter Crooks but I can't seem to find it.

It's a great island to start out on to learn how combat and wars work, and has many choices for growth. Most of the terrain being marshlands stinks for development, but if you have royal courts there are culture core values that can negate some of it. Regardless great video.

I'm Kinda sad I can't play as Olaf the White like in CK2, Always found it more fun to unite Ireland as him rather than Ivar the Boneless. But oh well maybe one day I will come around and do that and form a Norse-Gaels Kingdom/Empire
There must be a mod for this, right? :D
@@historyinbits There is no mod in CK3 involving Olaf the White as far as I know, you can play is his widow Aud the Deep-Minded in Iceland however
I started as a tiny county in Africa. Realm devide scared me half to death, but after the third time it happened, I finally figured out what was happening, but had no idea how to stop it. After killing serveral generations worth of siblings and vassals to keep my domain, I was finally removed from power shortly after I establised the Empire Of Guinea. What brought me down, you ask? War? Rebellion? No. I just didn't know what matrilineal marraige meant. So my son was not from my dynasty.
Never played in ireland in ck3. Would be a fun multiplayer challenge for everyone to be a different irish lord and try to unite ireland under ones own rule. Also idk if its just me but i think that another good ”noob” start for ck3 is as a duke in the hre since theres alot of opportunities naturally progress and become the ruler of the hre and expand your empire. Also the elections are quite fun for me to manipulate the results of in my favor
In every game, I always start off with a low ranking, nobody character, who slowly rises through the ranks through Machiavellian scheming, opportunities, battles, good relations with the lords..etc
It's just more satisfying and relateable, instead of starting off immediately as a king or emperor.
Ireland seems fine from what you've said. Anatolia is honestly one of the biggest historical inaccuracies in terms of culture, in the game. There's just a sea of Greek rather than it being separated into Greek which occupies mainland Greece and the coasts, Cappadocian which occupies the middle of Anatolia and is a hybrid culture, Pontic which occupies areas of the Black sea coast of Anatolia and is a hybrid culture between Greek and Persian and lastly Italiot which exists mainly in southern Italy and Sicily. It's weird that Paradox chose to split every other previously monolithic culture other than Greek.
You are right, that massive Greek culture extension is indeed odd. Thank you for sharing!
Bahahahaha the way you read out that dudes comment 😂 made my week. My names Scott Milkensen and I have diabetes 😂
Honestly I can't remember what my first game of CK3 was like, I just phased that out of my mind lol
I guess that happens, it is hard in the beginning :D
Please do the HRE next! Were they really always constantly in debt?
4:50 you can technically do this, just land the guy, and switch to him, then do the whole coup thing
I wonder if you can play as Toirdelbach if you grant him land and then switch to him. Could be fun.
I always wondered if we unified early, Ireland didn't become a kingdom until 18 June 1542, and that Kingdom was a client state of the Kingdom of England from its inception until 1 May 1707 when the Kingdoms of England and Scotland merged to Great Britain until 1 January 1801 was when Great Britain and the Kingdom of Ireland merged to create the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland.
Your pronunciation is amazing! So impressed, can tell you really tried 👏
Well that was weird, first actual footage of ireland (clocktower) in the clip is about 200 steps from my front door.
I swear we are not that small of a country.
Could you compare the Seljuks in-game and the Seljuks in real life?
