      Yes, people here in the U.S. tend to get all wrapped around the axl over African slavery, but the truth is, every culture on this planet kept slaves or enslaved other people, at one time or the other. In fact, it continues to this day in some places.
      In the case of Rome and the Church though, they pretty much tried to enslave the entire known world for the sake of building an empire.
      And they decided that if they couldn't do it with a sword, they'd use religion.
      ...and a sword.
      And due to that, I'd have to say that if I could only have one 'hero' in history, it's probably Hermann/Arminius, for showing the Roman Empire what a sword was really for.
      ...though I am rather fond of folks like Boudica and a few others as well.

    As an ex-Christian Briton shifting back to my animist traditions & rituals, I find that I can relate more intimately with the natural world which is tangible, rather than to some made-up perpetually angry/revengeful/ judgemental "father" sitting somewhere in the sky. This has given me an immense sense of freedom, liberation and lightness of mind.
    This movement away from the "Abrahamic faiths" is picking up (Asatru, Zoroastrianism, Atheism, etc..) and I feel this is for the betterment not only for peace among humans, but more importantly for endangered animals and forests.

If they don't ask, don't tell. I feel like YOU are the one that needs saving. And yet I didn't even attempt to convert you. You have the ability to make your own decisions. So does everyone else. I think there are two kinds of philosophies/religions at the core of the human attitude toward the world: working and living with Nature and all its manifestations, or against Her. This cannot work at a superficial level but must be deeply felt tangibly. Now that we and our cultures are all inspired by one mighty god, handing over the Earth to man for his exploitation, I think humanity must get closer and respect nature above himself, which can only be done through our emotions and experience. If Nature were our Gods, we wouldn't poison her atmosphere, the oceans, and rivers; we wouldn't destroy the Earth but respect Her and feel Her above and with us. We need Nature, and not the other way around.
    So, I was always more drawn to Taoism, Shamanism, and European Paganism, which strongly sustains such principles. As the new generations must save this planet, there is no other choice for avoiding assured extinction. I believe that this path is much more appropriate for the survival of humanity-building a sustainable world in our real lives and in accord with its spirituality-than worshiping a single almighty god disconnected from our life support.

      Whether you have skandinavian dna in your blood or not, does not matter. During the viking age, norwegians in Ireland tried spreading the norse faith to the irish locals in areas they controlled. You also have the norsemen and danes who married women from the British Isles and eastern Europe, and brought them back to Skandinavia. Many of these women likely converted to the norse faith, as we have found gaelic women buried in norse pagan burial mounds in Norway. Therefore, no matter your ethnicity, you can convert if you feel like it is the right thing to do.

    • @systerkeno
      @systerkeno Před 3 lety +2

      It's not nazi ideals. It's just how traditions connected to paganism works around the world. If you go to Ethiopia or Gambia...Swaziland or Malawi.. All pagan traditions are based on the folk being connected to it. The same in most Asian areas. If one feels like honoring gods even if it's from another nation or people, that's okay. It's not like people are going to hate you. People might have a hard time understanding it. I was a Rastafari pagan for many years and almost every Ethiopian thought it was strange that I honored another people's God when I had no connection to the land. I then realized that, in contrast to my friends with Ethiopian ancestors, I did not feel any real connection to the Ethiopian land and nature, so I turned around and found my right place honoring the gods of my land and ancestors. Go your way and try things out but beware that it's absolutely not a nazi thing or a racist thing. That can be quite loaded to claim. Some people in Germany and Europe just happened to start believing in the norse gods again, it wasn't even official NSDAP belief. NSDAP were officially Christian, not pagan. Many of the people who started the pagan wave at that time were actually Slavic people who happened to live in or close to Germany. No-one wants to be compared to nazis just because keeping traditions that were there long long before they were a thing.

    The more I argued with them, the better I came to know their dialectic. First they counted on the stupidity of their adversary, and then, when there was no other way out, they themselves simply played stupid. If all this didn't help, they pretended not to understand, or, if challenged, they changed the subject in a hurry, quoted platitudes which, if you accepted them, they immediately related to entirely different matters, and then, if again attacked, gave ground and pretended not to know exactly what you were talking about. Whenever you tried to attack one of these apostles, your hand closed on a jelly-like slime which divided up and poured through your fingers, but in the next moment collected again. But if you really struck one of these fellows so telling a blow that, observed by the audience, he couldn't help but agree, and if you believed that this had taken you at least one step forward, your amazement was great the next day. The j*w had not the slightest recollection of the day before, he rattled off his same old nonsense as though nothing at all had happened, and, if indignantly challenged, affected amazement; he couldn't remember a thing, except that he had proved the correctness of his assertions the previous day. Sometimes I stood there thunderstruck. I didn't know what to be more amazed at: the agility of their tongues or their virtuosity at lying. Gradually I began to hate them.

    Actually the sources have some Christian influence but not a lot because according to scholars the Poetic Edda doesn’t have any Christian influence because there linguistic features in the Poetic Edda that show that the poems can be dated well before the christianization of Iceland. You have to keep in mind that in order to preserve such poetry people have to keep intact things like legal language and Rhythm. The Eddic Poems actually preserve a lot of important myths and its not likely these poems were altered during Christianization. The area of Norse myth that actually is subject to Christian influence is proabably the idea that Norse paganism in ancient times was a coherent system which it wasn’t. Norse myth actually varied from region to region and time and place. There is probably many myths that were never written down. We don’t really have a full picture of the Nordic belief system. Ritual to varied from region and time and place as evidence shows. Really the Nordic peoples weren’t actually all the same as we tend to think today. Another area of Christian influence in that is in the prose Edda is when Snorri Sturlsson identifies Odin is the all father which we don’t really find anywhere in our actual Norse sources his title all father actually might not mean all father it might mean something like all-order so really the idea of Odin being the all father is actually probably a Christian idea invented by snorri sturlsson. Odin seems to have a much darker character than what most people to think he wasn’t actually widely worshiped in ancient Scandinavia he was mainly worshiped by nobility so really I think trying to identify Odin as all-father probably doesn’t make my make much sense.

    How present are folkish heathens? Also, are there antiracist groups or resources within heathenry? I’m curious about the Norse pantheon but don’t want to affiliate with fascists.

    Can someone who is pagan worship Greek and Norse gods and goddess at the same time?

    Although Germanic or Nordic traditional beliefs might be defined as heathenry, my personal definition of godless heathenry is not feeling a need to worship anything. But my ancestry is Nordic and Germanic, so I have no objections to going with those beliefs.

      The magickal traditions are from the very first Europeans, even before Teutonic people.... so the answer is yes, there's a natural overlap, such as Norse Witchcraft which has a lot of Viking/Asatru aspects to it. Just like Hexerei has a lot of Heathen elements in it. The Goddess and Horned God had different names in different regions... the actual names are just semantics. There are very old overlapping paths.
