Horslips....my favourite unknown band in the history of prog/celtic folk/rock/pop music...The Irish Beatles/Jethro Tull....ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT!!!! RIP Johnny Fean....you were the best at everything...... lead guitar, lead vocals and composition.
Simply one of the best bands ever - have seen them many, many times - and they're the nicest guys you could ever wish to meet. Lot more Horslips to discover.
Wore out my Horslips ‘The Man Who Built America’ 8-track tooling around Eastern Washington/North Idaho in my 66 Mustang. Great times, great memories. Thanks for the reminder of a great band, a great album, and such a great period in human history thanks to these talented men, any many like them.
Best band for me! Saw them live many times in Ireland back in the day & more recently when they reformed in 2004. That was an awesome experience, one of the best live bands EVER! HORSLIPS 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Many criticise this era of Horslips as being too American, or too commercial. It's just different to their earlier stuff. But it's still fantastic music. Great songs, great playing, great band. I saw them about 20 times in the 70s.
‘Don’t fade’ , you said, at the end of “I’ll be Waiting” and its solo. Try this live version. czcams.com/video/icpqr81PDWs/video.html The second half has a 4 minute Johnny Fean guitar solo which starts below sea level, effortlessly ascends to above 40,000 feet, then glides to a frictionless touchdown leaving a rainbow in its wake!
Horslips was the voice of a generation! Biggest crowds, best fun, most talented band in Ireland in the early 70s. Johnny Fean is a legendary guitarist! Celtic based rock music, WTF!
First heard Horslips on KSAN in 1978 when I was Jrin High school and fell in love with this album. Now at 60 it still gives me goosebumps when play Lonelyness and Man Who Built America.
The earlier albums are much more in the Celtic Rock vein than this later effort which is a bit more mainstream rock, but excellent none the less. Many of their earlier recordings took traditional Irish or Scottish tunes (hence 'Celtic') and added rock-inspired energy. They were an amazing band live. Thanks for playing this album.
Horslips were arguably the original and finest exponents of Celtic Rock, beginning with their first album Happy to Meet Sorry to Part in 1972. The Tain (1973) successfully built upon and developed this genre, culminating in the masterpiece that is The Book of Invasions (1976).With the advent of Punk, like many established bands of the early 70s, they developed a more muscular, stripped down, concise style, showcased best on the albums, Aliens (1978) and Short Stories/Tall Tales (1979). The 1975 album Drive the Cold Winter Away is evidence of their collective acoustic musical talents.
What a nice flash from the past! They made it onto the radio here in Charlotte in the '70s, but I bet I haven't heard them since...although I probably did in Boston, where there is a much larger Celtic population. With their flutes they give off a bit of a Gryphon vibe. Amazon Music has some great songs by the band as well. Cheers!
Sorry said earlier to listen to the The Tain as part of a trilogy, I meant start with Book of Invasions, TMWSA then Aliens But listen to The Tain too of course!
Horslips were a superb band, and as you alluded to, a great live act. This album is from the back end of their career where they adopted a more 'mainstream' rock sound. If you get the chance, please check out their two best albums - The Tain and Book Of Invasions - those two are brilliant progressive folk albums where the Irish folk element is very much more to the front.
Never heard of them. What made them choose this band name 🤔😋? I don’t recognize the first song at all. The singer sounds like he was in many English early eighties bands. It’s happy joyful pop music; not bad at all. Not the genre of music I normally listen to. Would I buy it…no, but it’s nice to hear this once and awhile.
Supposedly their name came about because they had formed and couldn't decide on a name, the night before (or very close to) their first real gig, they were in a restaurant and talking about a name. One of them suggested "The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse" and a passerby remarked "Sounds more like the four poxmen of the horselypse. They didn't like "The Poxmen" so they decided to go with "Horselypse" but changed the spelling. Or so the tale goes.
Jiiiimmmmm! How are you? Your covid time is over I guess! This horse lips band goes well with the toy I saw this morning at work, a hand painted horse with a female rider, with reins and a saddle! I have to watch this again at home tonight to hear the lyrics. One can not play loud music in the cafeteria, even if it's from the magnificent Jim! LOL! It's good to see you again!
@@JimNewstead yes I know it's horslips, I was making a word play! And after watching the whole thing with my little earphones, I like it very much! I'm totally surprised!
Horslips are one of those bands that I've heard about but haven't heard much of. I think their earlier 70s albums are supposed to be better and this was very 1978 power-pop style (The first track sounded like The Members' "Sound of the Suburbs" to me - though that was a year later - and thereafter it was like Lindisfarne of a similar period). Could take it or leave it.
Haven't heard any Horslips in ages, they had a hit in Germany in 1973 - Dearg Doom .... wouldn't be able to name any other title. This 1978 Horslips doesn't sound very irish to me 🤔 could musically be everything ... by the way, I liked the "noise", when you started the LP, that's what old LPs sound like ... after a while of use 😆🤘
@@JimNewstead cheerio. I started goofing around with some review videos (german, with automated english sub-titles) and thought i should give the channel a 'proper' name.

Oh wow, this is just too much. Goosebumps and tears. The soundtrack of my youth. Sadly lead guitarist Johnny Fean was laid to rest last week. R.I.P.

Excellent Jim! Delighted to hear it through the ears of a first time listener.
Love this record. ❤
I discovered this band by accident when this album came out throughly loved it. The outro on"I'll be waiting" is one of my all time favorites
I’m pleased to have discovered it too!

Never heard of these guys before but thought I'd take a punt on having a listen with ya, glad I did, very enjoyable, looking forward to side 2!
Great to see a reaction to Horslips. I had all their albums at some point. The Táin one of my favourites.
Thanks for this 👍
I owned several Horslips albums back in the day. Not very familiar with this one but enjoyed it very much! Thank you, Jim!
I don’t own any apart from this! I was pleasantly surprised!
Loneliness, the first track, is one of my favourite songs! So is "I'll be waiting" 😅😅

a gem of an album. but that title track is such a winner.

You have to start somewhere!
I highly recommend The Book Of Invasions
This band and Klaatu are my two favorite "Hidden Gems" bands.
This was a nice surprise. There's nothing particularly unique on this record so far, but it's pleasant enough.
Nothing to set the world on fire but perfectly enjoyable in its own right!
You should have started with the Happy to Meet- Sorry to Part album. It much more represents what they are known for.
Maybe, but I don’t have that!
They definitely have more traditional Celtic-themed stuff -- this is very pop-friendly stuff compared to albums like "The Tain".

Always nice to be caught off guard with a tune you've not heard for a long time!
I would suggest Aliens...Celtic Tull. Lots of flute to be heard...
Sure the Boy Was Green...Excellent!
Seasoned Progressive Rocker
First listen for me.
I'm enjoying very much.

Ya' really have to listen to The Tain and Book of Invasions. Without the trad Irish influence they kinda' bore me.
