Democritus & Leucippus: The Atomists

The Atomists, Democritus & Leucippus, were two of the earliest philosophers to put forward a theory of atomism, which is the idea that everything is made up of incredibly tiny particles. This would turn out to be one of the most influential ideas from Greek philosophy in the history of science, find out all about it in today's video!

I mention in the beginning that Plato wasn't a fan of the Atomists, but accidentally forgot to go back and explain why. Essentially, Plato was a classical theist, believing that we are souls who know things thanks to the ultimately transcendent "form of the good", so you can see why he would disagree so much with a materialistic philosophy of the soul and the universe. Later on Epicureanism, which was heavily influenced by Atomism, would go on to become just another word for Hedonism in the Christian Era, continuing this trend of antagonism between idealism and materialism. As Nietzsche says, "Christianity is Platonism for the people". I'm going to expedite a video on Epicurus where we'll get more into the opposition between idealistic and materialistic philosophies, and we'll be getting into Plato around the same time, so you can look forward to a lot more on the subject coming soon!

Gratefully received information. My dad was a religious nut, as is alot of my culture. He tried brutally enforcing the existence of a christian diety onto my young brain through repetition and repeated beatings. Still, I resisted. This vid informs me that in the beginning man imagined a metaphysical being in his own image as being responsible natural phenomena. This information frees me. Thanks for letting me know that Democritus did far more than give us a suggested form of governance. I'm looking forward to more of your presentations.
