What it's like to fly the Boeing Starliner CST-100 Spaceship

- NASA recently announced who will be flying on the first commercial crew flights and both Boeing and SpaceX are racing to get their spaceships, their launch sites AND their spacesuits ready to return humans to space from US soil.
Boeing’s spaceship is the CST-100 Starliner, a capsule shaped spacecraft that can fly up to 7 astronauts to space. For NASA missions to the International Space Station, it will fly up to 4 astronauts at a time, filling the rest of the capsule with cargo.
The Starliner will launch on top of perhaps the most reliable rocket ever made. ULA’s Atlas V with 2 strap on solid rocket motors and 2 RL-10 upper stage engines. A configuration that an Atlas 5 has never actually flown before, but all the hardware has been flown many times throughout history.

@MEs61 just gonna say SpaceX has beat Boeing by a longshot, considering Boeing has been developing about 90 years longer.
MEs61 wel spacex is also making starship which goes further than orbit

The touch controlled orbital maneuvering on crew dragon honestly seems terrible compared to physical controls.

KSP without using SAS? My condolences... But really, this is awesomesause
He was playing RO without RO
There have been times where I've turned off the SAS and flown a craft myself because the SAS was too timid with the controls and you really need to shove the pitch to maximum early to keep the rocket stable on take off. I could never work out why that one listed so much XD

Everyday Astronaut Maybe I've missed something but I did see you say something about it.(That's why I am asking)
Okay, I've checked your Twitter and Facebook... so, will there be a video about that?
We all dream about it \о_о/
Waiting for the video...
Everyday Astronaut lol, got’em!!
When I went to Johnson Space Center in Houston a few years ago, there was such a heavy dose of emotion it was almost unbearable -- I had no clue one of the Shuttles was going to do a fly-by pigbacking on a 747, I still loathe having lost that video. There's just so much history at the place, seeing flown Mercury capsules, actual spacesuits, all sorts of space gear both real and mock-ups, that just drove me wild. And the look on my face was likely even nerdier and more overwhelmed than yours when I caressed that very same piece of Moon rock -- heck, I was touching a rock from the Moon! Watching this video, the aerial shot of the (humongous) Saturn V warehouse, the thrill of interacting with the new frontier in space tech, that all was very touching and relateable and took me back to that amazing day.
Thanks for making me cry for a good reason for a change.
Because of you and Scott Manley kids have dreams again :)
They should do a collab, or with Destin from SmarterEveryDay

Me watching the video in 2021: Panicked and hurried to check when this video was posted
We're going to have a lot of rocket scientists in our generation, thanks Tim!
Sure thing, pal. They're gonna smoke cheap grass and be on orbit immediately.
You know what that means, don't you, Tim? You've spent great time in the Boeing spacesuit and spacecraft, now it's time to knock at Elon's door 😉
He's already, didn't he ? ;D
Man i would love to see that happening!
Don't think he interacted with the hardware like here, more like a short visit to the Crew Dragon event.
yes that needs to happen he needs to hook up with elon and get in a dragon capsule
"Hey Elon, gimmi your SpaceX space suit and training stuff NOW"
I’ve been waiting for this one. THANK YOU FOR BRINGING SPACE DOWN TO MY PHONE!!
What about my phone :(
When you hear 'Boeing' and 'Starliner' together you don't picture a conical tin that looks like every single other launch vehicle.
I want to see something like 2001: A space oddysey to get this accolade
I used to work at JSC, a long time ago. I have been in the mockup facility many times. I can't believe the Space Shuttle simulator is still there. I would feel profoundly humiliated every time I saw it if I were still there.
The Starliner and the Crew Dragon, like all capsules, are space *craft*, not ships. We have had space ships in the past, and we will have them again one day, but, for the time being, space ships do not exist.
Tim, I love what you do, and I am so happy to see your enterprise (oh, that word!) growing in so many ways. It's just fantastic to see an ordinary, everyday guy find a way to participate in the renaissance of space flight. Of course, the day will come, in the not too distant future, when you will be able to buy a "ticket to ride" on an actual space ship. Given how well known and popular you are getting to be, I bet somebody offers you a free one when the time comes.
Keep up the good work.
I never thought that the capsule is as spacious as it is. Awesome video ^^
It was surprisingly roomy!
It will be a lot more _spacious_ after the launch
You have modern microelectronics to thank for that
@Everyday Astronaut Would it be as roomy with 7 astronauts in full suit in there?
It is like a soyus with an additional big storage room
According to subtitles the star liner can sent 700 astronauts at once
Cancer yes tru

Starliner LOL welcome home Bob and Doug!
Amazing video Tim! I can't believe Boeing let you 'fly' the Starliner! You're a big inspiration
Y’know, I’ve always loved space, and I have always wanted to be an astronaut. But even though I’ll probably never have the opportunity to actually be an astronaut, it’s so cool that you got to have this awesome experience, and that I got to witness it!
I would honestly love to see you actually get to go to space one day
You've achieved so much, Tim; I'm really happy for you. From making really informative videos, to appearing on TMRO, and now being invited by Boeing to try out the multimillion-dollar capsule. it was really great to watch you have so much fun at your time at Boeing. Keep up the great work.
Boeing 4.6 billion, SpaceX 2.6 billion and Boeing's needs 5 astronauts (1 extra to handle fire extinguisher duty, just on case of another fire)

You are the perfect guy for this program, you earned it with your knowledge and attitude! Congratulations Tim.
Are we getting a crew dragon version of this video? :D
Hey nice Starliner you got there
Hey Tim this video was awesome to watch. It really made my day, haven’t had internet for a while so I went to the library to watch. Thanks for making sweet content!!
As much as I dislike ads, I do appreciate that you put them during transition periods of the video!
Maybe this has been answered already I haven't read all (at the time I'm writing this) 207 comments...but I wonder why they're so secretive about the screen? ITAR maybe? Affraid another company will copy their control layout, or maybe just that it's not the final configuration? Either way. I sort of understand...but doesnt make it any less frustrating lol
Dang, this has some feels for me. I'm a Boeing Design Engineer out of the Huntsville Design Center and a lot of the ARS (air revitalization system) components under the decking and up that along the inner wall duct are my work. It's really great to see see it coming together now, especially the mass sim and abort test vehicles (minus the hiccup with that last one).
So happy for you Tim, best video ever! Thank you!
Dragon has touch screens, like a Tesla, and CST has MFDs, like a fighter. You can definitely see where each design has its roots. The way these vehicles have their own character is awesome. Though the CST could stand to look a *little* more scifi if you ask me. :P
You're an outstanding choice for communicating the brilliance of the Boeing space program
You should check out what spacex is doing
I wonder if details about the Starliner are available? Boeing's website is pretty sparse. Things like: what is its mass? How much cargo can it carry to the ISS? What wears out after 10 flights? Info like that would be really interesting.
Daniel Wisehart yea
You're cheeriness when it comes to space could probably make anyone's day
Your content is getting better each time!
This inspires me to dream about the future !
Tim, I love your incredible enthusiasm; you get so excited at things like this, which is contagious. I also wanted to thank you for your battling against "tribalism", which has really changed the way I view the modern space industry.
Keep up the good work!
Thank You for letting us see these amazing things!!!
So cool you get to experience real astronaut stuff. That is worth more than the money you make from this channel. You deserve it. Happy for you.
Tim's got "the right stuff!"
Was that built in the same century as the SPACEX dragon? On another note, I hope they don’t call it the star liner MAX...
lol shut up
Love seeing this level of success and access. Keep it going Tim, congrats.
i don't wanna sound peachy but you are like good ateverything, your music, your video editing and the fact that you get to experience things like this every week and day
Boeing should have flown you out of a new 777 and let you fly the approach. You know they can.. Great show, maybe your best ever!!
You mean a new 787. I flew on a 777 over 15 years ago
they are using meters, nice !
well yeah it's a scientific thing, most international things in america are used in metric.
Yay! Metric system is back!
@@matthewholt2174 Lockheed Martin still uses imperial for a lot of their aeronautics stuff 😡 . I'm glad to see that metric use is continuing to increase, however.

Wow, just wow! What an experience. Thanks for sharing.
What's it like to fly the Boeing Starliner? As of September 2023, nobody knows.
These space people definitely love the publicity Tim is getting them.
I couldn't stop smiling the whole time. I would die to get a chance to do that, thank you so much for sharing it with us, I almost felt like I was there putting on the suit and practicing egress and docking procedures.
That was amazing work! Well done!! So interesting. Keep bringing us all amazing content Tim!
"not listed", but in a recently updated playlist... :P
"not listed" basically prevents people making a search on Google to find the video [they can still "manually" open it if they know the full URL, like the one provided by playlists.
For people subscribed AND with the "notification bell" ON; there is a (less than 98%) chance that youtube will alert you via Chrome Browser [if you are loged in on your gmail account]; within the next 10 seconds your local "mirror" [nearest server of your state/country] gets a copy of the uploaded file.
I actually watched a SpaceX livestream replay that was unlisted because I turned on my notification bell for them. I can play the video directly from my notifications.
So having watched both launches. And Dragon had successfully returned American launch capabilities.
I'm curious about your thoughts on the different spacecrafts.
It seems (from a layman's perspective) that the Dragon is more progressive in its design and execution.
Plus liftoff of Falcon was ridiculous fast! Wasn't expecting that! Atlas launch felt much more traditional.
I'd be just like you Tim. Every flip of the switch, every cover open, every button press, I'd be grinning ear-to-ear the entire time. Being an astronaut is one of the biggest things that I've ever wanted to do. And it's not just the fact about going to space, it's also the process itself. I take joy in the simple things, and if a few simple button presses gets me to space, I'm all about it.
love the sneaky trying to film the screen 11.50

I can imagine the terror in the eyes of the crew of the Starliner in the actual flight everytime there is a strange sound or motion.
I love how exited you are about all of this ^^ also boings space suit is quite awesome
Really cool, but just docking would get boring after a few times. They should have thrown you into some kind of crisis simulation where you have to reorient a spinning capsule and not crash.

You said that the binoculars are important, if you said what their purpose is or how they are used I missed it. So what makes them important?
Well it's not really needed in the simulator, but when astronauts actually fly the thing, they need binoculars to check for little green aliens in the distant.
Green aliens? Rats, I prefer yellow :)
Great job Tim. Nice to see that we're definitely going back to space!
This is real Bucket List stuff Tim. Making me cry. I want to do that so much. You look mighty good flying that thing.

Pls no xd, 450$ penalty.
well, if you think about how much the LEM and CM control panels changed from the concepts to when Apollo4 flew, I sort of don't blame them as it's probably still a WIP as engineers tweak thing from Astronauts input from using the thing. So What you see today may not be exactly the same as what flies. It's still cool stuff.
