Absolutely one of the best space themed games out there. It’s just plain fun. Nothing is overly complicated and everyone can get into it relatively quickly.
Honestly loved the 'idea' of TI4 but hated the gameplay. This is the game I wanted TI4 to be.. Sorry, don't hate me. This just felt smoother and more focused on what it wanted to be. Easily one of my personal top 10 games.. it's fantastic.
exactly! I really couldn't have put it better myself...Agree with you 100%
I thought I wrote your comment until I looked at your name. You could be my twin. Agree wholeheartedly with your comments about TI4. The guy who won our game just did more objectives and we couldn’t stop him. Very anticlimactic. Eclipse to me is the far superior game.
Objectively eclipse has a better tech system, combat system and exploration system and offers ship design. TI4 is mostly politics and jockeying for points. I do like it but this game is far its superior..... Its even quicker to play.
I agree too > We didn't like TI4 because it only works with many players who have the STYLE of TI4 > Guys who love the speak and deal for hours! It's not our style! We are OK for a fast deal to exchange ambassadors but most of the time we prefer ACTION!
My wife and I loved the original Eclipse, and this second edition is such an improvement in components, art, set-up/tear-down time, balance, etc.... Absolutely excellent game.
Do you play it as a two player game often.
One of my groups favorite games. Just enough luck but not too much.
Eclipse is what Stellaris would love to be. :)
I've just ordered this, I love Stellaris but wanted the boardgame version and this seems like the closest 4x experience to that.
@@nicolajohnson1887 Stellaris tries to be similar to Eclipse. If you like the 4x concept you would love Eclipse I think, although we will have to see how Stellaris's Infinite Legacy works
I have a question for the experienced players.
Aren't 8 turns too few? (I am getting the game next week so I have never tried it)
I feel like in 8 turns you can prepare your ships, do some interesting researches but then you don't have the time to enjoy what you have built.
Am I wrong? It'still 2/3 hours so it's not like the game is short
You'll be taking 3-5 actions every turn depending on your economy (based on what I got form his how to play, I'm also waiting for my copy)
As we were learning the game, we made mistakes resulting in inefficient turns. This caused the game to feel to short. When you figure out what you're doing, 8 turns feels good. I've got no problem with 10 turns though. The feeling of scarcity and the looming end of the game puts a necessary pressure on players I think. You've got to find that sweet spot with your group.
@@facug21that feels like a low estimate, based on my games
Why now? Is another Kickstarter coming up for eclipse?
i believe eclipse was chosen by patreon backers of sheas show for him to do a series of videos on his channel (RTFM) and we figured that since he's going to be doing all that coverage, why not do a runthrough at the same time.
i think his audience wanted to seem him cover it because he's known as the "twilight imperium 4" guy and so they wanted to see his take on the "euro TI4" :)
@@rahdo rivals, I almost got excited about the possibility of third edition 😜
@@shrekage the secondth edition has just have some months of old, so no not a third one soon,
i'd really appreciate if experience is similar to first edition I have and not ever played since it is multiplayer only, I really thought that in this second version a solo or coop mode against some outer entities would be available ... and really sorry to not see that happen.
Does this means it's coming to the US soon?
you can subscribe to this thread from the publishers for updated details: boardgamegeek.com/thread/2644433/eclipse-2nd-dawn-galaxy-availability-2021 :)
Or you can just buy it from the manufacturer. I did, and had it shipped overseas to me here in US.
Yeah, I definitely do not like the dice combat. I would much rather have a more deterministic system - or at least something added instead of dice which lets you have more control/agency to the combat - such as you can spend X of such and such (coins, for example) resource in order to compensate for the dice. I am criticizing THE COMBAT SYSTEM ITSELF. I know what your response will be, that you can build up your ships to prepare the best you can for what could happen in combat, but that still doesn’t change the fact that dice are used - and roll to resolve is (imo) the most overused, boring mechanism out there.
it is interesting how nearly universally despised roll to move is, but roll to punch still gets a free pass :)
@@rahdo Roll to punch? What game uses that?
@@JJ_TheGreat the majority of combat focused games on the market. you roll dice to see how successful you are at punching something :)
@@rahdo Hehe, lol...
You made me think that I had typed "Roll to move", but that is why I typed "Roll to resolve" - as in "resolving" your actions.
The fact, that dice are overused is objectiveve. Because it is a simple and very old (time-tested) mechanic, that works. And because most people find it exciting. You subjectively find it boring. But none of this is connected to the question if dice rolls actually work in this game, if it is a good fit for what the game tries to acomplish. I would ask that question first, before I would start hating on dice rolls.
For myself, it reflects reality. Even the greatest warrior can sometimes slip and fall on his sword while fighting a midget. The one in a hundred game, where one small interceptor will destroy upgraded dreadnought, that is the one people will talk about for a while. And if you are the owner of that dreadnought you can accept that gracefully and spread that story or you can be a sore looser and never play that game again.
And about that "compensation" for the dice. Good preparation for the battle has always been the most important part about every battle.
Looks great buy _DEF_ not $200+ great.
Just bought it for $119, don't know why you would pay more for it...
