  • Anyone else notice the creepy captcha audios? I noticed this a while ago and have been meaning to make a video on it. The creepy captcha audios appear if you play the audio piece associated with Captchas. They normally don't hint at the actual captcha and just act as a creepy addition to stop bots.

Blind guy here, and I'm all too familiar with audio Captchas. The Facebook one is definitely not something I could pass, but all the other ones are perfectly audible to me and I can pick out the numbers distinctly from the background audio. Keep in mind that, when you get an audio option in a Captcha, the audio you get doesn't actually read out a distorted version of the text it displays. (Some older Captcha implementations might've, but nowadays, they almost certainly don't). It's a completely separate puzzle. With the Google one in particular, you are supposed to type out the clearly pronounced numbers and NOT the weird distorted background words. Hopefully that clears things up.
Still though... Yahoo... Man that was creepy.

I remember using an audio Captcha for the first time in the evening out of pure curiosity. Compared to what I had previously been listening to, it was ridiculously loud and consisted of a male text to speech sounding voice that was slowed down as well as backwards speech, backwards music, and eerie inaudible whispering, the last one being very similar to what you might hear in the soundtrack of a horror film. Needless to say, I'm never using an audio Captcha ever again.
And no, I never figured out what numbers or letters I was supposed to type in because all of the other sounds overpowered the very thing I was supposed to be listening for.
Hopefully these useless Captchas get fixed eventually, but, in the mean time, sound effects artists for horror film soundtracks should get their hands on that sweet non-copyrighted audio and use it to its full advantage.

The only things I can think of is solving the meaning of sentences that require an indepth knowledge of the world, like "The trophy cannot fit in the case because it is too big." but even then wording for that will be hard to force an answer of understanding. Having actual text or voice chats with real humans to confirm you exist, which is unfair to anxious people and would require a lot of people to be overworked. Or, the best answer, abolishing capitalism so there's no reason for people to want to do a lot of this bull with bots.

6:45 It's because Children's voices sit at a higher frequency which is harder for an AI to hear if a lower frequency that is about impossible for humans to hear playing in the background (Or vice-versa). For example, if you take an old phone and play let's say a 260HZ Frequency (A slightly flat Middle C or C4) And play a 2,600HZ Frequency (A perfect B7) Those frequencies won't blend since they are 35 Semitones apart and may sound a bit staticky or distorted. Therefore an AI won't be able to tell what is being said if you introduce a Third frequency. 2:03 not true, the audio captcha is different from the visual one, its just numbers. you can figure this out pretty quickly by just doing a bit of searching
but yeah they do sound creepy, I think its hard to create an audio that disallows bots from understanding the numbers being spoken without sounding creepy. the mixture of random noises plus numbers automatically is unnerving anyway. I do think though that if blind users cant pass the captchas then google should listen to their input and make adjustments.

the primary function of captchas is ai learning for their own ai, it just happens to also be usable as a security feature. It will have some that it knows the answer to, and it also has some that the machine can't verify, but decides the answer based on the most commonly entered answer. It gives them at random. Also, the audio captcha doesn’t have anything to do with the visual one, they're two separate puzzles

7:22 what you said is blatant nonsense. while yes thi scaptcha *may sound* like blatant nonsense, which for the most part it is, the numbers are actually more than audible once you know when they appear. after the ding-ding-ding it will start by saying the first number (in a weird voice) then a slightly quieter garbled noise of what appears to be made of the same speaker which appears to last approximately 1 second, then the next number and so on until after the last number the garbled noise lasts just long enough to trick if any people attempt to reverse engineer it to trip them into making their software think the noise is a number (i presume). In fact, what the audio said is 3383506.
