Basically for all you who don't understand what this comment means, they mean regularly you'd have let's say your fridge at a low of 30°f at all times, now the weather in Antarctica is way colder than 30°f so that would make the fridge "warmer" than the outside or even room temp
I have to imagine it's for the same reason Submarines get the best chefs in the Navy, because you are trapped in such an inhospitable place you want to have some level of comfort where you can find it and good food helps fill that need
The other day I was on a plane trip back from Tasmania. I sat next to a stranger and we talked a bit, he then told me he was coming back from Antarctica and he had been there for 6 months.

have to imagine it's kind of a treat for them as they probably only have it for a short while around when they get supply drops so in classic FOMO fashion you want to eat it when you have the chance, as opposed to us where it's just a quick trip to the store to pick up whatever fresh fruits/veggies we could want making them less desirable

@@tydshiin5783 Yeah, because in cold climates it isn't a desert associated with hot weather, so it's consumed about equally all year around. Also, in my experience, you crave more energy dense, fatty food when it's cold, which happens to be the case for ice cream.
They can easily store things like grain products, meat and dairy, but fruits and vegetables are much harder to store so they end up being highly sought after

Antarcticas total summertime population is usually about 4000 people, about a quarter of which is going to stay at mcmurdo. In Winter, it's population is still about 4 times the size of my hometown. Really, the biggest difference in amenities between mcmurdo station and a regular mid sized city is that it's internet connection is spotty due to having to rely on satellite rather than copper broadband. And that transportation to and from is a pain.

That's one thing I distinctly remember about being at McMurdo... The food was awesome! And being a Kiwi on an American base, Thanksgiving was a whole new level 🤯🤯🤯

Fishing in Antarctica would take more fuel and resources as well and be significantly more dangerous than just importing food. Don’t even have to expend energy to keep the frozen things frozen.

Meanwhile, Antarctica gets Waffles with chocolate and ice cream + cake and gets meat pie, peas, tofu, curry, and way more. This is more bull then one seeing red
It looked like such a sad lunch, though. Just a block of tofu with some spices thrown on, probably baked. Hoping they offer some more creatives dishes other days, because I know a lot of people struggle with variety when it comes to cooking vegan food.
