Dr. William Lipe is an archaeologist with expertise in the
North American Southwest, archaeological method and theory, and cultural
resource management. His Ph.D. (Yale 1966) was based on fieldwork in the
Glen Canyon area of southeastern Utah. Subsequent major field projects have
included work in the Cedar Mesa region of Utah and the Dolores region of
southwestern Colorado. Since the 1980s, he has collaborated with
archaeologists at the Crow Canyon Archaeological Center in Cortez, Colorado
on studies of Pueblo settlement patterns, community organization, and
socio-cultural change in the Northern San Juan region of Colorado and Utah

The more time I spend in the area, the more convinced I am that the dam was a huge mistake and what a tragedy it was to inundate one one of the greatest wonders of the natural world.
I spend a few weeks every year down there exploring away from the water. The re-emergence of the canyon and its wonders is something to behold.

P.S. I live in Moab and am an avid river runner. I’m good friends with Roy Webb and I just shared the link to this fine presentation with him. Once again, thank you very much for making this available via CZcams, it’s greatly appreciated!

I appreciate this video. Thank you 😊 I have lived in the Bullfrog Basin for almost 20 years. I have watched the lake steadily decline. Seeing this video makes me appreciate the historical low water levels today in 2022. I am thrilled to see areas like Hite Marina get back to its natural state. The biodiversity seems to be bouncing back. I can now imagine people living on/near these rivers. It has been just a vast empty landscape with a canyon full of water. Now that it is less than 25% full, it is much more beautiful to me. The sweeping fields of grass. The birds, bugs, and bees. It's amazing to watch Hite become what it was. 👏

Thankyou for your presentation, I was lucky enough to spend 3 or 4 weeks a year for 30 years on the lake exploring it's beauty. Many high school friends from upstate New York lived and worked at Wahweap Marina and also worked for the Park Service in the 70's, 80's and 90's. Before the dam a few thousand people got to enjoy that part of the river, after the dam millions of people got to enjoy cool blue water of Lake Powell it's sandy beaches and hidden coves next to towering rock formations. Dams don't work forever but I am grateful for the memories.

I went to HS in Moab and my dad was a Forest Ranger on the LaSalle Forest. In 1955 I was a sampler working with a geologist on top of Cummings Mesa that is in the background of a number of your photos. We spent 30 days up there living in a tent and scouring the lenses of the Morrison formation for any radioactivity. My employer, Rare Metals Corp. (div of El Paso Natural Gas) had a uranium mill in Tuba City and were looking for high grade to sweeten up the intake ore. I have slides from the air showing the key slots being cut into either side of the canyon for the dam. I am a certified airplane pilot and mechanic from Utah State and an industrial engineer from Cal Poly. The annual rainfall in Moab during the 50's was 8-11 inches. Now, thanks to Lake Powell it is around 20. Now there are birds and squirrels, greenery and millions of hard working people enjoying fishing, boating and scenic camping in an area that was the most dry, desolate, dusty, barren landscape I have seen.
10-12 thousand years ago there were hundreds of people living on top of Cummings mesa at 6000 feet and surrounded by water. Dr Cummings stripped the artifacts which are on display in Tucson. I think that what happened on the Columbia River and Lake Bonneville about the same time is similar to what happened on the Colorado River in the Glen Canyon area.

Whoa! What have I been missing out on, my heart is about to jump out of my chest, wonderful discoveries! What an astounding adventure for you Hombres. I'm was an explorer of the central Texas backcountry and have basically seen all the sites here destroyed to some major degree and hiking access to lands outlawed. So many archeological and spiritual sites dug up and paved over, heartbreaking.
What a wonderful gift you have given us in this lecture
It is a nightmare scenario that so many of those sites are now underwater, but better than bulldozed and paved over!
Thank you for this video and this channel!

Honesty:"We didn't do a very good job on Desert Archaic." When is a culture lost or only misplaced? After 25 years in the Glen/Wahweap/Paria Canyon area, I have realized that archeologists have missed the vast number of Archaic glyph sites here, and they are far more numerous than Pueblo or Basketmaker sites. Archaic lithics are so deep in some tributaries that BLM handed out gravel leases on them. Essentially, every Archaic artifact I've seen is made from dinosaur fossils, which constitute all of the area gravel sites, including the one for the dam's concrete. They are faint with age, but many glyphs stretch from canyon rim to floor, some well over 100 feet tall. These are not stick or simple geometric figures, but highly accurate representations. They appear to be 3,000-4,000 years old. Most common images: triangular faces that have been cut from a skull and worn as a mask (Schaafsma), human skulls, stacks of decapitated heads or heads hanging from poles, birds of prey, hunting scenes with birds of prey, buffalo, mountain lions and fish, of which some are caught in nets. They were collecting dinosaur skulls and putting artwork on them. Lithics are so deep, and giant glyphs so numerous, that some Desert Archaic were here in greater numbers at times than the Pueblo or Basketmaker. The natives depicted bear no resemblance to either Navajo or Pueblo people of the region today. While a vast number of glyph sites are under water, hundreds (probably thousands)of giant glyphs line the walls above the lake and far into Grand Staircase & Vermilion Cliffs, and as far as the Waterpocket Fold, San Rafael Reef and the Uinta Basin. Some of these are geoglyphs visible from the air.

It’s so sad why they did here. As someone from a younger generation, I first learned about the wonders of Glen Canyon from John McPhee’s “Encounters with the Archdruid”, about David Brower.

It's 2021 and the lake is at it's lowest level since they built the damm. Part of me says I hope it never fills again. But I live in Southern California and we're at the end of the line for water.

Trying to use outboards on a shallow river! What on Earth?
This is literally why New Zealander, Bill Hamilton, invented the jetboat in the 1950s: it will run in 3cm of water.

Really incredible how reliant such intelligent archeologist were and are on such a flawed and highly inaccurate pile of BS Radio Carbon Dating is. The absolutely absurd results gained from RCD are completely worthless. When a single item is tested using RCD and no 2 results are ever found to be even remotely alike and are offered with a plus minus of 500,000 years something should tell them that RCD as a theory is great but, as an actual result is complete garbage?
I would like to present archeology in general to examine just how EU theory is real and highly common sensible. It should be obvious that LITERALLY EVERYTHING is tied to ELECTRICAL ENERGY!!! So when we see the poles shift, the sun emit its Cyclical Nova event, these peoples were not scared of other Peubloans they prepared for the Cyclical Nova Extinction event. Their drawings were depicti9ns of sites seen in the sky as Electrical Energy discharge.
Time to wise up and see the obvious tie we and every living and nonliving thing we have ever encountered is tied electrically perhaps tye sooner we will not be diminished to zero perhaps many many more of us will survive.
