Your 3rd retrieve is what works for me, on the smallmouth near me. I was glad to hear you were doing this too, I thought I was weird. Or doing something wrong. Catching huge numbers like this! Like 15-20 bass in 4 hours. I use the ocho in GP, in one lake and morning dawn in the other. What I have noticed about my smallies, they want it moving. Even my top waters, any pause turns them away. A slow steady retrieve makes them commit. Great video!

Great advice . Most anglers were taught like you 1st. Said Matt to cast it out + let drop straight down to bottom + most fish hit on the fall like we were taught . + bring it up + fall again. Now 3 different ways to experiment with a ned rig . Excellent information.

Awesome video! It's funny cause I have tried similar techniques jig fishing and been successful, primarily cause jigs are my goto, but I never considered these techniques with the ned! I was one of those guys dragging it along! And there are so many times fishing these northern clear lakes where I could've been so much more successful going more finesse. Thanks for this Matt!

Great video thank for the different techniques! Ever try casting out and let sink to bottom and then reel in slack and then slowly raise rod tip up. On the way up Is when ill feel the bite and if nothing bites let it drop to the bottom, reel in slack and slowly raise rod tip again. I found this works really well for me.

Cool... I didnt know that the third retrieve gave a swimming action... neat. The first 2 is exactly the retrieves I use for deep fishing a tube 18-22 fow, bottom radius of the drop off for summer pattern inland lake largemouth. Great info as always, thanks for your vids and time.

I learned your 'returning the bail manually+ giving the line a tug' move from Hank Parker several decades ago. Used to have a mess of line every other day from my spinning reels. Now, we fish all week with no tangles! I'm certainly trying your different Ned Rig techniques this year too.👍

Spot on with your approach. I’ve been fishin the Ned for years, and the most productive retrieve I have found is 2 small pops, followed by a big 9 to 12 arm hop.

I FIRMLY believe that 90% of fisherman either do more things wrong than they'd like to admit or could do them much better
I base this on being honest about myself and literally 90% of the anglers I fished with as an adult over the last 40% years
Although I've never been in a single fishing competition I have traveled to over 10 states and Canada for the sole purpose of fishing and have done dule purpose vacations to 10 or 12 more states where I spent over 50% of the vacation just fishing.
I learned over the years few fisherman are as good as they think they are or wish they were
Content like yours Matt helps fisherman of all skill levels become better and for guys like me on the lower skills set much better

I start with a slow drag, then I move to the steady retrieve, and then I’ll move to just letting the river kind of bump it around and keeping a tight light. All work at different times.
I also like using the Missile Ned Bomb and Strike King Ned Cut’r because they have little tail like backsides. Nice profile.

I ditched spinning gear and had massive success with BFS setup this Fall on southern Wisconsin. It's not always about the retrieve but also the color. Keep an eye on what the bait fish look like and try and use a color that matches what they are eating.

Good video as usual on the retrieves. That said the " Ned " rig is nothing but a short jig worm but the fishing industry has hyped this u as some sort of revolutionary technique. I was throwing 3" Senko's, smallie Beavers and small ring worms on 1/16 oz. gopher mushroom heads years before the " Ned " rig became a thing along with a lot of anglers. That said it's now a popular way to fish which bums me out as it was a secret weapon.

I live in East Tennessee, we dimiki a lot in winter. I use it a lot in place of a dimiki. Shad colors or morning dawn!

The "inventor" of the ned rig says he basically never lets it hit bottom for his most productive retrieve, so you are correct when you say anglers that are just dragging it on the bottom are fishing it totally wrong. He also says if you can feel the bait when retrieving, the jighead is too heavy. From what I've seen, the Ned rig(when fished like it was intended) works much like how a weightless senko rig entices strikes with its gliding/fluttering fall, but you can fish it at a faster pace and have that gliding presentation in front of fish multiple times per retrieve instead of just on the initial fall.

Those Z Man baits should be super effective for flounder. The size is perfect and the stand up action should be awesome. A little scent added ought to be even better.
I have a hard time getting them straight in the jig heads compared to other plastics but they are tough.

In my pond which averages 15-25 feet, I find just hopping (popping) it off the bottom especially near ledges, is the most productive for largemouth. I do catch peacock bass on the slow retrieve 😉

I fully agree, you have to play with your presentation till you develop what they want. Been fishing finesse for 20+ years, and have always played with speed, tempo, and type of movements. Even bugguns will eat the little baits.
