    Every time I hear the intro music, I feel I should be enjoying the lecture with a glass of Bordeaux.

    Dr. Staloff's implicit irony is a wonderful complement to Dr. Sugrue's great sincerity - what a pair of courses!

      At first i didn't like staloff. He came off to me as pompous. But after listening to each lecture by him, he has become my favorite for content. If i could get his content delivered with sugrue's passion, it's over lol.

    "For prides criterion of prosperity is not what you've got yourself. But what other people haven't got"
    That is deeply profound. Phrasing it that way captures the essence of what pride really is.

      I do think that's it's good to be proud of your hard earned achievements and it's good to be proud of other people's hard earned achievements.

    I spent 15 years studying Church history. Never got around to reading More' Utopia , though alwasy planned. Have a copy somewhere. These lectures are reigniting my passion for history and philosophy and just learning in general.

    The inherent problem in free societies is the whole free-will part. Dont get me wrong its the only way to go for me, and i fought for everyone here to have it but it also means freedom to screw up, be lazy, do drugs, or to be a menace if you like. Thats the rub. Wish i had the answer.

    Dr. Darren rocks my world 😊
    1:51 “ I would urge that More’s utopia is the last great Christian synthesis”.
    That statement indicates, to me, that the Good Doctor Darren believes that the time of Christianity has come and gone. What do you think?
    I love his narrative, but More is boring imho…

    Utopias are cool and all. But how can you create the perfect society but not take into account that the earth will end and we need space travel and interplanetary colonisation to survive as a species?

    • @Tawahaj

      Authoritarian regimes typically do not think to those degrees as most of its energies goes into control of thought, movement, and actions of its populace. It’s why forced collective societies immediately devolve into hell on earth. irony would be that people escape earth only to colonize another planet and bring the same ideas and hell along with them 😂

    People won't work if there is no private property? Low standerd of living? That's bad. But capitalism has the same problem. Most people work full time and still have a low standerd of living.

    • @davemacnicol8404
      @davemacnicol8404 Před 9 měsíci +2

      Low standard of living compared to whom? Food, water, shelter, and socialization are the important things. But I get your point. If we could pair benevolence and capitalism together in the same concept we would be golden.
