Every time I hear the intro music, I feel I should be enjoying the lecture with a glass of Bordeaux.
Sitting on a big armchair with your tweed jacket on in front of a big open fire sucking on a pipe.
Dr. Staloff's implicit irony is a wonderful complement to Dr. Sugrue's great sincerity - what a pair of courses!
At first i didn't like staloff. He came off to me as pompous. But after listening to each lecture by him, he has become my favorite for content. If i could get his content delivered with sugrue's passion, it's over lol.

"For prides criterion of prosperity is not what you've got yourself. But what other people haven't got"
That is deeply profound. Phrasing it that way captures the essence of what pride really is.
I do think that's it's good to be proud of your hard earned achievements and it's good to be proud of other people's hard earned achievements.
@@BboyKeny; As long as those achievements aren't at the expense of others.

Wonderful insight.❤️
Prof. Sugrue spoke very highly of Dr. Darren Staloff in the Idea Store Podcast. As always, thank you !
These lectures have helped me necessary growth in understanding
How could one not love philosophy?
With the deepest appreciation and admiration for you and ProfessorSugre. .
Amazing how many Classical allusions in these works by More, Erasmus, Machiavelli, etc. Their education was superb. Entertaining lecture!
I don't understand half the shit but this is some of the best most fascinating material about philosophy on youtube.
Haha. Well said!
As long as it makes you think of things outside of your experience, that is the joy of philosophy.
I love this channel. This is a truly timeless lecture. Thank you for a being a beacon to the intellectual community.
I spent 15 years studying Church history. Never got around to reading More' Utopia , though alwasy planned. Have a copy somewhere. These lectures are reigniting my passion for history and philosophy and just learning in general.
What is your take on the excommunication of Arius?
This was absolutely fascinating.
Your name is hilarious lol
Thanks so much for uploading this treasure!
Very interesting, thanks for sharing
What a treat!
Absolument illuminating
Spot on.
Does Staloff have his own channel? He should
The inherent problem in free societies is the whole free-will part. Dont get me wrong its the only way to go for me, and i fought for everyone here to have it but it also means freedom to screw up, be lazy, do drugs, or to be a menace if you like. Thats the rub. Wish i had the answer.
Utopia should be required reading for business schools.
Dr. Darren rocks my world 😊
1:51 “ I would urge that More’s utopia is the last great Christian synthesis”.
That statement indicates, to me, that the Good Doctor Darren believes that the time of Christianity has come and gone. What do you think?
I love his narrative, but More is boring imho…
No laws?
What, this guy looks 21
Utopias are cool and all. But how can you create the perfect society but not take into account that the earth will end and we need space travel and interplanetary colonisation to survive as a species?
I am not sure the idea that the earth will end, was there in More's time.
Yes, whatever will you poor materialists do? Perhaps you could invent yourselves a savior? Or did Elon Musk fulfill your scriptures yet? 🤡
You might be interested in C.S. Lewis's Space Trilogy. Particularly the last third of the first book. It deals with that particular issue
Authoritarian regimes typically do not think to those degrees as most of its energies goes into control of thought, movement, and actions of its populace. It’s why forced collective societies immediately devolve into hell on earth. irony would be that people escape earth only to colonize another planet and bring the same ideas and hell along with them 😂
People won't work if there is no private property? Low standerd of living? That's bad. But capitalism has the same problem. Most people work full time and still have a low standerd of living.
Low standard of living compared to whom? Food, water, shelter, and socialization are the important things. But I get your point. If we could pair benevolence and capitalism together in the same concept we would be golden.
