  • Yeah, I know. I'm messy. You can see it plain and clear in my intro, which is almost enough for me to scrap these videos altogether because of the shame. But this is just how we are, and while we try to get better on this minimalism journey, I'm always discovering new things that allow us to focus more on LIFE, and less on STUFF.
    One of those things is our television, which we happily ditched 6 months ago after not having cable TV for 7 years! No more TV for us. :)

    I have a similar TV exorcism story to yours. It started with getting rid of cable because back when Netflix used to be a lot better, it was the only thing I used for entertainment when I had time to sit and watch something. So I cancelled cable but I kept the TV for streaming only. Then I started using smaller devices to watch things and the TV was only being used to stream as a social type of thing. Like Game of Thrones night or something like that. Then I started to notice that the furniture was situated around it like a shrine, so even when we weren’t watching anything, if there was a social circle on the furniture, the circle was made complete with this giant black plastic square. I also move apartments very frequently and live in NYC which makes it an inconvenient thing to keep hauling. During the TV’s fifth move I asked a guy from the moving company if he wanted it. He was like “are you serious?” I was like, “Yes. I’m super serious. It’s yours.” I’ve never missed it.

    TV is brain wash. I realized it when I had a overwhelming desire to buy Tide laundry detergent many years ago. My husband watches TV but I do not and leave the room when it is on. I hate the commercials and the repetition. So I do watch youtube videos but am working on reducing my time with that also. Been reading the Bible to relax , spend time with nature and do hobbies. It is really necessary to see what is important in life rather than be distracted and not realize life is draining away. I love your wonderful sense of humor and love your inspiring videos!

    Haven't had a TV for most of my life, never missed it! I sometimes watch TV when I'm staying in hotels or at friends' houses just for the fun of it, but I really dislike the constant stream of commercials and the way most living rooms are set up around the TV.

    I. Love. This. Every second and angle of this video, the message you bring to the minimalist world I feel is deeply needed. There is no perfect minimalist standard in the real world, only what minimalism is for the individual. The idea of no TV, while considered radical by many, is awesome. thank you for another great video.

    No TV. I live in faculty housing so all I have to do to borrow a TV is ask for it. I don’t plan on getting one after I move out either. Though I will say us no tv folks should not automatically feel great about our screen time. We can spend 10 hours a day just on our phone, computer, tablet etc.

    Our tv died on us 2 months ago. We did go get a projector but won’t be buying a tv again,we never used it much just to watch a movie every now and then. Theirs not much on T.V that’s appropriate for kids to even watch anymore so it’s been great not stressing about that.

    I never owned a tv but my parents did. Since I moved out I didn't have one around. It happend to be that neighter my flatmates nor my partners over the years had a tv. In my case it was a deliberate decision cause I tend to get all caught up. If I enjoy a show good, but most of the time a tv consumes all my attention regardless if I really enjoy watching or not. So in the end most times I just feld like it stole my time and I will never get it back....

    No TV here either. Our "entertainment center" is 4 tall bookcases pushed together, chock full of books in the living room. We play board games, read, garden, talk, listen to music, cook, bake, and just generally enjoy life together. I grew up in a home where the TV was always on in the background, and now in my own home, I value not having that. No distractions. No commercials. No questionable material for the kids. Nada. Plus, my kids aren't glued to screens... it's lovely!

    Thank you for this video. I just sold my TV and set up I had throughout high school, and it was rather hard to let go of it. I've played video games my entire life and now that I'm in my twenties I am aware now of how much time was wasted playing videogames or watching netflix. All that time could be spent mastering an art form or doing something that brings fulfillment into one's life, and I'm grateful now that I have the ambition to say enough is enough especially thanks to this video. Much love peace ☯️

    Once I moved out of my family's house almost 30 years ago, I never bought a tv. Not only did I not have the money for it, I saw it as not the most productive use of my time. I admit that in my early twenties I did go through a "withdrawal period", but was glad I didn't have a tv. As years have passed, I could afford a tv, but haven't bought one because I am definitely more productive without it. Of course now I can watch tv on my computer, which I do on occasion, there is no desire to buy a tv. Most people don''t know how I could survive without one, but people have survived for hundred of years without a tv, cell phone, computer, gps, cars, Amazon Prime, AC, etc.

    No TV in our house. Yay! We've been off TV for about 17 years now. It started when our little nephew was visiting. His parents wanted to postpone TV in his life as long as possible, so the 10 days they were visiting, we did all kinds of things together and really enjoyed it. It was so great, we never turned it on again. We do watch CZcams and Netflix or DVDs, but we choose the time, take breaks when we like and love not having commercials!!

    Like most living rooms in America, my living room used to be set-up so that the main focal point of the room was the TV. Last year I re-arranged my the living room so that TV is NOT the main focal point (it's sort of up in the corner of a wall, sitting on top of some bookshelves) and I've noticed that as a result, everyone in the house has been watching less and less TV and we have been treating movies & Netflix as more of an occasional treat... I LOVE it!! Makes the living room a much more peaceful place in the house.

  • @KarlyRich
    @KarlyRich Před 5 lety +1

    I'm a TV junkie, always have been and probably always will be. But we have a Toddler and her dad and I have often discussed our concerns for her and the amount of screen time she is already subjected to. Also, we almost never use our cable, opting for streaming services instead. Last fall my 4 year old threw a wooden toy and accidentally cracked the screen of our TV rendering it useless. We decided to take that as a sign to try and live without one. Instead of TV and movies we did family game nights and played a lot of candyland and mousetrap with the kiddo. After awhile I set up my laptop in the livingroom as an alternative when we did want to watch a TV show or movie, it was supposed to be an occasional special treat. Eventually the laptop was always 'on' just like our TV used to be and the kiddo was constantly messing with it, knocking it over and even spilling juice on the keyboard so we eventually said that something had to give or else she was going to break yet another electronic. Recently my boyfriend broke down and bought a used TV from a co-worker for $60 and so now we're back to having a TV in the livingroom and I gotta be honest, I kind of miss not having one. And **I'M** the TV junkie of the house, LOL! Oh also, I just found out our cable bill is going up $10 and considering the fact we almost never use cable I'm on the verge of cancelling and only having the internet. This video is kind of pushing me over the edge!
    PS That final cat sneeze at the very end was too funny

I wanted to remove it, but got a headache from my Mum saying you need a TV in the bedroom. I said I sleep in the bedroom not watch TV. So now I have a picture that is movable on the mount. Awww! Your cat”s sneezes are SO cute! I hope that she is ok though 😊 Great video. I have not had a tv for over 20yrs. I have so much more time to do other things, am more active, talk AND listen more, feel more at peace when alone and I can be more discerning about anything that I do want to watch. I prefer to learn something from whatever I do watch (hence watching CZcams 😁) and when I do want to watch something just to relax, I make an event of it and go to the cinema with my partner and/or friends. There appears to be so much vacuous cr** on tv that I would probably ‘zone out’ to and I have too much to do for that. If I hear of a programme I really would like to watch, there is always catch up tv etc. So, well done for gaining more real estate in your home that you can actually use 👍🏼👍🏼

    Hi Rachel! I moved with my daughter and son in law and granddaughter four years ago to Arizona. We didn’t know anyone here and I haven’t made too many friends. That’s why I keep my tv. I like watching the news and I love documentaries. I have many dvds of British movies( my favorite kinds of movies to watch). So I hate to admit it but tv and my phone are my outlets, I watch CZcams a lot also. I homeschool my granddaughter, I read and I have a very good relationship with my daughter, but I like having a tv. I understand your position, you guys are young, you have two children, you own a motel business, so there’s only so many hours in a day. You don’t want to waste them, watching TV. I get it. I’m so glad to see you again though Rachel. God bless, Jean from Arizona 🌴🌵🦂🦎☀️🏜

I find them such a waste of time to be honest, and they just bring constant ads, noise and useless and depressing information into my hone on a constant basis - no thanks! I haven't had a TV since moving out of my parents house about 10 years ago. And even before that I found, that I wasn't reall using it - although I had a TV in my room in my parents house. I would rather spent the time hanging out with friends, listening to music or reading. Now when I'm staying in a hotel that has a TV I do zap trough the channels and realise that there is nothing worth watching. But to be honest I do spend a lot of time on the internet as a lot of people do. Maybe the internet is slowly killing TV.

    We actually have THREE! LOL
    The one in our living room doesn't get used often, however we do love family movie nights and my son and his friends play games. With that, yes, most of the time it is just a big black hole on the wall. I like to cover it with pretty fabric to make it look more like artwork, hahaha.
    We do have a TV in our master bedroom, which I know a lot of people don't like a television in their bedroom, but I love hanging out in my bed. LOL. I usually watch to fall asleep.

    Forget about the tv, your cat is BEAUTIFUL! I have not had tv svc for so long I can't even remember the last tv show I watched. Probablt shortly after tv networks did a mandatory switch from analog to digital, forcing subscribers to cable service and the quality was awful, even right here in the Dallas area, not out in the boondocks! I think the last tv show I watched when I had tv svc was "Dharma and Greg"! I've enjoyed it again via CZcams. Season 1 Episode 20 "the cat's out of the bag" was the BEST EVER - writing, acting, all of it!

    We still have quite a few public channels in Greece, so no real need for a cable, for us at least, but we rarely turn the tv on, we're mostly using it just to watch downloaded series and documentaries. It's also a "small", old one and it was a gift, we probably wouldn't have bought one anyway.
    I do love background noise, especially when I'm cleaning, so I might turn it on, on Saturday mornings, but there just a bunch of crap, so I'll usually just turn on the pc after a couple of minutes. I guess it's a really old (bad) habit.

I am thinking of getting a small projector at some point to have it screen things on the wall but I am in no rush :)

    We have a TV we use for our Friday night family movie time. We were going through Little House on the Praire but now it's When Calls the Heart. I use it a lot of days for the kids while I'm making dinner. I would say my phone is much more of a distraction than my TV😒

    When I bought my TV after graduating college (2012) I used it with a $10 antenna. :)
    The thing that most people have that I got rid of was my couch! It came with the place and was comfy but huge for the space (a small cottage) and I rarely used it. The majority of my time with it was cleaning the cat hair. Now I have more floor space, my cat uses the pet bed, and I spend less time cleaning!

  • @dianebarnett4722
    @dianebarnett4722 Před 5 lety

    Your cat was cracking me up! We have a TV, but not cable. We only use it to watch movies, most of which are bought for 50 cents at the pawn shop. May I offer a suggestion? The typewriter on the three-legged table looks cool, but when your baby starts to grab things to pull herself up she might try to grab the table and pull that typewriter down on top of her sweet little self. I'm the grandma who raised three sons and always could see 10 ways they could hurt themselves. I let them play off by themselves in the woods, not a helicopter mom or anything, but still... Oh! As of today, I have watched every single one of your videos! Looking forward to your next one!

    I grew up without TV. It was fantastic. My parents stopped paying for cable when I was born (funny enough the company forgot to actually disconnect it which we found out by accident when I was a teenager). I didn't watch half of the things my peers watched and I don't feel like I missed out. I read way more books, made way more art, spent way more time outside than my friends. When I moved out I never bought a TV. Now I have a TV because my husband owned one when we moved in together and he wants to have it. I have this dream that one day he'll wake up and day "you know what, let's get rid of the TV". I hope to not have TV when we have kids.

    February 11, 2019 we had our satellite dish removed, so we have now been dishless a little over one month. This after decades of cable or dish connections. The dish was costing us $142.01 per month. What a waste of money and time! We did get firesticks for our TV's and I now watch my favorite CZcams channel's on them. Since the firestick works through our internet, it's not costing us anything extra! Win win. Also can watch Amazon Prime shows also. Love your channel and so happy for a new video.

    We went without cable for years and lived in a place with no real over the air reception so TV wasn't a thing. We have cable now because we moved and got a bundle with our internet which was cheaper than internet alone. (?) We have a TV, I don't watch it that often even with the cable...but we also use it as a dual monitor for the downstairs computer and occasionally for the video game console.

  • @razberrie
    @razberrie Před 5 lety

    Your cute sneezing cat! Ok so I have a TV but it's in storage. I live alone. Like you, I didn't have cable for years but it was because I didn't want to pay an arm and a leg for me to sit on my butt and not feel enriched by the experience. Over time I went from having the TV on a lot (to keep me company, never really watched any show needing deep concentration) to getting annoyed by its presence even when it was off.
    The vibe of my living room is different now, it's much more peaceful without the TV's imposing presence. Yes to more conversations and just the space to think too! Ultimately I feel like it's more restful for me to not have a TV at home and I never thought I'd say that. I don't have online subscriptions to streaming services to take the place of TV, just little old free CZcams. I listen to the radio more. I read a little bit more. I don't feel like I'm missing out on anything anymore. It's taken me years to get to this point. Love your videos!

    First I'll say how much I enjoy your videos! SO refreshing to have someone share the journey, with all its struggles and 'messiness', rather than watching videos produced by those who've already reached their minimalist destination. :) You are an inspiration for me! Re the TV issue, I do have one - just one - and am not considering decluttering that at this point. I never turn it on to watch TV shows, but do use it for watching DVDs either purchased (I have a collection of those still to be tackled in my decluttering journey - some of which I do watch over and over again with enough time between) or borrowed from the library. Yep, I know this is 'so last century' for all everyone who is into streaming media and far more tech-equipped than I am ... :) ... but that's the way it is for me on the TV thing.

    It's interesting to hear about your choice to go TV free! We recently let our Netflix expire and I was surprised to realize how much television I actually watched before bed - staying up late to catch one more episode. While our television isn't going anywhere, since we do use it for movie nights and some video gaming, I'm definitely enjoying more reading and a better night's sleep. Not missing Netflix at all.

    I got rid of my TV when I started my minimalism journey as well. Never really actually enjoyed watching Tv but I guess it’s just a thing everyone owns. I just had it on for some backround noise i thought i needed, but the physical object bothered me. Now it’s gone I’ve realized that the backround noise actually bothered the heck out of me. I was just so used to it bc ever since I was little the TV was always on. I really enjoy the silence now. My room looks much calmer as well and I can use this space for objects I really like looking at (my plants and candles etc)

    I got an new subscription for tv & internet and use it also with chromecast to watch your yt videos bigger. No commercials in between.

    We have a TV and we use Netflixs and will be adding Disney to it. But we took it out of our living room. It is upstairs in my husband's and I bedroom. In the evenings we will watch something with our kiddo and cuddle in bed together while we relax. Then after putting our son to be we have a few shows we enjoy as a couple and we may watch an episode or two. The only other time we use it is if someone is having a sick day or whatever. It works for us. We don't use it during the day and have more family time, but we still enjoy movies and a few shows together. So we made it more of a relaxing family things that is more attentional.

    I have lived with people who have tv's, but since I've been living on my own the past 4+ years I never bought a tv. I sometimes watch netflix on my computer, but mostly I watch youtube or listen to music. I read more (or try to), enjoy walking, go out to eat maybe a few times a month, and go to the movies once a month, or rent redbox. I love exploring and trying new things, so going without the tv expense leaves extra money to do fun things.

    Haven't had cable TV since I transferred to university for my BA and lived on campus in 2014. Since then, no cable for me. I'd only ever have cable when visiting my parents... and yeah, as someone else said, the constant commercials and how loud they can get is ridiculous. I don't miss it at all. I love my youtube, netflix, and whatever other websites I'm on to watch my shows/movies. :)

    I grew up in a family with a tv in the living room playing the free antennae channels 24 hours a day and the noise always bothered me, especially when it was bedtime. Later, as my siblings and I got older, there was a tv in every bedroom as well. Now that I live by myself, I do have a tv, but it is used about once a week, mostly when I want to watch one of my favorite movies (this weekend was How the Grinch Stole Christmas) or need the dopamine boost from playing a video game.
