- Using your Mac to run VM's is easy! There are a couple of things you need to know before you begin, but in this video, we cover those and then show you how you can even create a Mac VM inside of a Mac.
Creating a Windows Server 2022 Virtual Machine is a great way to start learning about Microsoft's latest Server release. This video, part of a series of videos on Virtualization, demonstrates the installation of Windows Server 2022 in Hyper-V.
This video is part of a complete course on virtualization that I'll be posting here on CZcams as well as on SkillShare.

i struggled for a week and was going to give up until i found this video, thank you so much.
Thanks! Your information is very useful and helped me.Please, make a video when information about the launch of widows sever on m1 chip appears
Extremely useful, right to the point, and very clearly explained. Greatly appreciated. Keep up the good content.
Thanks!
Hello! I can't seem to find an "Install MacOS" Option in my parallels control panel. The free Linux distros and windows 11 are there. Do you know why, and how I could do so? Thanks!
Hi. I currently have a licensed copy (ISO) of Windows 10 for x86. So what I learned from your video is I wouldn't be able to install or run this on an Mac M1 even with Parallel. So is my understanding correct that I either have to get Windows 10 or 11 for ARM then? Would my product license key for Windows 10 for x86 be transferrable? Thanks for your video or I would not have known this subtle nuance.
The M1 only supports the ARM based OS - so it does mean you will need to go with Windows 11. Fortunately, Microsoft does allow you to upgrade to 11 and Parallels will actually automate the download/install of Windows 11 for you. (It’s an option when you create a new VM)
If you are in school or working for a company using Microsoft products - you often have free licenses to many Microsoft products as well. If in school - ask to see if your school has a service called “Azure for Education” - it’s much more than just Azure - there is a large amount of software you can access for study/Learning
Hi, Its any chance to install Mojave into M1 pro Max?.... I need to install programs for 32bits....
Well done, Frank. TUVM..
Hi, thanks for the video! Is there a limit on how many Macs you can virtualise? Or is it all dependent on the resources you have? Like would I be able to have 4 or 6 virtual macs in a very powerful Mac Studio for instance?
It’s resource based - you can run multiple Virtual Machines on one host - I do this when I teach networking.
It’s also how you can create a Datacenter 😀
@@LearningandTechnology I believe there is also a license restriction. At least in the Venture license agreement, you may only run 2 additional instances of the OS.
How can I just quickly create and delete a temporary clean mac desktop to show others some app installation and configs process? A complete virtual system seems overkill
Can I run OS X 10.8 VM on M1 Pro Mac?
Thanks
The thing is we need a way to install the older Intel Mac OS as a virtual machine on a new ARM Mac, done of useful software is not updated to work pass Mavericks for example.

I talk about that very reason.
I have the huge issue that mac Mac OS 13 VM on Parallels Desktop 18 on my M1 Mac does not recognize any USB drives at all so I can't connect it to the time machine of another laptop. Any tips?
If you open the Parallels Desktop program, you should be able to direct the USB ports to either connect to the “host” or the “guest” OS. If you have a VM, then select it and the ports selected should be directed to the guest OS
Thanks for this! I have an M1 and wish to virtually run Yosemite so I can run specific legacy software. If I understand you correctly that is not possible but perhaps someone is working on it, is that right? Thanks again!
Unfortunately, Yosemite doesn’t run on the ARM chips - it’s x86/64 based. So, similar to Windows Server and such - it’s not able to be run as a Virtual Machine.
The ability to emulate x86 on the ARM system is a big challenge. I hope that it might be possible and happens, but I’m not sure if it will
Thank you Frank!
I can't see the Mac OS option in Parallels. Would anyone know what could be the problem?
neither, have you found a solution?
Can you install an older Mac OS than Monterey? I'd like to know before I buy Parallels? Thank you.
I haven’t attempted a very old version yet. The challenge is that Mac OS doesn’t have installation DVDs - the install is loaded on the system and/or you install from an Internet connection - which is tied to the machine (you get the version of the system)
So, your comment got me thinking… could I install a older version if I had the installation media? I think I have some very old Mac OS DVDs and this might be fun to try.
However, if you are talking about one of the past few versions of Mac OS - my thoughts are that this is not possible.
@@LearningandTechnology can you try running m1 Mac through external SSD or m.2 and then install older OS on propels?
@@hypebeatss the issue isn’t the storage - it’s the processor architecture. The M1 Silicon won’t run Intel instruction sets. At least not that I’m aware of… I don’t know if there’s an emulator - however, there is Rosetta 2 - and that has some possibilities…
It’s designed to run Intel Apps and I’m now going to try to see if I can run a VM hyper manager (but I suspect this won’t work)
VM window is not install usb printer driver.
Thanks for the video, I am surprised how logging into icloud worked just fine for you, all Parallels documentation point towards this feature not being available yet and I am unable to do so my self on my setup Please share your secret?
I wasn’t aware I did anything special - I’m not sure why I got lucky. I did upgrade to the very latest release.
Can mac m1 install windows 2016 with vmware? Thanks you!!!!
Unfortunately no. The M1 chip does not allow for Intel-based OS installs.
Man I need this M1 Chip so baaaad. I can’t wait to get one!!!
They are super cool 😀
@CarbonBlackBunny It’s sort of a return (in a way) to the past. We used to have a whole training thing when Macs ran on the RISC chips where the Intel (CISC chip) users would point to the speed and say they were “better” - but the shallow pipeline of the RISC chips actually performed better - until they didn’t.
Now - these new Apple chips are amazing! System on Chip is a very good bet for a huge number of users.
At some point - I’d love to try out various testing scenarios (especially around dedicated graphics and such) - but for now those graphics cards are hard to get - and I’d need new hardware - and my wife said no. Haha
why doesn't it detect a hard drive?
What about UTM?
VMs act as devices on your network - so all rules apply. You treat them as full systems
I have it and it seems very limitin.
prlctl list -a -f --json does not display the ip for example.
The bridge mode does not allow to specify the vlan.
I find little communication on this subject from you.
Virtual networking is a topic I am happy to do a video on. What happens is that there are different networking options (basically, you can select this in the configuration)
The nice thing about a tool like Parallels is that is very easy to set up for an average user that just wants to have Windows on their Mac, but you can also go very deep into the configuration and do more complex configuration.
It's also worth noting that Parallels offers a host of things besides just consumer virtualization options like Parallels Desktop. If you check out their website, you can see that they also offer more solutions for IT Departments looking to customize access and such.

@@LearningandTechnology Support was unable to answer me. Is it normal that ip_configured does not work with a virtualization of a mac m1? Your documentation mentions that there are limitations but it's not clear.
@@SimonFonteneau-xq7wm What mode are you in for networking?
Shared, Bridged, or Host-Only?
What version of Parallels are you using?
Desktop, Pro?
@@LearningandTechnology networking : Bridged version of Parallels: Desktop
@@SimonFonteneau-xq7wm Okay - and when you go to a command prompt and type:

Is there a way to install macOS virtual machine on M1 mac with VMware?
I know that VMWare Fusion was planning to update to allow this. I haven’t checked lately, but they were in Beta.
Just checked: looks like the latest version runs on M1. I’ll need to confirm it works (I like to make sure things work 😀)
@@LearningandTechnology I hope VMware can catch up with the progress of Parallels Desktop soon, ‘cause I don’t wanna pay a lot of money every year just for a function of macOS virtual machine 😂
@@fate_rebel I agree!
No ram...
You will need to use RAM - shared from the host.
FYI: As new owner 16" M1 Max pro, you cannot run iNTel operating systems... Funny my olde 2007 inTel Mac would run and G4 powerPC binary.... Parallels is 100% crap.. beyond crap.
It’s not the software - it’s the hardware. Parallels can’t run Intel chipset software because of the M1 Chip.
Parallels on the Intel Macs can run Intel based OS’ just fine.
