Gould vs mitchell vs pierce, damn thats crazy
Here's the lowdown from Colts world, presumably a lot of people in Anthony's orbit aren't familiar with it. First off, Chris Ballard of the Colts has built an excellent team and Shane Steichen is one of the best offensive minds in the NFL. The Colts are waaaaay under the national radar, and that is fine. So are the Beavers.
Second, it is nice for Anthony that he definitely has a roster spot waiting for him. He was drafted specifically as a returner, given the importance that kickoff returns are going to have in 2024 and presumably going forward with the new kickoff rules. He will be, at best, WR5, on the depth chart coming in - but he is Returner 1, with a bullet, and don't think that unimportant. It is testament to what the Colts are building that they understand the need for this enough to DRAFT for it, and they have made a masterful selection.
Now, saying that Gould is WR5 or WR6 might sound like he will never see action at wideout - and he might not this first year. But every year guys get hurt and opportunity will arise. Michael Pittman will obviously be one WR, a midrange possession type guy, and Josh Downs will be the slot receiver. The burner has been Alec Pierce, who was drafted a couple years ago and never really managed to demonstrate the ability to separate. GM Ballard tried to move up to get one of the "Big Three" wideouts in this draft; failing that, he listened to the board and was able not only to get his burner in the second round, AD Mitchell, but was able to flip picks with Carolina in the process - netting the pick used to take Anthony (and another 5th rounder).
Also on the roster is Ashton Dulin, who is technically WR5 and the current returner. Dulin has, so far, not demonstrated a superior ability in either role. There is a fairly high likelihood he will be cut or traded. We'll see how that goes, some things are unpredictable.
Anyway, I'm pleased as punch that there will be a Beaver in blue-and-white.
P.S. Indianapolis has an excellent reputation as a nice place to live.
Just an FYI Dulin's spot on the team is a guarantee (if he is healthy) as he was a top 5 Gunner in the NFL before the ACL injury. Anthony is going to be an amazing returner for us, and I would be sure to say he plays on offense in special sets to get him the ball in the open field. Colts are dangerous if the D can hold and get pressure. Top 5 Offense in the NFL incoming.
