- Introduction -
Friday the 13th for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) is an action-adventure video game based on the popular horror film franchise. Players take on the role of camp counselors trying to survive the night at Camp Crystal Lake while being hunted by Jason Voorhees.
The game features a top-down perspective, allowing players to explore the campgrounds, cabins, and surrounding areas. Players can arm themselves with weapons like knives, rocks, and torches to defend against Jason's attacks. The game also features a unique "Fear Meter" that increases as players encounter Jason or witness gruesome events.
The music and sound effects for Friday the 13th were composed by Hirohiko Takayama, a Japanese composer known for his work on various video game soundtracks like Shin Megami Tensei and the Xenosaga series.
- About the composer -
Hirohiko Takayama is a Japanese composer and sound designer. He was born on May 5, 1966 in Tokyo, Japan.
Takayama was hired by Atlus as a freelance composer to work on the soundtracks to several of their video games. Some of which are known in the video game community such as Friday the 13th, The Karate Kid and Xexyz. He also had the honor of composing the only two games that used all eight channels in Namco's Japan-exclusive N163 chip for the Famicom (King of Kings and Erika to Satoru no Yume Bouken). Later, Takayama started composing music for HAL Laboratory's Game Boy games, likely still as a freelancer. He had also worked with Kenji Eno's EIM on games like Panic Restaurant.
In 1998, he founded AON-DO where people could listen to samples of his latest work and buy them. Hiro also teaches at a college in Japan and writes books on music composing, software, etc. He currently runs his own website and sells his current music on iTunes.
While Takayama hasn't composed video game music in a long time, he says he would like to do it again sometime.
