I tend to introduce a lot of people to Sythwave because most people are sleeping on it still even though it's been around for a minute now. Song of the Year, Music Video of the Year, a true hit and work of art
100%
He says "Ancient of Days" in the lyrics. A really amazing painting by William Blake who also painted the famous Red Dragon.
the lyrics to me always felt like a pharoah or a king feeling remorseful for living so greedily and violently. it's almost like he was reborn in modern day into riches, yet he lived the same way he did all those centuries ago, and now he is truly punished for it.
Was not expecting to se 16 Horsepower as I searched that name. I usually don't like heavy religious themes but the melancholy, anxiety and bleak view of humanity in their songs managed to supercede that. Also their cover of Bad Moon Rising is something to experience

@@lukaskubinec9608 I like to think it's a king telling of a great victory over his enemies. Like the inscription by Ramses 111 about his triumph over sea people in the bronze age collapse. He bragged hard and meant it even though it was a pyrrhic victory. Meaning that he sure did crush his enemies, but they had destroyed so much of the surrounding civilization Egypt fate was sealed. I highly recommended looking into the bronze age collapse, we don't even know who exactly these sea people were, but they were enough to cause the equivalent of an apocalypse.
@@darksepheroth4627 that's very interesting interpretation and I think most likely very accurate, thank you for sharing that. Also the UFO spaceship wreck could symbolize that like Ramses annihilated sea people same will happen to us too? We people always think we are supreme until something/someone more advanced shows us that we are just still animals although possible of rational thinking and emotions.
Fantastic collaboration! Love David Eugene Edwards' massive tribal drums and how he fuses Native American, Ancient Egyptian & Christian symbolism in his lyrics!!! Great work of art gentlemen! 🖤🙏🖤
YES its a perfect collab. Its genius
Let's spend 2 years on deciphering this? My take:
First off, the video definitely alludes to Ozymandias (2:30): a tale of how all great things find their end in a passage of time. We see the collapse of the past Gods (3:20), fall of the 'modern' civilization and the giant alien invaders overtaking the realm of all life (3:55) before their inevitable decay with all things (0:50). And yet, we see old Gods overseeing the events as there is no time (2:36-2:48, 3:22) - to Gods there is no time, so there are no "old" Gods - we just forget about them which opens the door for corruption of the soul - this is the reason why we see the church and the standing God untouched in every timeline in the video.
The "alien beasts" in my opinion represent the triumph of corruption. We see in the video individuals being possessed and torn apart by the black goo, which is essentially corruption of the soul. But as we know it doesn't stop there and unless stopped it will continue to grow larger and larger until it walks around and destroys the whole city, the whole civilization. Seen this in China, been there in USSR, almost certainly happens somewhere as we speak.
I also love the touch that these big all-destroying aliens still die in the end, because you need to have a society to live even if your only purpose is to make it worse. So at some point after all the power grab there will be nothing left.
(2:40) The crown is the Jewel. The Jewel in a crown typically represents some kind of enlightenment (like a nimbus) and self-awareness/self-consciousness. Egyptian God Horus, which is present in the lyrics and video, is an embodiment of the Jewel in more contemporary religions such as Christianity. The jewel is more specifically the Third Eye or the Eye of the Horus, such as the eye on top of the pyramid it historically represents the act of 'Seeing things for what they are' or better put - the opposite of wishful blindness.
We see the glowing eye on the bird here in the video as an another allusion to the crown or God (Horus, the Eye). The bird departs as the Gods 'die' at 3:28. This might be a link to the famous Nietzschean "God is Dead" notion that packs in itself a story of the fall of all humanity once they lose their Gods. And indeed, in the video, immediately after we see the great fall and a variety of monsters overtaking the Humankind. Most notably we see the corrupted human (1:55) in a match-cut superimposed on the monster bug (3:58).
The black scenes are the 'corruption' scenes and we see how it grows from within a person. We see how the darkness overtakes and then devours the person (1:53) and the small cockroaches (2:18) grow up to the size of a skyscraper, ultimately devouring everything in the end (3:58).
In my opinion this is one of the most profound works I've seen. If you have something to add, please do this.
I see it too Etofok. I came to comments to find someone like you to see if we read the same things.
The old gods are still, I caught that too and it's true. Old truths stand. The world of the dead, our world, you saw the glimpse of the city, the death road, oh yes.
The tree branches are snakes. In Bible you are a branch in a tree of the living, but in the land of the dead trees become snakes.
Woman from whose mouth snakes come out is hydra, source of all the lies. You cut one, more comes.
I think your idea of Nietzsche is what is shown. Mankind kills it's saviour and the monsters come. Not all the world has abandoned the hope tho. But without God, death it is. Without hope, the monsters will come through us.
Eagle, the shaman, the eye that sees far. These are the shamans of our time, artists. They ride the wave of being and sence the possibilities first.
Tell me Etofok... Have you seen "land"? I have seen glimbses of light and it's getting brighter. But you know how it is, the light reaches the last to the darkest pits of being. First the places where love still is are lightened, then people around them, then around them... Until.
I just today read the psalm 18. When sin arises, arises the hate of God. And the earth will shake and the waters of the deep will be seen. This is the darkness of us, the deep ends of us, the monsters. And our world will shake. The enemy is us. Our sword should be to our chest.
But you know, we were bad, we lied, we cheated and broke hearts, we left our families, we hated our families, we stole and killed. We hated God and gave our children only death - welcome child to this world I made. Why did you made me? The sons will arise agains there fathers.
If you can see harm from far above, wouldn't you try to stop it? Play an honest game, make it better, make you better, the world will follow. Kill all the monsters of you with no mercy - the hate of a man is not God's will. Become stronger, become solid.
Say Etofok...are you seeing what I'm seeing?
I appreciate this song even more now
i could not have put it better myself. this thesis makes complete sense, and inspires me to dig further
I've been listening and watching this since it came out, almost nonstop.
I think the usage of the words Horus, Set and Serekh are extremely important. And I think the music video itself, takes place in a present time (post apocalypse), and a past time (cyberpunk future city).
Horus and Set are the prominent figures throughout. Seemingly being the only 2 gods remaining in a blasted worn out world. Having standing statues and physical embodiment's as a falcon and jackal can be seen. The only other creatures, lizards ,scorpions and roaches. Horus is seen carrying eggs elsewhere, and being present above the chapel (one of the only buildings we see survive, from cyberpunk past, to present time apocalypse). In my mind, representing Horus as the goodness of whatever is left, having taken the life of the egg, and whatever hope was left in the chapel, and flying onward, into the next horizon to find a place untouched by whatever those decedents of humankind are, those black tar creatures. Segue into Set, who we see utterly ripping and tearing one of the "black tar" creatures to sunder. Completely disregarding any preordained religious sense of Set "judging the heart by the weight of a feather". On the contrary, there are no hearts among the black tar creatures. Rip and tear, as Set always does. I believe it is an image of our most evil of selves. As we exist, as countries, sociologically, being reliant on fossil fuels. The the things we do, as people, to get and make oil, the things it does the world around us, deprives the soul of our existence beyond the "measuring" of a feather.
Serekh is, as quoted by Wikipedia, "..the earliest convention used to set apart the royal name in ancient Egyptian iconography..". We see the image of a crown in the streets, and is immediately transposed to the modern day, rusted and worn beyond repair, not a single image of its former egotistical glory remains. A broken Serekh. Shattered by hubris, greed, ignorance, bloated beyond sustainable measures, thrones for pompous nobles, as far as the eye can see. The transitional image of the cross on the church, to being upside down in the puddle next to the crown.
I believe the part of the pretext of this, is the image of the serpents growing out of the ground in the beginning. As if, the nutrient of the soil only provide for the snake and the tree, setting the stage of the typical "adam and eve and the snake in the tree". But now its literal serpents growing out, as trees. Implying that the land has been tainted beyond comprehension.
I believe the giant skulls were also specifically representing the death of the world around us. Again, speaking in terms of sociological impact in reference to how we as humans exist, cows and herd animals are how we feed our people. We bloat them and change them.. doing whatever it "takes", to get it. Just as we do with oil. I think their skulls stood for all the creatures we treat in such fashions. Nothing larger than a small lizard can survive in that kind of desert.
To be honest, the giant teddy bear screams the representation of a future generation. But not for life of the wild, as in my mind, as is represented by Horus, but rather whatever Human generations are left picking through the tech of the old world. Whatever strain of humans are left picking through the decaying pieces, they amount to nothing but sitting in the sand. Watching the rust blow by in the wind in a dying world like a worn out teddy bear with no child like spark that comes from living in a world that has life and meaning.
We see the image of a space craft, in my mind, a physical actor for the cataclysm, the triggering event that caused everything to spiral out of control. Humans losing all sense of moral internal identity, economy falling as people refuse to change the gears of the system. Bureaucracy of state and influence clogging the pipelines and making it all come to a halt, while the people who had the ability to grab and run, did so.
In the last few scenes I think we bare witness to the end times. The corruption of the land bursting forth like "claws" grasping up into the land like the hands of the dead unleashed by Set. The cockroach and black tar creatures stampeding their way through the dying city-scape. Earlier, we also see the roaches closing in on church (the intent of their deeds displayed by the quick stills of scorpion tails around the church), which I think might display the curse of the dying industrial world, and its constant act to infest whatever sense of hope is left in the "church", "faith", "humanity". Which, is quickly dispelled by Horus, but at the end of the video, flys off to new lands, knowing this one is lost like so many others. Set being the darker side of whatever life is left, being driven to desperate ends, yet cleansing the world of our ancestors failures.
Still deciphering.. probably will be deciphering for months. Fucking stellar song and story.

My god... Every thing is perfect here.
Discovered David Eugene Edwards through this, can't get enough of this guy these days. Can't believe he isn't more well known, dude is incredible.
When I saw the announcement that Carpenter Brut was working with Edwards, I wondered how that was going to sound. And it sounds magisterial as expected.
the first day this came out I was disappointed except for the visuals, "what is this 1400 ancient music" , then after a week, this song grew on me, i cant forget it, its a mixture of acoustic instruments with Carpenter brut's unique synth, and the melody doesn't exist anywhere else but CB, gives me the chills. Forgive me for doubting this amazing artist.
Your first impressions were correct, imo. The visual effects seem strangely mismatched. With the motifs of the giant insects and Egyptian monuments you would expect something more spectacular/grandiose/intense and oriental sounding whereas this sounds more like a B track on a Mumford and sons album. Which is unfortunate, because the visual effects are phenomenal.
It doesn’t even sound distinctively like carpenter brut if we compare to some of his other songs. It definitely doesn’t sound like a synthwave song. I can appreciate if Carpenter wants to be original rather than restrict himself to a particular genre or style of music, but I think that should come later in your music career once you’ve established a signature. Personally I want to see more synthwave cinematic fusions in the vein of his other songs. I don’t think I’d be such a harsh critic if Turbo Killer wasn’t such a visuo-audial masterpiece. Thats the problem with setting such high standards I suppose.
That being said, I’d always prefer that they focus on the process of creating art rather than trying to meet audience expectations. Its always interesting when something misses the mark so we can appreciate it from a different angle. It gives the critics something to chew on.
I thought the visuals were spot on, like a modern day apocalypse caused by ancient gods
all hail the coming of the brut

The church cross reflection in the puddle was cool subtle effect, and the raven’s eye. I hope the director and David make a habit of creating art together.
