I was born and raised in Southington. Your description sounds pretty accurate. My last visit was in 2017. I left for Military Service in 1981 and ended up in North East Florida. I Still have family there and like to time my visits in the fall and catch the leaves peaking for some great motorcycling In the Litchfield Hills and along the Housatonic River. It has changed a lot since I left. Southington was covered with a lot of farmland back in the day. Cost of living and Taxes would put me in the poor house if I returned.

I'm shocked, but not surprised you didn't mention our living expenses and rent rates. I live in southern CT, the rent I pay for a Studio Apartment adding it up annually, I can get a 4 bedroom house in the South, Let that sink in

I do talk about cost of living in another video. It’s vastly different depending on why town you live in. I live and work in central CT and an average rent for a 2 bedroom apartment here in Southington is around $1,200/month. It is definitely more expensive here than in the south. The CT shoreline has a slightly different seasonal profile. Our summers aren't quite as hot, and winters are not as cold and snowy as upstate because our climate is moderated a lot by our proximity to the ocean. And our autumns are long and wonderfully warm. We play golf right into November most years. But, man, we pay for it in spring. It's cold, wet, cloudy, dark, and seemingly unending. It starts in March and lasts until the middle to end of May. Really warm weather doesn't come until really June most years.

Iowan here. Hearing your description of the worst weather in Connecticut was adorable. I have 3 feet of snow in my driveway annually. I literally have to divide my driveway in half longways to make room to put snow. The upside of having crap weather all the time is the infrastructure plans for it. We have plenty of room on the side of roads for snow and plenty of free water fountains for the OMG hot summers. I am looking forward to moving to CT. We are going there because it is a nice balance of stable weather and pay for my line of work. My partner has a medical condition that means migraines every time the weather changes. Iowa is one of the worst places to live with that condition. CT is one of the best in the US.

And the springs & falls are amazing 🍁🌼 that takes up six months . Winters and summers are tolerable. We have the shorline 🌊 30 minutes FROM me and in winter places for sking. (but who doesn't love a 'snowed in' day with hot chocolate & movies ! ) Older now and thinking of retiring as this state isn't great for seniors (taxes, col, and things for seniors(now lower income) to do are main concerns for me) but all in all a great little state for growing children, flowers, and did I mention the food ! Great ethnic food around every corner ! AND you should of mentioned we have "YOGA WITH GOATS" 🐐 who else can say that ! TFS

I recently moved OUT OF Connecticut and I am so happy I did. I appreciate your video and no disrespect please but maybe hear another side.
I was paying "Property tax" on my vehicles (which I never heard of until moving to CT). This tax alone is outrageous and a money grab. EVERY YEAR you must pay the mill rate on all of your vehicles. What!? The State I moved does not have this tax.
I was paying $18,000 in real property taxes on 3/4 acre! Now I pay less than 10% of that on over 40 acres, a house, an arena and barn plus mountain views.
CT taxes your pension AND Social Security.
The people in CT are the rudest I have ever encountered. Mind you I lived in California, Arizona, Florida and Pennsylvania. Nowhere are they more rude than CT. Between the driving habits down to the neighborhood. Most people in CT do not want to be there, but they are rather "Stuck" there. My clients told me this all the time. "I would move out but I have family here" was what I heard a lot.
The 9 years I spent in CT were long, cold and not the of best times. The Long Winters combined with traffic and hot steamy summers while living on a polluted lake and paying a "View tax" are only a memory now....(thank God).
I will not be sad if I ever cross the CT State line again in my lifetime. Matter of fact I prefer that.

Taxes, yes expensive but we don’t pay tolls and that gets expensive if you drive for work every day. I also think it’s easy to travel abroad as mayor airports are not too far to get to. One think that I don’t like is the cold beach water but the whole north east has this issue. I have never felt unsafe in CT (except @ night in certain areas of Bridgeport /New Haven), I think is one of the safest states in the USA. And our gorgeous ocean views are a must see.

I was born and raised in Southington. Back in the day it was awesome. Small town where everyone knew each other. Not the case now. So sad. All the beautiful fields and pastures have given way to apartments and condos and overly priced homes which are so expensive. But Southington does have a great school system. Probably the only thing that hasn't changed. And we have an extremely low crime rate. However Connecticut has the highest taxes in the country running neck and neck with California. So u better have some bucks if u want to move here. As far as our seasons go.When I was young we definitely had true 4 seasons. Now it seems to be 4 months of nice weather and 8 months of cold. Hey. I'm just being honest. Oh yeah so we get leaves changing colors but blink and it's gone. Plus it's too cold to enjoy it's brief beauty. Sorry but as I said I was born and raised here and I have to be honest. Think twice before coming here and I so hate to say that. But trust I don't lie. It is what it is. I keep seeing, "Connecticut is boring, nothing to do", really? What do you want to do? We have a lot of small and medium theaters that are really intimate venues in Oakdale Theater in Wallingford, Ridgefield Playhouse, Infinity Hall in Norfolk, Harbor Yard in Bridgeport, Eugene O'Neil Theater in New London, and the historic Goodspeed Opera House in East Haddam. I've seen some classic rockers and musicians, to off Broadway productions. We have two ski areas at Mowhawlk Mt in Cornwall, and Mt Southington Ski Area in Plantsville. In the summer we have three major state beaches, as well as many state parks for hiking and biking, Lake Compounce Amusement Park in Bristol, aquarium and sea life exhibits in Norwalk and Mystic, a multitude of museums across the state especially Peabody Museum at Yale University and the Mystic Seaport Museum in Old Mystic, and Hartford Science Center. We have four auto racing tracks, tubing on the Farmington River, the Connecticut wine trail, rodeos, country fairs, arts festivals. The list can go on, so why is CT boring?
That being said, I agree that taxes and cost of living are the biggest detractors and I might add politics contributes to a negative image of the state. It usually ranks near the bottom of "Good places to Retire" lists.

If people are saying Connecticut is boring it’s probably because it is, compared to other places. Connecticut is like a sleepy state, even less entertaining than a retirement state. And if you don’t have great transportation or aren’t willing to drive to all corners of the state, you probably won’t have access to most of the places you Mentioned. You can entertain yourself in Connecticut, but you have to put the work in to make it happen. Especially younger people can definitely find more entertaining activity somewhere else, much easier.

Hi John, thank you for watching. I definitely understand, my least favorite parts of CT are the cold and high taxes as well. I’d be happy with a little snow ❄️ to wake up to on Christmas morning and then back to warm weather.

If you decide to leave and need help with either selling here or buying in your new state, I’m happy to help. I have an amazing network of agents throughout the country and beyond.

You skipped right over the enormous property taxes we pay. We own a small cape with less than a 1/4 acre and we pay almost $6000.00 a year for property taxes alone. We just bought 25 acres down south, $350 a year for 25 acres!!! So tired of being financially raped my entire life for greedy politicians to live like kings. Can't wait to get the h... Out of here. Of course you don't mention this in your videos because your a real estate agent and want to sell houses. Buyer beware, do your homework people.

Yes, property taxes are much higher here than in the south. It’s also kind of crazy how they vary so much here from town to town. Even two towns right next to each other can have very different mill rates.

Lived in Southington for 13 years. Hated it. Not much to do, people not that friendly. The taxes in the state are through the roof, everything is more expensive!! Beaches? Only the Long Island Sound, NOT the ocean like some people think. And the car tax - ridiculous. Yes traffic on 95 and 91 is ridiculous. There is absolutely nothing to like about CT and it's not even a pretty state. As far as sports teams -- most people follow the Yankees! Not the Red Sox and definitely not the Mets! No, we are all NOT UCONN fans. I was sick of hearing about them!! This state has nothing going for it. And casinos -- meh!! And pizza is non-existent. Pepe's is the worse pizza I've ever had.
