I feel like Capcom has been on a 10 year quest to see how bad they can make Gief before his fans finally lose loyalty.
Remove greenhand, nerf spd startup, nerf spd recovery, nerf spd invincibility, nerf all oki, nerf bear grab, nerf air grab, remove combo into super, nerf air headbutt stun, nerf lariat cross up hitbox, remove quick lariat, increase hp hurtbox, add useless tundra storm, add vshift. Its absurd for one character to be nerfed so hard, but we still loyal.
The lesson here is to learn your Ken matchup, because it doesn't matter what your skill level is, it WILL be your main threat.

If I remember correctly the iron/beginning ranks Luke numbers are inflated because the game by default counts Luke as your preferred Rank character
But you have to play like 5 games or whatever before you get a rank

An interesting thing I noticed is that if you switch from "All" to "Classic" Luke drops a bunch. There are a lot of Modern Lukes in there. He's the top Modern character (by a pretty big margin) which makes a lot of sense.

The reason Luke was so low in the beginning is because alot of people had already played enough luke from the betas/demo and everyone wanted to try the newer options.
As the game life continued and people got to explore the other characters, they ended up gravitating back to luke like "Wait a minute, Luke was just better!"

I think besides his moveset, people are drawn to Ryu's aesthetic. He's the classic karateka, with a cool looking Gi and persona. Same thing works for Makoto.

It was interesting finally picking up the game and finding literally zero Jp players throughout bronze to gold around after over a hundred matches despite how much people talked about him early in the game

I’m a diamond and I only check on tournaments once in a blue moon. Usually just to see some unusual matchups. If a Ken or JP is in the tourney I don’t watch
3:00 I guess to note on that point. I placed with Marisa low Plat. Only played her for about 2 weeks, still sitting there. Switched to gief and placed similarly but amd current mid diamond. Good chance a lot of those are just placement Alts for people. Should take play time into consideration imo

1) its per month, so if you did not play marisa in november that wont matter.
2) its just pick rate. They register every game played and count what characters were in that match.
If one guy plays three times as much as a normal player, he will have added more to the stats here.

That's often the mentality for any player that gets into any fighting game in general, whether it's super flashy character like Ken or a smoking hot waifu like Juri. I was once like that but my mindset has change and just go with characters that I like on who they are lore wise like Luke,Jaime,Lily & Juri.

FWIW, if you don't know what specifically makes him strong, you're probably not using him to his full potential, and likely playing him like a slightly spicy ryu

Some people honestly just play x flavor of the month in terms of characters and that’s the best way to go about it. Learning different playstyles and matchups passively and in a fun way.
In Canada east it feels like most of the characters I face in plat 1 are Ken. It's actually kinda annoying because I end up just not knowing any other MUs :-/

Solution: don't nerf Ken (or anyone) to the ground. Just tweak for the best balance but keep everyone strong and viable without ruining the muscle memory of players that main them.

Maybe it should be reworded. Rather than JP being “pervasive” , it’s more that when a JP does show up, he’s more “obnoxious” to fight against. So non JP people are louder
I think something big that happened is batch of players being influenced by big streamers on the up and up. I know there were a lot of people who learned how to play characters at high levels to support their favorite Vtubers. A lot of the content creators also chose characters that were great in Modern, and Luke is at the top of that tier list, meanwhile, for content creator picks, JP is close to the bottom because of how unusual he is. The one popular content creator that had a powerful JP, Sasatikk, dropped him for Jaime, lol
Also, for sure people choose Ken because he has a dope ass design and it just so happens that he's also very strong.

I 100% think it's the latter situation where it's people are getting stuck on certain characters. I have something like 1400-1500 games as Jamie and have been stuck in gold the closest I ever got to plat was being 1 game off but then I dropped a bunch of games. Meanwhile I have Guile, Rashid, Dhalsim, Lily, Zangief and maybe a few others at Platinum and I probably don't have 1000 games with all of those characters combined. Some characters are able to get higher ranks just because lower ranks struggle against that character. If you play Modern Gief you can get to platinum extremely easily just by using SPD and Level 3. Once you get there then people actually know how to play against that and you'll have to incorporate other moves. Guile all you need to do to get to plat is be willing to spam sonic booms and flash kicks because before plat struggle to walk down projectile spam and will jump to try to get over projectiles which you then flash kick and they're back at full screen. Dhalsim is much of the same where once you learn to fill up the screen with projectiles and limbs a high amount of players before plat just completely crumble under. Modern Lily is easy as long as your opponent doesn't realize they can drive impact your heavy assist combo which gets you a stock then either combo into or throw out raw EX or non condor spire and if it's blocked follow it up with EX Command Grab which will leave you at a distance that allows you to get another stock and rinse and repeat, if they get wise and start jumping the grab then you can DP them which again gives you time to get another stock. Characters that don't really have a way to "cheese" their way to plat art going to end up getting stuck in that lower category. While there are a few gimmicks you can pull off with characters like Jamie most of it is extremely unsafe so you need to actually fundamentally play well to break into those "higher" ranks. I also feel like there will be the opposite that holds true too though, like bad players who are bad and they think that playing top tier characters will be able to get them to a higher rank, that's gotta be why Luke is such a popular character, I cannot imagine that it's because of his design he is such a bland character. People are still so rabid over JP it's crazy, like I'd probably hate him more if I fought him as much as Ken, Luke, Cammy or DeeJay but I fight him so little that I barely know the match up, I feel like I fight more Dhalsims and I find him more annoying

I could always just do either or. Just depends if I like the character or not. Dee Jay is a hybrid in this game, so I didn’t even really think about it until now.
I feel like this is a really good example of why we cant wait for a year between patches. Looking at the usage rates since release its been the same about 7 characters at the top. For as much as people say the meta is constantly changing and new tech is always being found it hasnt changed the fact that with so many people playing we can reach the meta consensus so much quicker. Outside of manon and honda the rest of early tier lists would still be accurate

Ngl kinda glad that my boi Luke has risen in the usage rankings, I remember specifically that he was consider low tier before the game was released but after a while players are slowly gradually gotten better with him overtime. Granted is not the same numbers as how Ken is doing but is still high up next to Ryu overall. I'm sure that when ever time has pass and other dlc characters like Akuma comes out he will slowly decline for how popular and brain dead broken he will be.

I just started playing ranked and the only characters I fight are Ken, Cammy and Modern Juri.
in canada west there a lot of ken and ryu 2 dee jay chun li a least in my ranked diamond 2 i rarely see jp or manon honda too sometimes 1 or 2 one of those characters depends on the day but i haven.t seen them in a awhile that fine i will get to master slowly with my main honda after that marisa is next thinking about it.
As a guile main I know JP is my worst match up and gief is my best I’ve yet to lose to a gief in platinum. Once I learned the JP match up and realized he’s -2 on pierce and my fwd dash is faster than he can recover I can bum rush him with back fist and get in on offense. For any guile mains out here take note. JP IS -2 ON BLOCKED PIERCE EXEPT OD PIERCE. Use your superior mid range boom pokes and bum rush him to the corner. You’ll win 90% of the time.

In my personal experience as a mid-Plat player who just started the game last month, the JPs I fight in ranked definitely feel like they've been carried somewhat by his zoning tools. I had no idea how to get in on him at first, but now that ai do I find the JPs universally terrible at neutral.

They have to! He's an honest character and therefore is forced to work harder and play fundamentally 'better" than many others to get good results.

Like, what's the point here, they're not even saying it's because he's too strong just that he's so popular that you run into him constantly. He just has a lot of good tools that are more accessible where other characters similar in strength usually need better fundamentals to access theirs. If Ken as a character exposes "how many scrubs infest the game", maybe that's because Ken on an entry-level has stronger pressure tools which means you have more stuff to look out for on defense against him, giving you a higher mental stack than the Ken has to deal with. Jinrai, dragonlash, j-HP, st-hp, cr-mk. If the Ken player then goes "damn, I'm just better, these players are all scrubs", that's like Dhalsim players going "but my neuch is sick tho". Yeah, your normals go across the screen, I hope you're winning neutral.

No, this data isn't accurate and you can check yourself by going to the buckler site and sorting by character and rank. There are 600 more master JPs than Master Deejays but this chart says Deejay is #3 and JP is #7, so obviously wrong. Maybe this chart is total matches played by each character and not total amount of players using the character

Marissa is popular because people have been craving fighting game characters with simpler game plans for a long time. Honestly I think we need simpler character and simpler games just general.
Also, non grappler big bodies in general. People wanna swing, not block for 30 seconds when they pick big chungus

For me, I don't like charge because it feels like the mechanic keeps changing with how much leniency you get. I could play charge in SF4, I most certainly could not play charge in SF5 and I feel like I'm having an aneurysm trying to play charge in SF6.
I wonder if it's because, generally speaking, the speed of the game has increased a lot over the years. All the system mechanics too make games a lot faster paced
@@takeOnlyGreatness This is probably the reason, even though I bought SF5 when Akuma was added because of the big sale with the release of Arcade Edition, I didn't really play it much until after Dan was added simply because I couldn't find a character that clicked with me. But at that point, we had so many fast rushdown-y characters that trying to re-learn charge in an environment like that is just a recipe for disaster. Even more so with SF6 where when I last played was before they added the shortcut for drive rush cancels so it just felt so infuriatingly awkward trying to hold a charge but also want to double-tap forward to DR cancel.
Charge characters also take a disproportionate penalty against modern players, which was a hard start those first few months.
JP is understandsble because as busted as he is, he isnt a new player friendly character. You need at leeeeast very basic neuch and learn some setups to survive in the mid ranks because even lower ranks know how to get in with neutrals skips and fck you into the mud and JP can be very vulnerable to rushdown if you dont know what you are doing.
i picked up a side JP once I had a more solid foundation and understanding of the game and spent some hours practicing setups and frame data because when I first picked up the character I was overwhelmed by how much stuff you have to learn.
Comparing usage rates to previous games, it ain’t too bad.
As a Kim main it’s a little surprising she’s so low. I know she’s not strong but I at least thought she was popular. She was used more than Ken in the beta. Those pre launch nerfs really dumpstered her. Hard to see my main is so mediocre. Doesn’t even get credit for being the worst she’s just seen as meh which hurts more.

The ranks need to be reset honestly. Like you can get to platinum with a negative winrate because if you get a couple of wins in a row the game just shiwers you with LP and god help you if you beat soneone higher rank than you, literal hundreds of points. This makes ranked feel useless and just cosmetic

Capcom hung Lily out to dry with the lack of balance changes. She was slammed as being the worst character in the game in week 1 and while she's not the worst her reputation has stuck with the playerbase.
Hopefully they give her the qol changes and defensive buffs she needs as she's one of the worst victims of the games input gremlins. Her defensive options in the corner are pathetic, Her offense isn't nearly strong enough to justify being that vulnerable.
I mean 1 (or 2) player that I know that making Lily work is Hibiki and he is consider on the leader board the no.1 Lily player, but I do agree that she needs some changes in her kit to make her even more viable the same could be said for Jaime & AKI as well.
@@akilcharles3473 Hibiki is carrying Lily on his defence being so strong, It papers over the cracks but her overall performance stats are really rough.
I just think it's more that she's simple without being straightforward, and she also lacks the immediate neuron activation that other newcomers like Marisa and Manon provides. Like, she's a 2-step character that uses plus frames to start her strike/throw offense. For complete beginners that's absolutely gibberish, and more experienced players will notice her slower movement speed, stubby lights, slow buttons, and less layered gameplan. All these combined effectively make her a niche character regardless of where her strength is I think.
