- In this video, I am going to specifically cover “What is a GPU” for creatives professionals such as video editors, graphic designers, photo editors, 3D animation, etc. There are a lot of explainer videos related to gaming, but not much on how GPUs apply to creators.
GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) or sometimes referred to as a “Video Card” which I personally believe is a better classification, which you will see why in a minute.
Two Types of GPUs?
Integrated GPUs
Built into the CPU of the laptop or desktop computer.
Share the RAM with the CPU.
Discrete GPUs
Separate dedicated component within the computer.
Has its own memory (VRAM) so it does not have to pull from the computer's memory bank (RAM).
Dedicated GPU
- Dedicated CPU
- Dedicated RAM (VRAM)
- Dedicated BIOS chip
- Stream Processors (AMD)
- CUDA Cores (NVIDIA)
What does it do?
Responsible for rendering graphics… What kind of graphics?
What does a GPU do for Video Editing & 3D Animation?
Supports the CPU by sending the GPU a message to help it render the footage so it can focus on other equally important but less graphical tasks.
Playback in the Timeline
- Rendering the video in the preview.
Rendering
- Final Rendering before the video is exported.
- The GPU speeds up the processes of smoothing the 3-Dimensional edges of your footage or animation.
NOT exporting
Programs: Premiere Pro, After Effects, DaVinci Resolve, Sony Vegas, Blender, CAD, etc...
What does a GPU do for Graphic Design? Nothing...
The CPU is able to handle the rendering of graphics in Indesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Affinity Photo, etc… The CPU MIGHT call on the GPU to help in some crazy animation created in Photoshop, but that is going to be minimal.
Bro, this is like a class! This is quality content!
Thx 🙏🏼 for helping me choose which GPU, I need for my work.
So glad I can help!
Thank you! Great explanation... I was really confused 🤷🏼♂️ until now I watched your video you made it all clear...🤘🏼
Glad it helped!
Hi, just want to add that in checking for gpu benchmarks the gpus with "mobile" are dedicated gpus for laptops and those without are for desktops. Most desktop gpus are much faster than the mobile due to the thermals(desktops has big coolers) and factors such as having a much more core counts that can fit in it(big pcbs) which is limited in a space inside a laptop.
you corret many misunderstandings about video editing for me, thanks
Wonderful!
I'm trying to learn more about computers so I can make informed buying decisions and videos like this really help! Something I'm confused about are systems that run an integrated AND dedicated GPU. How do those work? Also, is it the norm to have dedicated GPUs soldered to the motherboard? Doesn't that just make them integrated GPUs?
Laptops will have GPUs soldered to the Motherboard 99.9% of the time, where as desktop computers will be interchangeable. Most laptops have integrated GPUs on their CPU, whereas most desktops do not. If you have both on a laptop it simply allows the laptop to divid up the tasks and make better use of the components in the computer.
Thanks for the video idea, I think I’ll make a video about this to better explain the details. :)
Wow, I wish I knew this information. I've haven't built my computer because of graphic card prices
Hello 👋 I hope you'll notice this 🙏
I am torn between two laptops. I wonder if you could suggest/help me in choosing what would be my better option.
First, I am a freshman college student. I am not a gamer. So, what matters to me is that the laptop can pretty much do creative stuff such as photo editing, video editing, graphic designs and other related activities. Thus, I hope that the laptop could help me create astonishing outputs.
Here are my 2 choices...
Laptop #1
- Intel i5-1135G7
- 4 GB Ram (upgradable)
- 2 GB Nvidia MX350 (dedicated)
Laptop #2
- Ryzen 5 5500u
- 16 GB Ram (non-upgradable)
- AMD Radeon Graphics
Thank you for the helpful information! This will help me choose a new laptop for my design work.
Great Video! If I purchase a ryzen 5 3600 chip together with the Gigabyte AMD B550 AORUS PRO AX Mini-ITX Motherboard would I need a graphics card as well? I don't do gaming only editing photos and Web development and watching 4k movies. I will be running 2 X 32" 4k monitors at 60hz.
If you are running two 4k monitors you will want a mid tier GPU... something like the GTX 1050 Ti would be suitable - amzn.to/382eLuX
Just a heads up: Legally I have to let you know that if you make a purchase through the links provided I will get a small commission but at no extra cost to you, but that is what keeps this channel alive and the helpful content coming your way. 🤘 😊
Thanks Ben! Very informative and helpful.
i think "davinci resolve" are relly on gpu processing, either editing or exporting video?🤔 does it?
GREAT CONTENT, keep it up
Thank you for explaining this clearly.
Towards the beginning, I think you got it backwards. The 'GPU' is the small chip inside and the 'graphics card' is the bigger bulkier device with heatsinks, fans, I/O etc...
You're thinking of the CPU
@@kwasabere No, I'm not. The graphics card, like one that plugs into a PCIe slot, has a chip on it that is the GPU. The GPU is a lot like a CPU, but dedicated to graphics. The graphics card is how you are able to connect a dedicated GPU to a motherboard.
Hiii Kaiser would you reccomend GPU intel UHD 620 and core i5 10th gen laptop for photo editing and playing light game like roblox ? 🤔🤔thank you supet loves your video
Photo Editing YES. But light gaming I am not sure. Unfortunately I am not a gamer so I do not know the ins and outs for those specs. As far as photo editing is concerned I would check out the MSI Modern 15 - geni.us/MSIModern15-10thGen
Hi Ben! I learned graphic designing 2 months ago and started freelancing using my brothers laptop for work, but now I want my own device as I’ve started earning money from it. It’s still the beginning so currently I’m only working on illustrator and photoshop but I want to expand my skills and offer video editing services also, which config is suitable for me ? I’m looking for desktop setup as it will cost me almost half the price of same config in laptop. My requirements are butter performance and a little future-proof config.
Please help me here
I'm thankful tbh😌😭
i wish i knew this earlier!
i want to buy pc and i am watching all your videos
thanks
Thanks man appreciate the help
Does external GPU matter in video editing? Rather than the Integrated graphics card?
Yes, a dedicated GPU is important. :)
Okay thanks brother😇, I just bought a laptop with GTX 1650, I haven't edited a video yet..but still I was curious whether it's important or not
@@arghyamondal6427 get to it lol I would have edited anything to test the waters out haha.
@@arghyamondal6427 so how was your experience with gtx 1650 and do you think i should consider gtx 1650 in 2023?
Hi Ben, I like your videos very much, and I hope you can help me. I read a lot about technical stuff, but I'm so confused, because some people say that the type of the graphic card (dedicated or integrated) is not important for photography stuff only (I mean: for work in Photoshop and Lightroom), some say it's crucial and I should buy a laptop with dedicated gpu. I don't know what to do now... Could you tell me, please, which graphic card I should choose for photography?
Thanks for this amazing video!!
sir please tell me predator triton 300 144refresh rate laptop how's for video editing and how's the color accuracy
Video editing is great, and the color accuracy is decent. It is 93% sRGB and 60% Adobe RGB.
sir i am confused between this and rog g531 please suggest me which is better?
i am also confused between triton 300 and Rog g Ben please tell which is best for video editing
What GPU would you recommend for 4k editing for smooth playback in adobe premier that's paired with Ryzen's 3900x CPU? I'm already spending a bunch on my new build and don't want to spend more than $300-$500 on a GPU
3070 or the upcoming 3060 from nvidia
Of all programs used by designers/video editors, which is the most graphically demanding?
Hi Ben, glad I found your channel. My goal is for render video, editing photo but not so into 3D. Which one below do you think is better for my mentioned purpose? I am not really into Games. Looking for laptop which can support video rendering and photo editing. Thank you.

I am video editor and received an offer at USD 720 for buying aspire 5, i7 10510U, with 2gb nvidia mx250, 16gb ram, 1tb HDD and 256ssd.
With this laptop can I do all my video editing in premiere Pro without any issues???
It will not be the best performance, but it should be able to handle basic 1080p editing projects.
Hi Ben, which gpu is better in 4k video editing? rtx 2060 6gb or gtx 1070 ti? im using intel xeon 20 cores 40 threads, thankyou bigtime!
But do we need a dedicated Graphics to do basic Graphics designing and video editing or does Integrated GPU does all the work??
not true. ive done everything about the best settings but in after effects, the cpu used almost 100% while gpu used only 28%
Thank you. I hadn't the faintest idea what I was looking for, but I do need a new computer. Mine is old and slow, and I am using Shotcut for editing because my computer can't handle anything else. Bad combination. Any recommendations for an inexpensive ($1,000 CDN max) laptop that can handle something like DaVinci?
Would 2GB decicated GPU be enough or required in order to do upto medium work on illustrations, rendering. I'm in budget
Hello! Nice Job! Which I choose for editing and rendering, under 250$? I have a Freesync monitor! Thanks
for exporting video, may i ask cpu matters the most? it spent me 4 hours to export a 40mins 4k file, will it be better if i upgrade the cpu? thx
So if I build a pc, could I just buy an intel i9 cpu with intergraded graphics without buying a separate GPU to run photoshop?
Does amd radeon vega 8 ryzen 7 5700u would work for basic graphic design like Ai, Ps, Ae ETC..
How about Filmora X, please? Need a GPU, and how many gigs? Thanks!
Can you please tell me something fast? The thing is my father knows very little about pc.He wants to buy a video editing pc with a powerful cpu but plans on not buying a gpu at all!How do I prove him wrong?
U compared a desktop gpu with laptop gpu does it matter.??
Do I need a gpu upgrade on a Mac if I run 3 4K monitors?
Hello ben! Do you think then nvidia mx250 or 150 would be a decent gpu for video editing? I will be mostly doing moderate video editing
Personally I have yet to test it in my studio. Which laptop are you considering and what is your budget? I would love to take a look and help.
Ben G Kaiser 1) Asus zenbook ux434fl 2)Asus Zenbook ux534ft. These are the laptops that Im currently looking at. However, I can only get them on sale as my budget is around 60k-70k rupees and the USD conversion rates are absolutely pointless as all the laptops here are sold for a much higher USD. I was also considering the acer conceptd 3, however I’m not sure of how it will function over the next 4-5 years. I would be happy with any laptop with a mx250 or even a gtx1050 or 1650 within my budget. Thank you in advance ben!
The ConceptD 3 is one of my favorite laptops to recommend as it is built towards the needs of creators. What is your concern with it?
Ben G Kaiser Well, I am primarily concerned about its longevity. As this is the first laptop that I’m going to buy, I dont want to make a mistake and buy something that lasts only for a couple of years before I have to replace it. I’ve also read that the fan can get slightly loud. And I’ve also got to wait for about two more months for acer to release the laptop. Those are my concerns with the laptop
What is your budget. If you are looking for a laptop that is almost 100% guaranteed to last I would get a MacBook Pro.
wich better 1660ti 6gb or rtx3050ti 4gb?
I'm building a new pc (budget pc) mainly for editing, image/video editing only, and I cant decide if I'll consider using a CPU with integrated graphics or buying a gpu that would cost me more. is it really ok if I choose the APU?
If you are buying a desktop pc, it will be fine for now and you can upgrade it later and buy an external gpu. For example ,the difference is that if the integrated gpu will render a video in 60 minutes ,in the other hand the external gpu will render it in 20 minutes , according to the difference and strength between them.
I may recommend Ryzen 3400G ,or intel i5 10400 not i5 10400f ,it is up to your budget
Can Intel i7-10700KF cpu work on photoshop or other graphic design program? This cpu does not have integrated gpu. So in this case, I believe I must add on a discrete GPU?
Hi Ben, i am confused in Graphics intel hd 520 and Intel hd 5500 which one is better for video editing and Some games becouse all Lenovo thinkpad have That integrated Graphics
You want to focus on the Dedicated Graphics when considering a laptop for video editing. For instance, this IdeaPad L340 is a solid buy for 1080p and some light 4k video editing - geni.us/LenovoL340 - Due to its i7 processor and GTX 1050 GPU.
I hope this helps. Just a heads up. Those are affiliate links, so if you do make a purchase through them I will get a small commission, but at no extra cost to you.
Hello Ben! I just purchased a Mac mini the configuration as follows: 6 core 8th Gen i7 / 64 GB of Ram/ intel UHD graphics 630 / 1TB SSD storage I’m gonna use it mainly in video editing FCPX ... I need your advice which best EGPU to purchase? please Let me know. 🙏🏼
powerful gtx or rtx card
Hey bro.. does gpu matter for video editing on filmora. Or is integrated graphics enough. I am just a small time editor for my own youtube vlogs. Wondering if i have to go for a laptop with gpu or the ssd instead. Confused because i have to sacrifice either of them under my budget. Iam also a coder.
Found all the info I needed as a person who cares only about video editing. Still find it incredible to believe that gpu just leaves Ram and Cpu do all the dirty work at exporting videos. It'd be of some greater use if it actually helped speed up the exporting process. Do you know if there are any other solutions to making it faster to export videos? (other than buying more high-end Cpus or increasing Ram?)
I bought my computer for the purpose of video editing. The guy in the shop told me the model I bought is good for video editing. My computer has 496mb of vram and a lot of editors rely on 4gb of vram. Problem I got is mine is a dedicated vram. Any ideas, I think I was tucked up. Plus is this the cause for my program to crash, I'm using davinci resolve 16.
Gtx 1060 6 gb vs gtx 1650 super which is better ?
The 1060 is going to be more powerful. :)
@@BenGKaiser Thanks
Please answer this i need to make a decision asap. You know the MSI gf65 thin, i already know its 120hz but can you tell me the overdrive response time for it. Its measured in “ms”
Personally I did not test these details. But Notebook Check did a fantastic write up including response times. I hope this resources is able to answer this question for you. www.notebookcheck.net/MSI-GF65-9SD-Laptop-Review-GeForce-GTX-1660-Ti-for-under-1000.439783.0.html
Thanks :)
Ben G Kaiser theres nothing there. What about the acer nitro 5 2020 version with the rtx 2060 and i7 9750
Is i310100 er igpu is enough for graphic degine?
Which one should I choose for programming? The dell xps 15 7590 or macbook 16. I have heard that the dell can be upgraded and mac cannot. Which one should I choose?Do reply
Yes, you're correct the Mac is not upgradeable. No matter the case they are similar in power and I would choose the operating system you are most comfortable in. Either Mac OS or Windows OS. Hope this helps.
I do graphic designing with photoshop, illustrator, indesign but also thinking of using after effects and Premier pro to expand my knowledge and work.
But I am very confused with specs to buy for my new laptop.
Is i5 8th gen good?
And 2gb nvidia graphics?
What do you think?
Confused between i5 8th and 9th gen processor and between 2gb and 4gb nvidia graphics as my budget is also playing a role here.
Please help!
I would get the 4gb of Vram if you are doing After Effects and Premiere Pro. not much difference between 8th adn 9th gen.... maybe a few percent boost in performance.
So which one would you recommend Hp pavilion with ryzen 5 3550h or intel i5 8th gen
Or asus tuf with ryzen 5 3550H or i5 8th gen??
people actually usually called it a video card than a gpu. Now with all the tech reviews everyone is savvy to gpu.
Please, help me!
As a video editor, I need your suggestion for choosing graphic card( egpu) for Lenovo yoga c930.
Laptop specs:
Processor : 8th-Gen Intel Core i7-8550U
Windows 10
Ports: 2 USB-C
Memory: 16GB Ram
uhhh broski there is discreet and discrete. Two different words that sound the same. So here discrete means it's a self contained, seperate graphics processor apart from the cpu. Discrete: apart, detached from others.
Hello Peter
You look like spider man
Nope...
The big bulky packaging is the graphics *card* .
The main small portion that actually renders in the gpu
Please answer my question i really need to make a decision
Integrated GPU vs Discrete GPU
very helpful
don't listen to this if you are watching this in 2021. this guy is extremely outdated. there is something called are hardware encoding which uses your GPU for exporting the video and project. so the more Cuda cores you have, the better. and wtf was that comparison? desktop GPU with mobile or laptop GPU?
don't create videos if you lack the basics. plz.
Should have just check the web than watching this... 😒👎👎
Why
Why though
I'm trying to have a better gpu for my work. I do work in premiere, photoshop, after and illustrator like 5 hours per day. Would you recommend a nvidia quadro p2000 or a nvidia GTX 1650ti?
