What is a GPU and do you need it for video editing and graphic design?

  • In this video, I am going to specifically cover “What is a GPU” for creatives professionals such as video editors, graphic designers, photo editors, 3D animation, etc. There are a lot of explainer videos related to gaming, but not much on how GPUs apply to creators.
GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) or sometimes referred to as a “Video Card” which I personally believe is a better classification, which you will see why in a minute.
    Two Types of GPUs?
    Integrated GPUs
Built into the CPU of the laptop or desktop computer.
Share the RAM with the CPU.
    Discrete GPUs
Separate dedicated component within the computer.
Has its own memory (VRAM) so it does not have to pull from the computer's memory bank (RAM).
    Dedicated GPU
    - Dedicated CPU
    - Dedicated RAM (VRAM)
    - Dedicated BIOS chip
    - Stream Processors (AMD)
    - CUDA Cores (NVIDIA)
    What does it do?
Responsible for rendering graphics… What kind of graphics?
What does a GPU do for Video Editing & 3D Animation?
Supports the CPU by sending the GPU a message to help it render the footage so it can focus on other equally important but less graphical tasks.
    Playback in the Timeline
    - Rendering the video in the preview.
    Rendering
    - Final Rendering before the video is exported.
    - The GPU speeds up the processes of smoothing the 3-Dimensional edges of your footage or animation.
    NOT exporting
Programs: Premiere Pro, After Effects, DaVinci Resolve, Sony Vegas, Blender, CAD, etc...
What does a GPU do for Graphic Design? Nothing...
The CPU is able to handle the rendering of graphics in Indesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Affinity Photo, etc… The CPU MIGHT call on the GPU to help in some crazy animation created in Photoshop, but that is going to be minimal.

Hi, just want to add that in checking for gpu benchmarks the gpus with "mobile" are dedicated gpus for laptops and those without are for desktops. Most desktop gpus are much faster than the mobile due to the thermals(desktops has big coolers) and factors such as having a much more core counts that can fit in it(big pcbs) which is limited in a space inside a laptop.

I'm trying to learn more about computers so I can make informed buying decisions and videos like this really help! Something I'm confused about are systems that run an integrated AND dedicated GPU. How do those work? Also, is it the norm to have dedicated GPUs soldered to the motherboard? Doesn't that just make them integrated GPUs?

    • @BenGKaiser
      @BenGKaiser  Před 4 lety +6

Laptops will have GPUs soldered to the Motherboard 99.9% of the time, where as desktop computers will be interchangeable. Most laptops have integrated GPUs on their CPU, whereas most desktops do not. If you have both on a laptop it simply allows the laptop to divid up the tasks and make better use of the components in the computer.
Thanks for the video idea, I think I’ll make a video about this to better explain the details. :)

    Hello 👋 I hope you'll notice this 🙏
I am torn between two laptops. I wonder if you could suggest/help me in choosing what would be my better option.
First, I am a freshman college student. I am not a gamer. So, what matters to me is that the laptop can pretty much do creative stuff such as photo editing, video editing, graphic designs and other related activities. Thus, I hope that the laptop could help me create astonishing outputs.
    Here are my 2 choices...
    Laptop #1
    - Intel i5-1135G7
    - 4 GB Ram (upgradable)
    - 2 GB Nvidia MX350 (dedicated)
    Laptop #2
    - Ryzen 5 5500u
    - 16 GB Ram (non-upgradable)
    - AMD Radeon Graphics

If you are buying a desktop pc, it will be fine for now and you can upgrade it later and buy an external gpu. For example ,the difference is that if the integrated gpu will render a video in 60 minutes ,in the other hand the external gpu will render it in 20 minutes , according to the difference and strength between them.

don't listen to this if you are watching this in 2021. this guy is extremely outdated. there is something called are hardware encoding which uses your GPU for exporting the video and project. so the more Cuda cores you have, the better. and wtf was that comparison? desktop GPU with mobile or laptop GPU?
don't create videos if you lack the basics. plz.

I'm trying to have a better gpu for my work. I do work in premiere, photoshop, after and illustrator like 5 hours per day. Would you recommend a nvidia quadro p2000 or a nvidia GTX 1650ti?
