  • Welcome!
Keith here, and this weeks video is how we installed a roof top "cellular" antenna to help boost the signal for our mobile WIFI system for when we are out in the "boonies" and wish to stay connected.
The antenna we picked up on TravlFi's web page. The cost is just over $120 dollars. The Cellular signal gain is around 4dB to 6dB, not massive but it is the difference in having service or not.... WE have a complete install video as well as speed tests demonstrating an increase in internet speed where we increased an average of 20Mbps down and 4Mbps up over the factory indoor antenna.
Is the antenna worth the money? I believe it is depending on where you are camping at like near trees or where satellite signals will be a no-go. I didn't want to mess around with the Starlink antenna, and I am not a super Wifi user so needing a rocket shop speed is not necessary for Kelly and I. This service is perfect for us and the most affordable service out there that is pause able.
This is what we use daily and many ask is it the fastest? No is the honest answer, but it is very quick, inexpensive and reliable which are the three things that I need for the RV. Do you need 1Mbps to watch a ball game? Nope!
Did I mention easy to use? You don't have to drag a dish out and find a clear shot at the sky... Nope! park and play! The best speeds I see have been 133Mbps while camping which is very very fast for our needs. This Router that we use is the JOURNEY XTR that is a category 7 router which is a series transmitter receiver.

So this is the second video where we added the outdoor roof antenna. The first video of the router set up is found at: czcams.com/video/ODu2wROeONk/video.htmlsi=rFYOronVFFMtqYuR

Thank you Thank you Thank you. Just purchased the Journey XTR and the external antenna and very surprised TravlFi did not supply instructions for the antenna. Where did you find the connection diagram?

I called them! I also was disappointed seeing no instructions!

Just to save confusion , this is not a how to video, this is "how I" set up the mobile Wi-Fi for traveling and using it while traveling. This is simply a video demonstrating an additional antenna on the roof to boost star signal while traveling and camping.
TravlFi has been working wonderful for us and what we need it for.

Does anyone know if it will work with or has experience using this with their new 5G router that they just came out with? I know it was originally for use with their LTE router but wonder if I upgrade to the 5G router if this external antenna will still work with the upgraded 5G router?

Great question and I literally just sent this question into tech support to find out.

I dont believe the 4G and 5G antennas are the same. Here is a great article to skim through. www.sannytelecom.com/4g-antennas-vs-5g-antennas/#:~:text=few%20key%20differences%3A-,1.,2.

Hi Todd, I received a quick reply from the TravlFi SME and no the RTU antenna like I have installed won't support the 5G router. Here is their response word for word :
"No, the current rooftop/outdoor antenna sold for the JourneyXTR does not support the new 5G router offering. The antenna is not configured for or tuned to handle 5G (specifically mid to high 5G bands).
Also, note that all 6 external antennas on the new 5G router offering are dedicated solely to cellular/5G reception."
Thanks Todd this was a great question!

This device works! But, it's not anywhere close to ideal. it works maybe 75% in SE State Parks and almost never the first night of rv camping. I recently purchased the outside antenna( came with no directions) watched this video, rebooted multiple times and still no luck. My Verizon cell phone has two bars. 😡

Sorry to hear this. I have an area in mid Michigan where mine struggles as well. When you open a browser, go to travfi customer portal, select "manual change provider" and see if it helps.
It appears that Travfi no longer uses Verizon. Not sure what's going on there..
The next thing is download a speed test app. Select 5G network on your phone or tablet and run the test. Let us know what service shows up when you test , my bet is it's ATT.
Third , I'd call them. If it doesn't have a carrier in your area that had solid service it won't be a value, let me know how these go.

We just completed a 2500 mile spring break trip 12 nights using state parks from Michigan to Florida and back., We had really good luck with the Travlfi system. There was one state where the service was slower at 14down and 2 up, but we still streamed our CZcams videos. Our strongest signal was 122Mbps but the average speed over all of Florida was 82Mdown, average up was 21. Somedays better of course. It worked very good for what we do and it is on all of the time in our solar powered RV. It has truly been a game changer for us to stay connected...

    Improved speed?

    • @ThreeDayRV
      @ThreeDayRV  Před 6 měsíci +1

Yes speeds improved a fair amount, somewhere between 18 to 30Mbps down. This is a worthwhile add on and the router itself is very fast having a best speed test for me of 135Mbps. We can not complain about it. It fits our camping lifestyle perfectly. The router also connects to the campground we love so that we do not use any data! #Gamechanger!

Yes, I have no way to measure db gain but Speedtest.net definitely showed great gains as we expected. Well worth it.
