Volkswagen T-Cross 1.5 TSI 150hp - The One With More Oomph! (ENG) - Test Drive and Review

  • Volkswagen T-Cross is a small B-crossover. It is noticeably smaller than the Renault Captur, the Nissan Juke or the Skoda Kamiq. The VW T-Cross is more than 10 cm shorter, and has almost 10 cm shorter wheelbase, than any of them. If you like to sit higher, than in a hatchback, you like compact dimensions, and you don’t need 400+ litres boot space all the time, then this could be something for you. The back seat slides allowing you to choose between boot space and rear legroom.
At launch the T-Cross was available only with a 1-litre 3-cylinder engine with a 95 or 115 hp. Now there is also a 1.5-litre 150 hp engine, and it makes the T-Cross much more versatile. The 150 hp Volkswagen T-Cross is available only with a DSG or a double-clutch transmission.
    ↔ Volkswagen T-Cross dimensions:
    ✔ length: 4108 mm
    ✔ width: 1760 mm
    ✔ height: 1584 mm
    ✔ wheelbase: 2551 mm
    ✔ boot/trunk: 385/455 L
    💲 Volkswagen T-Cross price: 18 700 euro
    💲 Volkswagen T-Cross price as tested: 33 000 euro

Very objective review. Ordered 1.5 DSG at mid January, received at late May; VW increased price of all models at early April, although prices may still vary a lot throughout Europe. I was lucky enough to score a Style package (no NAV) unit for less than 24k EUR. To focus on engine performance, I'll say that it's quite refined, internally almost silent below 2.5k RPM, from outside revving sounds just like standard 4-cyl. Decent torque plays well on uphill or during overtaking outside cities. Since I'm still trying to act nice to throttle (running in), in just a few recent occassions I felt what it can deliver a nice kick when asked. 2-cylinder mode is a great fuel saver, in drive you can't feel when it switches on or off. Since I have no previous experience in AT or DSG, impressions could be a bit subjective but if there were issues with DSG and this 1.5 EVO engine on other VAG vehicles before 2020, I can assure you this is either fixed or refactored - no jinking or kangaroo effect. I plan to use DSG's manual mode more often as old MT habbits die hard. Fuel economy is up to 6.5L in city, same as gentle out-of-city breeze; highways will get you near 8L if you cross above 140km/h. Things to watch over ? Scratchy plastic everywhere, very easy to be damaged if not careful. Also, this aint Ford Focus, you can enter the turn with high speed but getting out in one piece can be challenging; you can feel the roll just a bit to remind you where your limits start. Final impressions - not suitable for adrenaline addicts, people with severe trauma of VW or German engineering. Others might consider this car as a good benchmark against other alternatives.

@Marek: I have a feeling, the perfect Small SUV hasn't been constructed yet. Each one is kind of compromise in it's own way. And depending on what you need or want, you'll decide for the one or the other. The Peugeot 2008 and the Renault Capture look much better and may also have the better engines (compared to the 3 cyl by VW). But neihter one is big enough for me (1,85 m but "sitting giant") or my son (1,86 m with extra long legs). The Capture I couldn't even enter on the passenger's seat, because I can't bend my head deep enough to fit in (no kidding). And Sonny couldn't find a way to get his legs behind the 2008's steering wheel. It was the much more boring T-Cross, we all fitted in easily on the front as on the back seats as well. But then there was that 115 PS Engine that is rather "meh". And the 150 PS 4 cyl you only get with DSG. So the Seat (edit:) ARONA FR became the car of our choice. Not nearly as good looking as a Capture or a 2008 and therefor a compromise again. Q.E.D.

I feel you. I had similar issues and the Suzuki Vitara checked all the boxes, was the most fun to drive and the cheapest as well. With the facelift they also added some necessary soundproofing with the higher trims and engines and for me, it’s the perfect, fun, practical car.

  • @stefanp.9222
    @stefanp.9222 Před 4 lety +1

I'd go for this configuration on a Kamiq, because of the extra space and more options as standard (for the Style pack).
Captur is the best looking of the bunch, but had a few bad experiences with Renaults over the last 10 years, so... nope! Never again!

You can buy a 2 year old E class estate for € 35.000 or a C class even cheaper.
If Mercedes isn’t your taste get a passat or bmv, there’s many choices for 2-3 year old with low km. For the same price of this plastic T- cross. Try mobile.de if you don’t live too far away from Germany just to have idea of prices.
If you decide to go that route only buy from respectable certified Autohaus.Pay a little extra for peace of mind....cheers!

You get the same luggage capacity in a smaller form factor, so in a city scenario the T-Cross is the better choice. Also I'm willing to bet in real life you'd be able to pack more stuff into the T-Cross, because the T-Roc has a sloping tailgate. The T-Cross has a sliding rear bench, etc.
