Yabbies are top bait anytime for just about everything!! Especially blackfish. Prob best bait of all for them. Best to use smaller yabbies whole or whole tail

@@robbiefishing Malu got a couple of nice ones the other day up in the Snowies, I don't want to go that far, lol. All of an hour and half more driving. I guess I will have to bite the bullet in the next couple of weeks if I cannot find one locally.
Love your videos, you inspire me to go fishing up at howqua river and I'm able to catch trout myself. You are my favourite youtuber and I love watching your videos with my dad.
I love the consistent uploads mate! What time do you think is best to fish during colder months? Also I got myself those spin wright chatter bait jig heads from your tackle club box about a month ago. I reckon it will work well with strike tiger orange minnows.
7 or 8 pound. A 3 pound trout will take those yabbies . Just more likely to spook them. As ex pat aussie living in nz, i drift pawns in rivers often, it surprising hiw smaller a trout will take them.. on certain days.. normally after rain...
Was some cool footage when he literally started chewing on the minnow, they're a mean fish the old trout I've done ok with yabbies and shrimp as a whole bait, as long as they're 'pinky finger' size or so by just drifting them like you would worms. Grasshoppers were probably my favourite if you run into a lot of hoppers or crickets- check the radiator and grill on the front of the car sometimes you might get a dragonfly too!
Thanks mate. I agree about the grasshoppers, they are dynamite trout bait in season. I like small wood grubs. They're hard to find, but I remember having some incredible trout fishing with them years ago.
Gday Robbie, AWSOME video as always, have you heard anything about the American fish call talipa? Yesterday i saw a sign saying all the invasive fish in Australia and it said talipa are a new pest, atleast your catching fish, today me and dad went out and got nothing on the new kayak, I nearly lost my rod to a bite and plenty of other little ones, I’m still new to not using bells and on the yak we can’t use bells I ,I’ve ur channel sooooo much and I want you to keep posting FOREVER
Thank you so much for your very kind words mate. Yep, I've heard of Talapia but never caught one. They haven't made it here yet. I know they occur in some Melbourne ponds and in some parts of QLD.
My yabbie story, three mates in a 12ft flat bottom boat just out of Howlong ,we’ve got loads of little yabbies and a few monsters. I’ve grabbed a yab that’s easy eight inches long and and inch round and my mates are starting to laugh and pull the piss ,the standard ya full of it ,ya never gona catch ship kind of stuff. I’m like I’ll just it a half hour and change it if I have no bites ,from here on in ya can guess what happened. About 8to10’ under the boat it started crawling down a big sandbar, just as it got out of sight ,yep smashed, no metrery but a bloody ripper Cod . A day before Cod season 🥲🥲🥲🥲🥲so I had to let him go,bloody spewing because I absolutely love chewing on em.
Haha that's funny. Personally, I don't believe there is a yabby in Australia that is too big for a Murray cod. They just love them. Isn't it always great proving your mates wrong. LOL 😂😂😂
@@robbiefishing yep😂😂my fav bait for Cod is still a Baddie grub, hands down winner bar none and great family friendly fun to find and get. P.s. I’ll tell ya about my 23’4” tiger shark off the back of a prawn trawler a K off Weipa wharf on a hand line one day. ❤️🇦🇺
I would have been interested to see what they did woth the whole yabby. in a clear water dam, i saw two big trout ripping a yabby apart and it was bigger than thoes yabbies... they ripped the claws off and ate them, they then came back and fought over the rest tearing it to bits, they only left the main part of the body, legs tail and claws gone... Im surprised they didn't eat the bit f yabby tail from the smell, maybe because as you said they wouldn't really be eating yabbies at the moment, due to rhwm hiding away. Anyway that was a ripper trout mate and a beautiful bit of water 👍
WOW That would have been great to see. Thanks mate, I am surprised they didn't either, but I think they have other things on their minds at this time of the year.
@@robbiefishing that's actually probably the best point, the spawn isn't far off, that nice big trout probably hit that minnow in anger more than anything. It sure was a crazy thing to witness, unfortunately it couldn't be picked up on camera, if only I could have cast it out there and not spooked them. This was at Thompson's creek dam near Portland NSW
Robbie, I've seen you use a "device" to attach your artificials to your line. Think you could do a "mini tutorial" identifying that device. Maybe include a how to for the knot you use to attach the device. Doesn't have to be long or complicated. Nice trout in this video. I took, check the stomach content when I keep a trout. I often find crayfish and I've caught trout on small live cray's. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks so much for your kind words mate. Those devices are called Line Clips. Thanks for the great idea. I will add it to my list of videos to share during the winter months when things are very quiet.
hey Robbie, bit of a strange question but, what shoes/boots are you wearing when you in these types of streams and rivers? I imagine the rocks and banks are slippery with moss and what not, I'd like to head out and do some small creek trout fishing this year and want to be as prepared as possible. cheers mate👍
Hi mate, I always just wear gumboots. Most of the time they fill up with water. Haha They keep my feet protected from snakes, blackberries, grass seeds etc... and when they dry out they don't shrink and cause me blisters.
Hey Robbie I said to my friend who was going fishing “hey mate if you need any help finding bait let minnow” 😂 that’s a fishing joke especially for you. It would be funnier if you said it to holly in a video 😅 just a thought
I've only caught one trout on a yabbie tail in lake Eildon Ford's inlet don't know if it was just hungry or just a fluke that's gone back 12 years ago now. Had never caught one since haha
The visual pleasure of autumn colours is mesmerising, nice shots Robbie.
Thanks so much mate.
Autumn colours! 👌 at least ya got one, nice looking trout too! 😁🎣
Thanks mate. 👍
Awesome mate, such an amazing little waterway. Think the trout might of liked the yabbies steamed with beer..
Haha I think so too mate, and I don't blame them. LOL 😂😂
G’day Robbie we used to use yabbie tail but we used to peel the shell off and just use the meat good for Black fish and trout cheers mate
G'day Robbie glad you share your trials with us always good to see. Those trout are stunning fish.

Trout love small yabbies about 50mm long
And that creek has gold written all over it

I've often fished just like this, but in saltwater. Works well for esturine species. That jointed minnow would do well in the salt too.
Thanks mate. I'm not going to give up on this technique. I will try it again next summer.

BUT they were COOKED!
