Springboks v British & Irish Lions Second Test Preview

  • So, the first Test has been played amidst blood and thunder, with the British & Irish Lions 2021 team rising from the abyss of a 12-3 half-time deficit to claim a 22-17 win.
    The last time they lost a Test series after winning the opener was against Australia back in 2001. However, if the series follows the patterns of the last tour in 2009, the Springboks still have another level of physicality they can reach.
    Twelve years ago, their 25-22 win in the second Test at Loftus Versfeld went down in rugby lore as one of the most attritional matches ever played. In 2021, a wounded South Africa are liable to come out like caged lions of their own making.
    If the Lions win, they will have won a Test series in South Africa for the first time since 1997 - and for only the third time since 1896. Warren Gatland would become only the second coach, alongside Sir Ian McGeechan, to have led two winning Lions tours.

Great analysis as ever 2 good teams and I’m sure the Springboks will step up, and it will be close. Look forward to your post-match. Enjoy the game.

    Hey Gareth, I sincerely hope the Lions win with respect and fairness this weekend, and without help from the referee. Above all, let's get back to the rugby. All Lions fans know Rassie was right in pointing out the inconsistency in officiating. But it's very common to just say, some calls go for you, some against, and the refereeing is like the bounce of the ball, totally unpredictable. It's a chaotic sport to referee. I don't believe the refereeing was biased, it was was just poor and baffling at times. Good luck to the people of South Africa in these troubled times.

      Re the officiating - this has been a big bone of contention in both hemispheres for far too long. In my opinion World Rugby has been deliberately avoiding this problem with officiating, literally kicking the can down the road for a future executive board to handle. Every rugby fan just wants the same application of the laws & rules in every match, not the lottery it continues to be. For instance, I believe that if Wayne Barnes had been handling that first test match, Hamish Watson would have gotten a Yellow Card at the least for that tackle. The issues extend to the TMO operation - what were the problems with the Video Cameras in that match? Decisions were given that made NO SENSE based on the Camera Angles that were shown in replays. How could Marius Jonker tell that one of the Boks players was ahead of the kicker for one of the disallowed tries, when the camera angle shown on TV was from BEHIND the action? Maybe the TMO had a better angle to confirm his decision - in which case THAT was the angle to broadcast! Simply put, there should have been NO QUESTIONS about major game time officiating decisions regardless of who is reffing or in the video booth. World Rugby needs to get ALL MATCH OFFICIALS enforcing the rules/laws the exact same - officials who make their own interpretations need to be let go.

      @@fawltyoldboybasil.2178 isnt that true across the board? England lost to Wales due to poor ref'ing, at least it had a major impact on the game. Scotland should have had a penalty in the 2015 RWC, there are countless examples of a ref deciding the game. In this case though, the Lions were at least the better team overall. When England whined about the 6N game, the rugby world said, "get over it". Same applies. And if you look at 20min in of the video, there was a shoulder charge by green 13 and the hold back can easily be interpreted as arms entangled as both players turn. AWJ although initially listened too, is clearly ignored for his follow up. Faf should have had a red, H. Watson a yellow, should of would of could of. The attack on the impartiality of the ref is making the game of rugby a laughing stock

    • @fawltyoldboybasil.2178
      @fawltyoldboybasil.2178 Před 2 lety

      @@philipvarney2284 I agree somewhat with you. Far too often we are hearing 'the referee is letting the game flow' nonsense. I believe that the issue of impartiality would become far less frequent if the officials adhered to the rules/laws consistently. The National Unions, Players, Coaching Staff and, Officials all know by now that PLAYER SAFETY is (supposedly) the Top Priority in the game. Yet on-field decisions made by match officials are actually muddying the waters, and inadvertently/unintentionally leading to acts of dangerous/foul play by certain players. If players can be cited for these types of acts and receive lengthy suspensions, why not apply the same standard to the performance of match officials? There are clear guidelines in place now for all players involved in the game at the professional level as to the conduct of their play - no ambiguity. Time for World Rugby Blazers to get their collective heads out of the sand (or elsewhere!) and fix the officiating once and for all.

      @@fawltyoldboybasil.2178 we're on the same page, just different paragraphs. To apply the rules consistently sounds great and should be step 1, but the rules are so convoluted and open to interpretation that the referees may actually be fighting a lost cause. Nigel Owens says that at any ruck or maul there are often countless infringements and the ref has to make a call to "let the game flow" as you say. Maybe it's the laws that are the problem if the result of consistent interpretation would mean constant stoppages and half the team in the bin? In any case, an hour long video on social media is not the way to address issues that go beyond the individual concerned. They've put the official Berry(?) in an impossible position and put rugby into the main media for the wrong reasons. It's not exactly encouraging people to become referees either. There are clearly issues with new rules on player safety, much more proactive interventions from TMOs, different interpretations across countries and hemispheres, different quality referees, players adapting, and not least, rugby having more money in it now, so decisions are more important (eg like football) etc but for the SA coach to pick on this one guy is classless and makes the SA rugby establishment be seen in a poor light (imagine if it were Eddie Jones and England doing this!)

    SA along with the ABS, have been the best rugby teams on the planet for decades. In the past refs have been more than kind to them, players like McCraw and Berger, to name but two, got away with murder. Rassie's video has left a nasty taste in the mouth for the wonderful game of rugby and I would'nt be suprised if he's punished by world rugby for bringing the game into disrepute.
    Jamie Roberts predicted three weeks ago that the Lions would win the first test and go on to win the series. After last week's game and the way the Boks died in the s/half, I tend to agree with him.

I agree with almost all Rassie's points, but these surely have to be addressed through the current channels. using the existing processes to change the system. Just my thoughts, I expect a backlash akin to a wounded Springbok for stating this! here! Let's hope for a great game, and a level series would set the decider up nicely.
