I'm a South African and all I can say is he was/is the best there ever was. Will never see anything like him again.
His All Black career ended in 2000 at the age of 24 for some reason. He was way better than Leon McDonald and Mils Muliaena at fullback. He had so much more to give. What a pleasure watching Andre 'Rolls Royce' Joubert and Cullen play in the same era. Arguably the two best fullbacks ever.
@@johnbo51able Cullen's last test for the All Blacks was in 2002...against France.
@@khankake9576 My apologies. 1996-2002. Still finished All Black career too early at 26 after Mitchell dropped him. He could have offered a lot working with Wayne Smith and Graham Henry for the All Blacks
@@johnbo51able nasty knee injury, took his pace unfortunately, what a player.
Regardless of Nationality or Race, you are a true Ruggaz fan, we will be good friends😊 Every team has an outstanding player, SA Springboks are my 2nd fav team hands down🏉
As a ardent springbok supporter , I have to say that he engrafted his name as probably the greatest fullback of all time. He made scoring tries look so easy and he was lethal at it. Magnificent player
Merhts’ pass was underrated. One of the best distributors of the modern era
I'll never forgive John Mitchell for dropping the greatest fullback ever out of the all blacks squad back in his prime
@John Wilson thats funny, it says never so..
@John Wilson thank you tony robbins. Peace be with you.
@@hmmahlahbahhhhhhhhhhhh2123 he was declining in 98, but stupid to drop him in 02' especially at 26
Yeah worst Allblack dropping ever! Stay away Mitchell; stay away. While I'm here.. not taking Ngani Laumape away 2019 RWC and not playing Ben Smith against England was some of the dumbest shit ever!!
Nah Cullen was never the same after his knee injury. Still a solid player, but he lost that electrifying pace
Cullen, Lomu and Wilson were probably the most formidable attacking back three of all time, surely. Speed, power and skills.
Wilson was a black cap too, wasn't he
You’re right. Only Joe Roff, Ben Tune and Chris Latham / Matt Burke could come close to that
@@nathanwilliams2152 Took the words out of my mouth...
It’s a shame they had Marshall trying to set that backline alight. So laboured with his lollipop passes
@@nathanwilliams2152 Blanco, Sella, Lagisquet/ Joubert, Small, Williams weren’t to bad
Always looked like he was jogging but no one could catch him. Smooth
The best full back ever!!
totally agree
As an Aussie - agreed.
As a bok supporter agreed
Yep, definitely one of the ultimate full-backs ever. Wonderfully balanced sprinter and master of his position.. The best of his generation I think.
No, JRR [sideburns] Williams. It's one thing being great, it's another when you change the way a games played
This guy was a superstar in his time, top speed and beautiful footwork.
And balance. He is the most balanced player to ever pull on a boot. You see good shots on him and he just maintains his momentum. Very difficult player to pull down.
Best ever. No question.
3: Roger Gould. 2: Serge Blanco. 1: Christian Cullen. (Honorable mentions: Gavin Hastings. Marty Roebuck.)
@@Fuzcapp Gavin Hastings!!! Really, i take it you didn't rate JPR Or Andy Irvine, or even Jason Robinson, i could go on, but, Gavin Hastings!!!
JPR Williams. No other fullback has come close other than Blanco
@@Mumbo_Jumbo_Kiwi.1 Blanco in attack but I think Cullen's defence and positional play made him a better custodian.
@@Fuzcapp did you factor in the generation gap?
He seems to find space and seamlessly glides past everyone and over the pitch! 1lb per 1lb one if the strongest. Best there was. From an Ireland fan. Mitchell ? What a Berk!
If you mean Drew Mitchell - from an Australian ... wholeheartedly AGREE!
@@Fuzcapp John Mitchell the All Blacks Coach that dropped him from the team because of personal differences, the worst All Black Coach in history. Haha Berk, love it!!!.
@@Fuzcapp stick to hanging around public toilets after dark...that’s what you know best. Drew who? 😂💄💋😽
His talent was as big as his humility. Rolls Royce of a player
Yes... Very talented and humble on the field...
THERE WAS ONLY ONE ROLLS ROYCE AND IT WASNT HIM
@@dawiebenjamin3249 That is 100% true. Joubert was the Rolls Royce. Cullen was the Express.
The most beautiful runner the game has ever seen. Freaking love ya Christian, you were my idol back then and still love watching the magic and reminiscing about the good ole days.
Was that James Small trying to trip him as he ran in for that first try?
He was a grub
My favorite player.
His run looked effortless beating multiple defenders with ease.
Tough as on defense.
Humble.
Legendary status.
Mitchel was a fuckwit.
Don’t tarnish fcukwits with someone like that
Before John Mitchell came and destroyed his career.
He said he dropped him because he never developed a kicking game...
Take into account that he was played out of position before Mitchell was ABs coach. That was the beginning g of the downfall.
@@bombasticbadassbrigade3552 Not sure why they moved in from fullback to wing and then centre. That happened under John Hart. Mitchell preferred Mils Muliaina and a great career came to an abrupt end...
@@kalalakapay Cullen dropped positions because of a succession of hamstring injuries, Since then Cullen was never the same again. Cullen lost that blind acceleration and agility off the spot he was best known for.
When nz rugby went to the shit...
Blanco was good - but Cullen was electrifying !!!
Best fullback ever in my books.
I wish The Sharks and Boks had not moved JP Pieterson from 15 to 14 because I do believe he would have been a similar player to Cullen and Serge Blanco. Two other similar 15's were Joe Roff and Andre Joubert but Cullen was the best of the lot by a mile.
Brendon Joseph I’m a big fan of JP Pieterson in any position he plays. Almost wish he was an All Black 😉
And where does mils go on your list?
@@abcd1234jason 100 mils below.
loco minyana no way! For a start how many test matches these guys played? Mils was dominant for so long he had some of the best wingers outside him that were the finishers and the glory men. Cullen was an amazing runner so effortless his ability to confuse defenders was amazing, but his all round game was not as good as other fullbacks
@@abcd1234jason Mils wasn't that dominant. He couldn't take the FB position off Leon McDonald for a long time.
Cullen was a very good and fearless defender also, so not sure what you mean by his all round game not being as strong as others.
Those were the days! There'll never be anything like it again. I watched him play. There are not enough superlatives to describe his brilliance. He inspired so many youngsters to take up rugby.
Ahhh when Rugby played with Freedom..
when Rugby played in daylight..
When the A.B'z and Boks were sworn enemies!

@@TaYzhARr having Johnny come off the bench is a great asset to slot those all important penalties, but Beauden Barrett with that *ridiculous speed* lol idk man! maybe Johnny by a whisker.
Roff and Bender? Bender only because he can also play back 3 and Center.
@@TaYzhARr I reckon the telling difference is in our loosies. You went for brawn and toughness, I went for dynamic and height.
Andre Venter nearly 2 meters tall runs like a wing, and Keiran Reid is Buck and Zinny rolled into one. Man played *108 consecutive Tests* at *80 mins each!* Man's got a motor that of Richie!
But Jerry & Zinny Legends man! I've *always* been a *Buck* man but when I read that stat of Kieran Reads that's unreal for a No8
Love how they just got on with the game when late dives after tries were scored. Great sportsmanship and class from AB's there's even a trip in there lol
Imagine that stuff today............
They would get a half season suspension hahahaha.
Around the 2.20 Mark that is beautiful skilled rugby what handling skills! 👌
The best was the best is the best forever. I watched him playing every time new Zealand played. He was my motivation and inspiran to myself in my rugby days for Bordèr team, fort hare rugby and my craven week days. Im from South Africa
This was great watching, the commentary and crowd certainly make this an awesome watch. Cullen greatest 15 to play the game. My opinion. 😂👍👍👍
To me he was the best running full back the All blacks ever had legend
Cullen had the record for bench press in the weight room as well
Lightening! One of the best.
Je suis français et j' ai toujours admiré ce joueur.
Brilliant, and can we just take a moment to appreciate those offloads from Jeff Wilson too cos god dam they were timed to perfection. There was something really special about Wilson and Cullen at the back best one-two punch 🤛 in rugby if you ask me
kobe ryan an awful lot of Zinny in these moves as well - where's his highlights package?
Those passes of Merts… that backline, that team… all for King Cullen… fantastic!
Best ever running AB fullback. He is the GOAT.
Cullen and Lockyer, the best Full Backs i've watched growing up...
God, as an Australian who was late teens playing fullback back then, this guy was the greatest fullback (Chris Latham) a close second.
I always tried to model my game on Cullen’s, always trying to run it from all corners to run the opposition off their feet.
Glad I got to enjoy a few beers with him one night at The Transcontinental Hotel in Brisbane back in 1999.
Yoooo Latham was an absolute battle axe defender though, clean forgot about him.
Christian Cullen was so good that there has been no one like him ever since.
Poetry in motion... The anticipation, the PACE, the strength and sheer athleticism... an UTTER legend and STILL my favourite All Black and Rugby international player of ALL time... KAPAI and Kia KAHA, o Paekakariki Express... ✊😉👍
Absolute pleasure to watch from the canes to the AB 👏👏
Legend...best full back for sure imo...smart, tough, determined and fast
What a player he was. Every time the ball went to him and the commentator said his name, you anticipated something special. It was a privilege to have watched him play and an all time great.
2:23 so many passes. It sounds so easy... Masterpiece
I reckon that last pass from Umaga to Cullen was forward thou!
Pure Finesse done gracefully.my favourite AB of all time😎
Cullen still numbers one fullback in my book and he can score from anywhere of the field 👍🏻
The Pace and The Power and The Passion.
Man, Wilson, Cullen and Lomu… will there ever be a more formidable back 3⁉️While Boks were busy trying to mitigate Lomu, Cullen and Wilson just blew us open. The perfect decoy.
While at a safe start work meeting with Rushy as guest speaker he said that Cully was the only guy in the world that he knew at the time who could put a side step or curve in his runs but wouldn't lose any speed in the process.
Wonderful to watch No.15
That play @2:20 😲
Deadly from long range and absolutely lethal while up in the line. A player that could leave you grasping at air and make it look like a walk in the park all the while doing it to you.
Cullen seems to glide when he ran yet that was deceiving to many who tried to catch him. its like he had a couple of gears left he didn't need, or only did enough to get the job done. he was a great player for sure, his tries were special a pleasure to watch.
Weird how the Blacks are still apply the same style of playing.Other rugby nations adapted and changed there game so many time but they stick to there guns and run you into the ground. And if they lose they come back passing quicker, offloading more and adding more players their fast running game.Still the only team with a 15 man back line😂
And still they could not win the 2019 wold cup. Go Bokke!
@@reynardtterblanche708 yeah congratulations mate, would have been better if you guys took it of us, but hey England thoroughly deserved their win.
@@reynardtterblanche708 🤣👌... race you guys to four 🏆🏆🏆🏆
To be fair the springboks still tried to play 1960's rugby for a long long time even when you guys had awesome backs you still picked 10's like Stein etc..
Legend has it that Fleckie is still reaching for Cullen
Goat running fullback. Would of been a legend at league to. Those lines.
What a footballer... all the great players in any code have timing
Absolutely amazing
The try at 2:22 is a thing of beauty. Even as an Australian.
The balance and beauty of his stride
Cullen is one of the best all black player I've ever seen. Greatest of all time 👌
I would love to have seen how good Cullen was at schoolboy level. He was such a balanced runner, even good shots on him wouldn't bring him down. If he was like that at school level he would've been impossible to stop - a one team scoring machine.
He wasn’t at a renown rugby school.
I saw him playing for Kapiti College during a tournament. Remember him running it back at every opportunity. Still got the newspaper clipping somewhere, where he was picked as the player of the tournament (which I wrote :)).
Cullen and Lomu by far my favourite All Blacks of all time
For full transparency im a Welshman....who was a teenager watching Cullen in his Prime....remember 1st time i saw him was Hong Kong sevens when he scored a length of the field try and Serevi tried to trip him just before the try line....it was a passing of the guard....an aka 47 wouldn't have stopped him that day! Him and Blanco were the best in my humble opinion to wear the shirt....although my Dad still says JPR haha. Cullen glided like a catamaran.....hence it was so sad to see him put in the centre for NZ during the 95 world cup....wasted there...One of the best of to ever do it! One of my all time rugby hero's!
Always kept the defence guessing by holding the pill with both hands. Legend.
Think Matt Tait could have been our / English CC if he had been managed properly. But yes, CC what a player. All pace and poise. It must have been like tackling a greyhound !
Gary Smith I was always a fan of Jason Robinson in union and league. Quite a CC-like player himself 👍🏾
That team, man, can't believe they failed at the World Cup for all these years. What a generation, though...
I'm from Munster (cork). I remember going to Musgrave park for Cullen's debut. However he never performed for Munster. Even though he was still only 28 or 29 he seems well over the hill by then
Him & Lomu first choices in the World Greatest 15
Such perfect balance from a rugby runner we have not seen since
Best 15 ever wow culli so much pace a mean step and strenth
The trip on him as he scores the first try. Typical dirty tactics from the Springboks 🤣
I've always disliked the Sprinboks dirty attitude to rugby, there's just something in there DNA, that they would deliberately try and hurt a player, even if they were winning 100 nil, they would still try and injure a player, because they can... Thugs in a Rugby strip...
Jayne Louise bring back the days of Willie John McBride and the 99 call - one for all and all for one 😆
the way he ran i always felt he would've been a useful 200m track runner.
It was like playing Lomu all over again. You dnt even need the magic offload if you got Cullen. Just run rings around the field😆🤣😂👌
Nice touch
Also shows how good a distributor Mehrts was
You missed his try when he kicked it from within his own goal line
You the man 🇳🇿
Dirty bok trying to foot trip at the start 🤦🏽♂️
Right there with Jonah and Rupeni as top 3 athletes ever to not only come out of nz but probably southern hempisphere. Guy was a freak, never been another playa yet with the balance, speed, footwork and strength of Cullen. Camera doesnt do him justice, he was just unreal and so effortless. Wish they had shown that 95 hong kong sevens try against fiji where he stepped a couple in his own in goal and ran thru team for 90 meter try lol.
That move at 2:23 was just brilliant
2:21 best rugby code ever...coming from an Irish
💕When ever I have Rugby withdrawals I watch this guy and the Maori All blacks Haka when it was lead by Hosea Gear who I think was incredibly under rated 🏉
Cullen, Lomu, Mehrtens, Fitzpatrick, Brooke, Bunce, Umaga, Marshall, Spencer.....
All big names. I wish I started watching rugby sooner so I could've seen them in action first hand.
First 13 seconds and 14 tries a last minute slide tackle
Christren Cullen what a ledgend one of the best alblacks Ive ever seen ,
Hard to pick a time when the allblacks were at their peak. But the Cullen era is surely arguably the best.
Cullen is the best fullback of all time. The fact that he made these plays against the best opposition makes it all the more convincing.
Monday - January 18, 2021.
Ran on to the ball. Also picked the gap.
He glided across the field
Wow. What a player
He was genius. Nice to watch.
My favourite ever fullback, what a player, gutted when he had that bad injury, he was never the same player after it, same as Michael Jones...
Cullen in his day was simply out of this world.
Looking back... how did we ever manage running around with a tent for a jersey??
He was so quick and streamlined that they even named a racehorse after him. True!
Magnificent
By far the best ever to wear the 15 jumper
His carrier took a turn when he was tackled by Fijian viliame Satala....
Why John Hart played him at 13 during the ‘99 RWC, and why John Mitchell left him out of the 2003 RWC squad are two things I don’t understand. I would have just played him at fullback and give him licence to run.
Fullback 🐐
Is that Xhaka at 0:13 ?
I saw an interview with a Munster fan about signing Christian Cullen. He said “ I can guarantee you, his money will be no good in this town “. So I guess he was happy.
Legend
It was a sad day for New Zealand Rugby, when he left to play for Ireland, Dam he was that good they even named a Race Horse after him.
What this video shows is how damn good zinzan brook was in putting Cullen in space.
