- THIS MOTORCYCLE ROAD TRIP WAS ONE FOR THE AGES!!!!
I rode the tail of the dragon at NIGHT! My first time ever riding the tail of the dragon and it did not disappoint. The tail of the dragon has 318 curves in 11 miles and i didnt think that I would make it. The tail of the dragon has many crashes daily so being able to ride the tail of the dragon before most people come is better. It was a great road trip to ride the tail of the dragon but its definitely a bucket-list ride. Its not for the faint of heart as well. Great video. I love that area of the country. The views on the Cherohala are far superior to those of the Dragon, your friends did right by you showing you the Skyway and the falls first. I too was really nervous the first time I did the Dragon but it is overhyped. That being said, it's still a bucket list ride. The Blue Ridge Parkway is another great ride with outstanding views you should check it out someday.

That area of the country is so beautiful. I had the chance to ride it 2 years ago, it was breathtaking. The falls are a favorite of mine and the skyway was probably the most beautiful road I have had the chance to ride. I want to go back, I rode the dragon 3 times the last time out, one of those being in the darkness. I too am from a place where everything is basically flat riding and straight roads. These are absolute destination rides for me and a total change of my normal riding. Good to see you had safe travels.

Compared to most of our roads in Australia, the Dragon is a brilliant, well engineered smooth as silk piece of tarmac, the road isn’t dangerous, but many of the users of it are 😎👍

@@JustGKue When you learn to ride the Dragon, as I have, it forces you to learn a lot about yourself or get burned in the attempt and realize how poor your riding skills actually are.
It's like trying to learn Tai Chi or Wing Chun. Your have to start off small and slow, perfecting your technique and going faster, much faster, later. Try to go too fast, too soon, will ruin your technique and you'll wind up on the mat with a lesson to over come.
The bigger and more powerful bike that you have, the more dangerous the Dragon is.
I learned to ride her on a 92 Ninja 500 back in the day.
When I go back, that beast will have more to teach me, I am sure.

I'm gonna make this real simple. I live in SE NH w/a bunch of winding back roads w/tight turns. You can either ride or you can't. I rode to work one night and developed an Impact Cataract that made me legally blind in my right eye. I rode home on winding back roads at 2:30 am, blind in my right eye, to go to the ER, on my 79' KZ1000 ST. I bought a new 21' Vulcan 1700 Vaquero last year, and had to learn how to ride again because of the different handling characteristics. I've been riding for over 17yrs, 2 different 79' KZ1000 ST's, a 79' GL1000, and the Vaquero. I rode dirt bikes as a teenager, I'll be 57 this July, I've always had an affinity for driving & shooting. Former Armored Cav, drove tanks, APC's, Jeeps, 5 ton trucks, various cars & trucks. Never assume anything regarding other drivers or conditions.

While not the same as riding it on a motorcycle, every spring about 200 MINI Coopers descend on the Dragon, "MINIs On The Dragon" is a rite of passage for a MINI owner. We love whipping our little cars around the twisties, (As we call them) spending time in the mountains with friends, and raising money for the local community. I'm glad your free spirit got to experience this ride. I have much respect for the bikers that navigate the Dragon 🙏Thank you for sharing, glad you were safe, and happy your bike was easily repaired so as to not to ruin your trip.

I just found this video! Awesome! I love your writing style. I subscribed. It's my dream to ride the Dragon as part of a road trip. I started riding in 1992. I'm 59 and still riding. Maybe next year I'll go on a trip like that, if I could get the time off. Also, thank you for wearing proper protective gear! I'm an ER doctor. I've seen it too many times, no gear leads to terrible injuries. People think they won't crash, or road rash won't be that bad. Anyone could crash. I crashed my Honda Magna V45 on the highway 30 years ago while riding from San Diego to the Grand Canyon solo. I was well protected by gloves, leather jacket, jeans, boots, full-face helmet. I was lucky, though. I had just stopped and donned the jacket before my surprise loss of control. I'll never forget. Things happen. It's best to be ready.

It was a nice ride and narration. But I would encourage you to do it in Sep/Oct during fall and in the morning / AM time because as thrilling as it is, it is challenging too and always better to do it when the visibility is at it's best. I was there last year during that time and the ride was amazing.

Man the Dragon gets all the press but the Cherohala Skyway and the Blue Ridge Parkway are in my humble opinion far more enjoyable rides out that way and you dont have to dodge the racers that drift into your lane sometimes on the dragon. I’ve ridden the tail in daylight probably 150-200 times. Just last week I rode it for the 1st time at night, in full darkness. You think you know a road, but the dark there is blacker than anywhere, and your headlights dip into curves, concealing everything beyond 15-20 ft in front of the bike. You lose track of where you are on the map, what comes next. New fear unlocked. And overcame. Great stuff! Try it in daylight next time!
Exactly! I rode it 3 times total twice in the Day and once at night. Sometimes you can't see ANYTHING! lol
