Let’s all be honest, all u need is a pack of senkos and some hooks…maybe a sinker.
Ignore the fact that I have 47 tackle boxes 😂 24 rods n reels. Beats buying beer.
Agree, but Id pass on the sinkers & throw a nedrig when the waters too deep for a senko.
Don't drag good ol beer into this...
I learned this to be true a ways back….and too late like most folks.
My learning moment was watching the charter boats lure and line inventory….
Let’s face it? They have some of the most basic and repetitive gear in the world…and they slay the fish! That’s why people go on charters! 😂
So I went to the less is more model a ways back, and haven’t looked back!
Greta advice and I found it to all be very insightful and lines up with my experiences!
God bless all!
Tight lines!
But where's the fun in that? Tackle and fishing gear is the biggest thing about fishing, no fun in buying 1 rod n reel set & using the same couple lures. Get's boring pretty fast
Ole buddy of mine in town here uses black or red shad 7" to 10" inpower bait worm most of the year
Mr. N.Q. your tooooooo late. I have a tackle shop in my boat. 19 Skeeter 46 rods 400 crankbaits ...A packed compartment of plastics w/ hooks and weights. I have enough tungsten in my boat to sink it. Lol
My boat went from 55mph to 45 mph. It's fully loaded, packed compartments, with only me in it!
🤣🤣
My boat's too small for all my gear 😅 it would sink it 😂 that's why I just built a 24x9ft shed last summer... the wife thinks our basement is huge now 😂
At least you can carry all your tackle. All of my tackle would sink your boat.
My boat is a leaky whitewater raft 😂😂😂 need to repair it once and for all
I needed this video about 10 years and $500k ago 😅
Only $500k...rookie numbers! 🙂
Fish a season walking the banks and you learn to be incredibly efficient with what you lug around for tackle
Yes, exactly! I have a large tackle box in the truck, and fill a plano box from the cab and walk down.
Yep, if it doesn't fit my small backpack, it doesn't get used lol
I'm a bank only bass fisherman (hopefully not for long) I bring 3-4 tackle boxes with a big soft plastics bag and always have 4-5 rods. A bit overkill but I want to have about everything I need on standby
@@PNW_AnglingAdventures Lol good one bro.
@@canadiangemstones7636 😂
Surprised you didn't mention those stupid monthly subscription boxes. Same baits that you'd walk right past at walmart all of a sudden get put in a box together and "wow...great value, look at all you get!"
I stopped getting those a year ago. I had enough rubber craws to fill up a couple tackle boxes .
I gave most of the stuff away for birthday presents
Yup! And they throw in some stupid stickers as if it's some big deal...😂
The only ones I trust are the mystery tackle boxes. All the other ones seem to be rip offs
Funny you say this i just had a scam pop up that if you bought these stupid sticker decals basically you could become a bait tester. I think they just realllly wanted to get rid of those overpriced stickers 😂
Great tips. I have had the same braid for many seasons. I just reverse spool onto another reel so the end that was buried in the spool becomes the leader end on the new spool.
I’m not fishing for a living, but I back a 2500 reel with about 100 yards of Walmart mono. That leaves 100+ yards of braid on a spool and always keeps it fresh. I don’t measure that accurately, but that is how I handle it. I bought a 1000 yards of mono for $1.50 this week to back with on clearance.
@@unappropriate1 I typically use about 35 yards of mono and 100 yards of braid. That allows me to spool 3 reels with one 300 yd spool of braid.
Yes - So about 5 years ago, I rolled my kayak as a newb out there and lost a whole lotta tackle I had for YEARS. While it "hurt" to loose it all to the abyss, it was a blessing disguise. Now I have just '5' 3600 trays with all I'll ever need to fish for all the warm-water species I target. I stopped completely looking at stuff on the pegs and the shelves at the retailers. What I have works and I just replenish as needed. Just enough an no more! It works for me!
Tether your gear next time. 😬 Thankfully i haven't rolled yet, been close and didn't tether my gear either! I should take my own advice 😂
@@JesusChrist_IsTruth-LoveForALL Everything has been getting locked down. I had "heard" all about "leash it or lose it" and, well, just wasn't there yet (total newb thing). Ask how may prescription sun glasses my wife lost in the wind... UGH! She's all careful now too! God bless ya!
@@freddysflyz hahahaa!! Honestly I still have yet to tether my stuff when I go, but I really need too, especially now that we're talking about it! I almost flipped over a few times losing my gear! 😬 Have fun out there man! ♥️ from Southern Cali! 🙏
@@JesusChrist_IsTruth-LoveForALL PLEASE don't learn the hard way, stay safe yourself out there, and soak up the fun too! Coming from the other side in North NJ! 😍🐟🐟🐟
@@freddysflyz 💪🙏💪
Nothing beats time on the water. I rather have 10 hours fishing with 2 small boxes of tackle than 10 large boxes of tackle and 2 hours of fishing. Skip the huge assortments of tackle, and use that time spent shopping or researching to fish instead and money saved on gas, food, etc so you can get out on the water as much as possible.
Bass only see a spectrum of all colors. Crazy detailed baits are an absolute hustle. Although I’m a Megabass freak so I’m really talking to my self haha.
Love my Megabass jerkbaits.
Ain't nothing wrong with having a cool collection 🤙
Ya when your into it like we are details matter to us. They aren't just lures their works of art we are proud of owning and fishing. Right 👍
Not including the shitty hooks on mega bass products. It’s a shame we pay so much for there products and can’t put on a half decent hook
@@firewater652 let me correct you. There outbarb hooks are amazing. Just can’t use an overpowered setup like to heavy of line combined with to stiff a rod. The Megabass Vision 110 jerkabait was really designed to use 8# fluorocarbon although I run 10# but also on the P5 110 stick that’s soft enough to not bend out the hooks. Gotta watch your rod strength if you’re bending the hooks out. The hooks on the DeepX300 and Deep Six I’ve never had an issue with either
I love wasting money on fishing tackle.
Me too! Lol😂
Before i go into my local tackle shop i support the internal conversation that happens is as follows (i spend so much money in this store, welp about to spend some more)
With over 70 bagillion bait colors, contrasts and styles it can be extremely overwhelming for any new angler. I’ve spent countless hours just sifting and weeding through so much it makes my brain hurt just thinking about it. It’s always good to get back to basics and just catch fish. Keep up the great content!
For me, i either go out to catch fish(go with my confident baits) or im out to practice something new. It helps me decide easily what tackle to use that day. I usually dont blame what im throwing, i assume im not presenting it properly.
Love it! Since I'm an OLD (70+) kayak fisher, these tips are Fan-BASS-Tic! Thanks!
Roger, The Smiling BassHole
Great stuff! Simplifying tackle selection frees up your mind to think about things that are more important than insignificant (most of the time) color/weight/size differences in your baits.
My zebco 33 trigger micro and a walmart crappie jig had me within 6 oz of a state record large mouth last year. You don't need expensive or fancy equipment to fish
Great tips. A few bottles of dipping dye colors can save money too. For hard baits, I buy many light-colored baits and can color them as needed with a few brushes of a Q-tip. If you want to change the color, it comes off with 90% alcohol.
Great advice. Not just to save some money but to keep things more organized and neat. Also easier to find when you need.
Thanks Nathan. I’m going through my tackle to thin it out and also to send some of this stuff to my son who lives in a different state. Great summary of what I actually need
Great break down! Thank you.
I have minimal rods and reels, but was a lure junky, even though I use the same dozen or so lures 95% of the time. With new lure prices lately, I've broken that silly habit!
I have 4 rods. 5 Plano box's and that is it. I catch quite a few fish. Great advice. 😊
Great channel. Tons of information for newer guys like me. Thanks brotha'.
AFTER OVER 60 YEARS OF BASS FISHING, ALL BAITS WORK, SOME ARE JUST BETTER THAN OTHERS, IF YOU YRAVEL A LOT, BRING A WIDE VARIETY OF BAITS, ESPICALLY DIFFRENT TYPES OF SOFT PLASTICS, RODS ,, USE WHAT IS COMFORTABLE FOR YOU
Fantastic! Well done Nathan. Very pertinent information.
I appreciate your honesty !!!!!
That was solid advice. Great content & well taught.
Great video. Super helpful!
This is my kind of video and the reason I subscribed. Thanks Nathan for your honesty!
Thanks!
THANK you so much, Nathan! Better late than never - seems to me, collecting tackle is an addiction 🤣 ! So I start selling a lot of my collection . . . 😂
Excellent advice thank you
Love the idea. Although I slightly vary in some of the "down the middle" stuff you use I do agree that finding that all around for your specific fishing is ideal and sadness a ton of money! I use 6 and 10 lb test leader for spinning, 12 lb test on bait caster, and 50 lb braid on other bait caster. Thanks for the awesome video!
As someone who fell down that rabbit hole. Great video my man
Live and learn nobody ever told me how to streamline my tackle good advice solid information I’m subscribing !
Hard to beat a simple plastic worm
In the south the plastic 🪱 is in my hand always. It's the one life a largemouth bass must strike. Love it
Great video Nathan thanks 👍
Great video. Most of the crap we buy never catches fish. But it’s great for the fishing tackle suppliers. I’m of the same mindset now and only buy what I know will catch fish.
Great video. Thank you
Timely. This is exactly what I have been doing the last few days. I have narrowed down to one medium spinning rod for Ned and wacky. One MH for casting with a flouro reel and a braid reel. I too got tired of too many options and too many rods. I have really narrowed down my tackle to what techniques I actually enjoy, not what the pros do.
I agree. I have gotten way too much tackle for how often I fish in the last few years. I need to cut down on it 👍
I'm new to this and based on what I'm doing I assumed I would have far less tackle eventually, not more. I don't really know what works and what doesn't so I have lots of stuff to try out. Thanks for simplifying the line weights, looking for advice on youtube can get expensive and confusing.
I’m a huge 6th sense fan. I did the box to “build” my arsenal. Now I’m ready to sell everything because I paint my on stuff. Working on getting more molds for my soft plastics as well. Very nice video!
Can’t wait to hear you bought some balsa wood and put a knife to it too. 😂😂
@@Boethius411 😂Not going that far. Just painting. I wasn’t trashing 6th sense. I love their baits.
@@clintjenkins13I paint my own baits too. Last March I beat my own PB twice hours apart on a spy bait and a jerkbait I painted.
I’ve definitely had some good bites off my own custom work! That’s awesome to hear
I haven't bought a new plug in over two years. I usually just fish with plugs that are painted baitfish colors like bluegill and perch and only two colored Senkos. One of them is pink and I don't remember the name of the other except it is brown with flakes. They are both only three inches.
I have one 6.5 foot bait caster that I fish all that you just said. And I've never used braid.
I started with straight fluorocarbon, but now I use braid with a 6ft leader.
Well said Nathan. About 5 years too late for me though. I'm one that buys way too much. Like hooks 1-3-5 plus drop shot and wacky. Then I have to jam it into my kayak. Gonna start to pare it down. Thanks.
I only keep a lot of soft plastics and various crankbaits because i mostly fish summer and fall night fishing. Lots of spro rats, topwater cranks, wake type stuff and large dark soft plastics. Frogs too.
I really only use one lure where I fish, Rapala, perch colorway, floating. The only bad thing about only using one lure is that it hurts a little extra when you lose to a snag.
Awesome info
I’m in eastern pa. My goal this year is to not buy any rods, reels or new tackle ( only replace when I lose something). All my tackle including soft plastics fits in a bass pro super magnum tackle bag. This includes 2 3700 deep planos for the musky lures I bring. U bring 4 bass and 2 musky setups. I don’t own a spinning reel. 🤷🏻♂️ Really going to try to simplify my approach this year.
I just buy old fashioned mono tippet spools at Walmart.
I fish dirty water/grass lake mostly so 12 lb tippet.
I do have a couple of rigs for a clearer water deep water lakes.
I have 27 rods and reels, but let’s cut the nonsense. Nearly all freshwater fish (outside of the giants like 60 pound flatheads) can be fished with a 6 1/2 to 7 foot medium weight fast action spinning rod spooled with 8 pound mono. A selection of 4 or 5 different worms, some jigs, a few swim baits, some hooks, some weights, a few spinners and spoons, and some slip bobbers and you can fish for bluegills, crappie, bass, walleye, perch, channel cats, trout, pike, and everything else.
You forgot livescope
Wow, this was quite an informative video. Thank you.
I’ll have to watch a few more and see if I want to subscribe.
Thank you!
wow your a lefty . Doing the same all my spools will now be just 15lb 8 strand braid and one rod with 30lb braid for the beach or big live baits
After 2 season i turn the braid so then i get the fresh side out. If you have loose some line i put on some more monofilament as backing.
Great video. Which I had seen this years and thousands of dollars ago😂
Great video
I've always looked at it as not only A bass fishing passion but Also an awesome hobby of collecting hundreds of brands colors and styles of crank baits Just like having a crank bait museum that will eventually be handed down to my son🙂
So true on the terminal tackle... I got a bait mafia coffin 3700 and realized I still didn't have enough slots for every single hook in each specific size. And I just thought wait do I even use all of this stuff? Do I need to bring EVERY size EWG 1/0-5/0 on my kayak?
Nope.
Wish this video would’ve come out 2 weeks ago. 😔. I’m fairly new to the sport, so after watching quite a few videos on what would need to fish at different times of the year, I ended up spending a good amount of money on two/three of everything. This is the video I was really looking for a few weeks ago. Just what a guy needs to get a good start, not so much, what the color of the water is, multiplied by the temperature, divided by the depth etc. 😆
Should have watched this before I went down the tackle and gear rabbit hole 🤣
To be completely honest the only lure I "need" is small Mr Twister jigs. 2nd would be top water lures of just about any kind because strikes on the surface are so exciting.
I worked in the tackle industry for over 15 years, retail and wholesale. I can honestly say that most lures on the market are made to catch fishermen first and fish second. Most of the lures I use on a daily basis are probably over 30 years old, and they still work fine. They look and sound different than a lot of today's baits. Most of my rods and reels are from the same time frame. I have no use for a gear ratio higher than 6:1, and most of my reels are slower than that.
Fantastic content 👌 👏 👍
Set up a simple laptop bag. Between fly boxes and 3500 & 3700 slims. Grab and go
I'm a bank only bass fisherman (hopefully not for long) I bring 3-4 tackle boxes with a big soft plastics bag and always have 4-5 rods. A bit overkill but I want to have about everything I need on standby
Honesty is the best policy
I fell into this trap as well. I used to fish Southeast freshwater lakes exclusively and had all the tackle - hard baits, crankbaits, plastics, worm binders, etc...
Now that I fish saltwater exclusively, I found that the tackle needed is completely different and I don't need as much. I almost never use hardbaits, just topwater hardbaits for fishing the flats and mangroves. Half of my fishing is with live bait and the other half is with plastics, jigs etc.. Almost all is terminal tackle.
All the treble hooks rust really fast here around saltwater. I can go fishing with a single fishing bag holding 4 Plano containers.
A guide told me a long time ago to challenge myself and try to go fishing with only 2 lures. I took one crankbait and one jig and went fishing. The purpose of this challenge is to remove the dependency on all the tackle and rely more on your skill and knowledge. It works! I was catching fish even in the dead of winter!
Think about the species, the conditions and only take what you need. Practice this target fishing and you will never look back.
OMG, the best video for what fits my ideal style even though I am a noob and just spent a ridiculous amount of money on tackle🤦🏻♂️ Thank YOU!!!! Also, do you do saltwater fishing. I need you ti dissect salt water for me like you just did fresh. PLEASE..!!!!
Hello I'm a budget kind of parson I love and enjoy saltwater pier fishing to catch pacific mackerel fish eat catch and cook and I always buy inexpensive stuff and my tackle boxes are always full of lures like metal lures for any species of fish and different lures it's always good to have 4 or more tackle boxes with variety of fishing lures in saltwater pier fishing you never know what the fish will bite because saltwater fish are predictors for me it's 1/0 or 2/0 maby 3/0 and yes plenty of drop shot hooks and weights and soft plastic baits
Love you videos and how you think about the beginners from rods, reels, baits and lures and line and hooks. Watch video you post. Thank you
When the pandemic hit, everyone and their mother was out fishing so I cut back on fishing and spent more time golfing. However, I still purchase tackle every year when it's on sale because I plan to spend more time fishing when I (hopefully) retire in about 5 years. The price of tackle is getting crazy so want to get it cheaper now rather than waiting.
Great information but even you went over board. The biggest thing to fishing is to understand what, what season and where you fishing. With that knowledge you can catch a lot of fish with about 5 pieces of tackle and 2 rods
My go to lure is Rapala shallow rap never fails me
Bass are reaction strikers, there is no need to have more than 1 or 2 lures. They'll hit sh!t on a hook if you can make it stick.
In our local lake (8300 acre) and river we have Gills,Crappie,whitebass,white/yellow perch,,fallfish,suckers,rockabss,Lg/Sm bass, striper, carp, channel cat, lakers, walleye, musky, tiger musky, pike, pickerel, trout (from stocked tributaries) and maybe a few others I'm forgetting about. They just recently found some Flathead in a shocking a couple years ago.
I have one bag with 6 3700's stuffed with plastics and lures for Crappie and other panfish,a small bag with 4 3600's for everything else and a Aventik pouch for my cat rigs.I don't target bass I did when I was a teen, but there's more challenging and a heck of a lot better tasting fish in the water than a stinking bass. They're the 2nd easiest fish to catch, right behind gills an sunnies.
I dont try new lures anymore, just restock them if I'm running low😊
Twister jigs for smallies have always slayed THEM
Totally agree I would rather have a stack of baits I know work and just fish then to try to get a perfect bait for every situation learned this with spinner baits there were a couple years where I experimented with tons nowadays I pretty much exclusively just buy two color patterns of war eagles and just go out and fish
50+ years of fishing . My tackle boxes alone filled my full sized pickup bed 1 1/2 times when I moved it .
I have 72 fishing rods .
That what happens when you go to sporting goods stores that are going out of business . I have not bought any tackle in 12 years so far . But its nice when you get the tackle for over 75% off . Most poles are regularly $300 or more , i paid $20-50 each . My favorite pole cost me a big $10 .
It hurts my pride to the point I shake my head and say no you’re wrong, but if I really think about it, I went fishing today with 20 pounds of gear and I could fit all the lures I used to catch fish in my pocket lol
Here in Florida I run 20 lbs mono or floral Berkeley on all of my rods but every one has their own opinion plus I fresh water and salt water fishing
I just started bass fishing and have a bunch of stuff but not one bass haha, but I'm also in southern california Anaheim) so bass fishing sucks close by
Nice job simplifying colors down to a muddy water and clear water option... Where does white fit in there? That seems to be the most popular swimbait/fluke color by far. Where does that fall in your system?
He'd be dipping into your box for a white soon as you pulled 3 fish out 😂 6 miles up the lake on big water with 10 species of fish and you just started fishing. Dude only brought one rod and a couple lures.
I fish on a budget. I can honestly say that the 16 piece inline spinners pack on Temu for $13 is the best thing ever! I got a couple rapala’s and a buzz bait. I don’t use anything else. I’ve bought the jigs I’ve bought the soft plastics and everything else, now I just have my small kit and that’s it. It all fits in a fanny pack it’s so small to carry. I only stream fish, I don’t lake fish anymore.
Got a link?
I have 2 rods 1 ultralight that im take everything from persh to trouth and pike whit and 1 bigger for everything else salmon sea trouth and what have you and one tacklebox . You have a drag on your real use it 😉
Ive caught some very large fish on an ultralight, but have almost as many. When a 5-10 pound fish dives deep into a bed of weeds it's game over on an ultralight with 4 lb test.
My rods abue Garcia, Shakespeare, Penn, lews
Me seeing this video after spending roughly 300$ on terminal tackle lmao not includong the pole net and rod 😅 and getting waders soon and also a fishing blow up dingy and anchor amd paddle and life vest for cheap boat fishing lmao gonna be a thrill
Nathan, no white/pearl/bone color baits (hard or soft plastics)?
You can add those in!
My grandmother used to fish she gave me 50 rods and 90 boxes full of new stuff.
Fishermen are just like Golfers. They see a Bass Pro Shop / Edwin Watts catalog and instantly lose their minds.🤩
I'm guilty as sin when it comes to toting around excess tackle and rods/reels... I've been getting better at cutting back but still have a little to much.
Me too
Thanks for the help, im starting and as 24 y/o female I feel a little intimidated because I don't know any women that fish nor do I have a clue what to buy. Im trying to figure out what woild be good for fishing the Niagara river by Buffalo NY. Your video helped me quite a bit especially since I would be starting on a budget. If there's more reccs plz lmk, I need all the help I can get! THANK YOU ☺️💖
Any spinning reel/rod combo with a beetlespin lure. 1/32oz or 1/16oz. Will be tough to cast since it’s so light, but will catch stuff guaranteed. Easy retrieve, very few hang ups since it’s designed to bounce off of obstacles, works on many species, and best of all super cheap.
Keep it Simple....nowadays its crazy how much non-sense stuff there is out there just for bass fishing. I was reading a bait description by a bait making company and the new words they are currently adding to describe their new soft plastics are FFS and "video game bait". LOL
I have bought alot of tackle. Most of the stuff I've gotten was on sale though.
NO! I wanna have all the lures. They are like grown up Pokemon, you have to catch them all😂
I guess I was too late on the video. I started pouring plastics/lead in 1994. I started with a few silicone molds, a Lee pot, and supplies to make my own stuff. It's addictive. I now have 389 CNC molds, with 20 being custom and around 50 lead molds. It's rewarding when you make your own stuff. I'd like to possibly downsize one day, but it's hard to sell a mold when you have your name engraved on the molds. My son is 7. He helps me out bagging when I have big orders. Eventually, he'll get everything. He'll be dealing plastic worms by middle school. 🤣🤣
I have duplicates of lures because my dumbass is guaranteed to lose one or two to a rock or a log lol
Them crawfish crank baits get hit every time in the ole muddy water creek by my house.
Yaa I am in the floating tackle shop as well but agree 100% I don't use 90%percent of it and am in process of getting some tackle out
Surprise you are not trying to sell me more lures. Joking aside, you are correct. More lures less fish and less money in the bank.
Brother you cant stop me this is like a gambling addiction buy the lure throw the lure and see if it catches fish then repeat with new lure
Actually pretty cool vid
