** Sept 3 Update: An RCMP officer emailed me after watching this vid. Him and his colleague tried to find a law that prohibits the use of helmet lights in BC, Canada. They could not find such law therefore it is LEGAL in BC, Canada. Disregard my statement at 6:36 saying it is illegal there. **
"Are LightMode helmets legal?" - I get asked this all the time so hopefully this video can shed some light on the matter. If you ride with a LightMode helmet, please share your police encounter stories, if any. If you've never had a police encounter with your LightMode helmet, please share as well.
Q: Are these water resistant?
A: Yes.
Q: Will it work with my Icon, Shoei, HJC, etc.?
A: Yes, any motorcycle helmet. You can print a PDF template to test fit before you buy: Printable templates: lightmodehelme...
Q: What colors can I get these in.
A: Previously, distinct colors. Now you get all the colors in one kit with the new Night Shift (link at the very top).
Q: Can you ship to X country?
A: Yes, we ship worldwide. Free shipping to USA and Canada.

Helmet lights should be encouraged as a safety measure. It makes you more visible to other people on the road. There really is no difference between having those lights and reflective material on your helmet.

Though there has to be some regulations surrounding this because some lights can obstruct vision thereby possibly being the cause of accidents.

I've been a LEO for 16 years, I can tell you that it's a grey area because if you have the lights flickering that's a ticket for unlawful operating of emergency lights, if it's flashing blue or red that's impersonation of a LEO and that's a felony.
So it depends on both sides.
Police should be encouraging these lights, they increase visibility of riders to other motorists and pedestrians, red and blue LED's aren't copyrighted by LEO's, the company could circumvent that altogether by just making them RGB and programable to any desired colour which would sell more product, add more variety and alleviate concerns by LEO's that the lights are impersonating LEO/emergency response lights.

Cop shootings in the US are blown out of proportion, certainly there is always room for improvement but to suggest that is the US's biggest problem is a bit silly.
I would argue our biggest problem stateside is political polarization and media sensationalism. Bit of an anecdote so take it as you will:
A family member than ran a dog rescue group got slammed on media for stealing a dog because he was a bad, awful, evil person when in reality it was a false report by neighbor and ended up slipping through the cracks (I dont remember the specifics).
The media never apologized for lying about him, they made their buck off ruining his life and his business failed because of it. After all who wants to do business with a guy who would steal a families dog, people that knew him did their best to clear his name but word of mouth only reached so far.
While the scale is off I think media of every level is like this in the US, rushing a story for a quick buck and assuming the worst of people.

If the cop has to ask that question, it means he does not know either. No need to sweat.
Many many places (don’t know about Canada) it would be illegal to have red and blue lights visible from the front of the vehicle, as those are reserved for emergency vehicles. Technically it’s blue light emitting anywhere on the vehicle, and red lights emitting, or projecting forwards from the vehicle. But every municipality will be different. Rarely enforced, but it gives cops a freebie to pull you over.
My first thought was, 'of course it's legal for it helps drivers see you in the dark.' I like the Canadian breath testing system:
"Have you had any alcohol tonight?"
"No"
"Have a great day"
They ask you question to smell if there are any alcohol breath from your mouth. If they didn’t smell anything. They let you go immediately. It’s the smelling that is important not question.
I doubt they could really get a good enough whiff based on an interaction like that alone
Edit. Yes people have already told me now that it is stronger than I imagined. Please stop replying
@@evasmojang trust me. Try speaking to someone that took enough alcohol. You will definitely smell it. If you can’t. They definitely is within limits. Please don’t drink too. You won’t be able to smell a thing if you’re filled with alcohol
@@lawryteos2230 Huh I didn't realize it was that strong.
@@evasmojang It can definitely be a strong smell if someone is intoxicated enough. Growing up with an alcoholic father, I didn’t even have to be right next to him, just in the same room, and I could smell the alcohol coming off of him. Sometimes he didn’t even have to speak in order for me to smell it. Those officers were DEFINITELY close enough to smell alcohol on someone’s breath if they were significantly intoxicated. If you watch a lot of DUI bodycam videos, it’s extremely common for cops to put in their report that they detected a strong smell of alcohol on the person, which in addition to the person’s reckless driving, was what gave them grounds to do sobriety tests and ultimately make an arrest.
Alcohol has a very pungent and strong odor when a person is heavily intoxicated, and as the other person mentioned, the intoxicated person is almost always completely unaware of it. In addition to seeing if they could smell any alcohol on a person’s breath, these officers doing these traffic stops are also asking questions to see if they can detect any changes in speech patterns (like slurring of words) or altered mental states. They are also going to be watching the individual’s eyes to see if they notice any ocular abnormalities caused by alcohol. When properly trained, there’s actually a lot that they can discern from that one brief and simple interaction/question, and seeing if they can smell any alcohol from the person is one of those things.

Yeah... and on video too as evidence.
In some places lanesplitting is perfectly legal without a speed limit tied to the rule but I dont think that is a thing in Canada USA and Australia I am very sure there is a speed limit for lanesplitting I think here in Australia you can do it if you are travelling under 30kph or 18mph
Do you need an indicator on when stopped? Last I checked you ONLY need an indicator on when you need to show other drivers your intention on the road I suggest you look up your local road laws mate and if you are gonna respond to me at least stop deleting your comments I still get the notification and can see everything you type its getting rather old either say your peace and keep it up or shut your mouth
James Quinn James Quinn lmao the comment was specifically for you, of course you saw it. Didn’t want to drag on the chat feed. And did you not watch the whole video when he was crossing multiple lanes? That is a scenario in which no matter you need an indicator regardless of if splitting lanes in the city is allowed. But you go ahead bud, say what you gotta say to make yourself be right. You’re just going off pure speculation.
And that’s my last piece. Arguing with people on the internet is purely for ego. I’ll let you keep this one.
I love that he left the voice crack in.... only reason I subbed. stay real dude!
So that's how they check if you drunk?
- Have you been drinking something tonight?
- No.
- Alright, drive safely.

It Will cool if the cops......well.......
@@amalgama-dette1430 yeah if they put it on their.. their... you know if the got it for their...
Exactly the cops asking him if it’s legal lol
The reason he was asking if it was legal is because if they were integrated directly into the helmet, it could potentially compromise the structural integrity of the helmet and cause it to break upon impact and not save its user.
@@skurt258 ah, because I know for a fact its illegal to display blue lights anywhere on a vehicle, and red lights facing forward. Never thought about DOT safety.

Next to the legality of the DUI checkpoints (if you haven't drank anything just comply, unless you like to cause issues), most cops during such stops are rather nice, they have no reason to be rude to you, unless you give them one.
@Egg-Roll You could lie to the police and say that you weren’t 🍷 drink driving. And they would let you go.🤔 I can’t see the logic in that. What’s the point of these stops?
@@Haroon5 lying only works I'm guessing if you've not drank anything in a while at which time it's likely out of your system or under the limit, I used to work with a drunk unless they took shots when no one was looking which is doubtful (less breaks I guess) their breath stunk for hours. Chances are if you're DUI worthy drunk you're not thinking enough to cover up your tracks so you're car likely would hint it if your breath didn't.
I'm sure a few can successfully manage the lie to a cop, but over all as much of a inconvenience and potential legality with them it's possibly the best and fastest way of getting DUI drivers off the street. Maybe not with criminal charges but tickets and points, and enough of those will keep them of the road (hopefully). CZcams is full of DUI videos, so was cops tv show last time I saw it, some of them are quite funny to see as well.
Oh reason for fast reply is I conveniently picked up my phone 😅
@Egg-Roll You sure did reply swiftly. Sometimes replies take years to come lol. By which point you have forgotten what you asked. 😁 But good sensible explanation that actually makes sense. Thanks. 👍
Racist American police officers:
"Are you balck?" "No?" "Alright have a nice day"
As a person who grew up on the back of a motorcycle. This idea alone is brilliant. Bikers can be difficult to see, especially at night. Improving the visibility of bikers saves lives.
True bit I'd rather have the bike be illuminated better vs the rider. If I had the choose. But yes, either way it's great. Love my biker bros and want them to stay safe

Nah

When the Police are asking you, if you can make custom lighting for their helmet/bike/motorcade needs. Then you KNOW, you've started not only the best idea to create/sell, but a highly important one....
Police officer: "Is it legal?"
The guy with the helmet: "I don't know man, you tell me"
He was asking for the helmet. Sometimes helmets may look outside legal, but inside they are not
Yeah here in the states, a helmet has to be DOT certified to technically be legal. If it does not have the DOT sticker on the back, it can be considered an illegal helmet.
I've never known anyone to get a ticket though in my state. Cops generally leave bikers alone unless you're doing something really stupid and/or dangerous.
I love the part where he said "the cops love it!" (record scratch) and the VERY next scene is some highly dangerous illegal driving.
If you sand and paint, drill,or any modification that could effect the structural integral parts of your DOT helmet it is no longer a DOT rated helmet. That is what the cop was asking. "Dose it just tape on?" was verifying he didn't jeopardize his DOT rating with the lights. No DOT, Not a legally helmet.
@@gueto70 I had it explained to me, that even adding a sticker onto a helmet ***technically*** makes it illegal in the same way that you can't ***technically*** add a sticker to your DOT approved rear tail lights on your car without voiding it. police will always use discretion though if you treat them as human. (Side note: you know what helmets are WILDLY illegal? those dome caps that harley riders wear. None are DOT approved. nobody gives them problems because they're nice to everybody)
Very polite officer for saying “ I’m not interrupting am i ? “

@@GWindows3.1 that makes no sense
@@notvibevr makes perfect sense. In most states it is illegal to have blue and sometimes even red lights on any motorized vehicle. Where I live its illegal to have blue anywhere on your motorcycle and illegal to have red anywhere except the rear. So technically they could be illegal and you'd get a fix it ticket.
keeperofficial I think that rule only applies to the body off the vehicle not the helmets
“Have you been drinking tonight?”
“No”
“Ok, have a good night”
I see this comment made by many people here. I guess it must seem strange to those who don't live in Canada. I never really thought about it until now. The R.I.D.E. program tends to run more frequently during holidays/long weekends, but it can happen at any time.
as a Canadian... typical ride check. Theyre just there to get the real wasters
In the US those checkpoints aren't for drunk driver's
Bloodywasher im Not from USA or canada but when they only ask you and your Drunk you Can always say that you arent drunk right?
If you look at how they move, they LOOK like they lean in to speak over the engine noise, but they're ALSO smelling your breath and looking at your face for signs of alcohol.
The first cop had a great point. These would be great for officers on bikes with the flashing feature. Not only that, but they would look awesome at the same time.
the part I was impressed with the most is the fact the cops simply ask you if you've been drinking, instead of actually testing. Canadians, man
Thats insane to me they didnt ask him to step away from the vehicle to see his balance or nothing they just took his word for it, in my country especially in football games night thats an imediate stop and test, "when the last time u drinked?" thats it? Canadians police seems so freaking chill.

I wish they would update the motorcycle gear and accessories laws. I get having restrictions on things like lightmode helmets while driving. Like no blinking or strobing, or emergency colors. But a lot of states allow a underglow on bikes legally now because they realize it helps a lot at night. They just dont allow color changes, blinking, strobes, or emergency color combos while on the road driving. So a single color that doesnt change should be legal. Its a better option than reflective tape. I would argue that lights are less distracting as the light is visible constantly. Not like with reflective strips, which a vehicle has to have lights pointed at to work, so its more of a pop up warning. And it would be DOPE as hell to see cops using them.
From a traffic safety standpoint they SHOULD be legal and encouraged. I am a trucker - these days local - I have to drive in inner city locales at night. I have to watch for people who have dark skin, in dark clothes, and nothing reflective on. Even a single strip of this stuff would help.
