Surprising origin of Irish fair skin (far away from Ireland)

  • Irish fair skin, freckles and red hair may be a bit of an overstated cliché but there’s no doubt we are on the paler side of average when it comes to complexion.
Traditionally this has been put down to the lack of sunshine and the colder climate that comes with being part of northern Europe, on the edge of the Atlantic. The rain doesn’t help either.
Now scientists believe there may be a more dramatic explanation - that our pale appearance is inherited from just one man who lived 10,000 years ago.
What makes the theory more surprising is that this man came from a warmer climate, thousands of miles away from Ireland.
The theory has been put forward by scientists at Pennsylvania University who have been studying different skin pigmentations, and the genes that cause them.

Yes you have too protect the beautiful white skin, but Caucasians can stand the cold better than non Caucasian’s though. We can survive in colder climates better, facts. You can research this and see what I’m talking about. Also, a lot of Caucasian’s have no problem adapting to the sun. For example I will burn at fist( without the proper sunscreen) then I get very tan! Most of my Caucasian friends are same way. I have one GF who is very light ivory skin, and she sounds like you, she never can gets tan. So all Caucasian’s are different with that, but all of us can stand the cold better. It may not be comfortable, but we could last longer in it, over a non Caucasian person.

The lighter complexion of Irish and (northern euros in general) is a bit more complicated than this video suggests.
It came from Eastern European agriculturalist groups who themselves were a mix of light skinned Mediterranean farmers and blonde blue eyed hunter gatherers (funnelbeaker and globular amphora) who went on to mix with darker Indo-Europeans (corded ware)
The Neolithic farmers also did not come from North Africa lol, they merely colonised that area like they did much of Europe from the Near East.

funnelbeaker and Globular amphora were bronze age farmer cultures not Hunter Gatherer, they were the mix of Anatolian Neolithic Farmer and Western Hunter Gatherers (WHG) of Europe. Though blue eye mutation is indeed associated with WHG, the blonde hair mutation is from Ancestral North Eurasians (ANE) who formed a major admixture component in the Eastern Hunter Gatherers (who themselves were the mix of ANE and WHG). EHG formed a major ancestral compositions of Yamnaya (PIE) hence Blonde hair mutation was most probably brought in by IE migrations into rest of Europe. Lastly, the Corded Ware Culture was a result of mixture Yamnaya and Globuar Amphora. Corded Wares were the ancestor of most of the European groups today and Indo-Iranians in the East.

I'll leave some pieces of advice re Red Hair. Take care of it. Red Hair people have less hair attached to the scalp than most. They indicated that not only is white skin a mutation an not a race, it qualifies as an auto immune disease , in that it prevent the body from producing a normal amount of melanin. The Holy Bible indicates white skin is biblical leprosy.2Kings5:27. white skin is fair skin, only a fool believes that . DNA does not lie it stands in a court of law. Again this 2020 not 1620 . But celts are so fair their they must be able lighten people up pretty fast within in even a couple generations. My dad is even fairer then I am although we're still no where near as fair as these pure celts! And he's the one I get the mediterenan middle eastern black indian stuff from. He's half celtic. He has very fair almost white skin ink black hair and blues eyes. But looks mixed. We both burn easily but tan a little. My mom who has very little celtic ancestry who's jewish german and Scandinavian tans better than either of us and doesn't burn easisly like we do. Most people because my skin is so fair and I have red hair often assume I'm way more Celtic then I actually am. My daughter's skin is so white she looks like a porcelain doll. For some reason the males get either a more blondish or auburn color to their hair as they get older and only the beard stays pretty red. The females keep the bright red their whole lives. Not sure why that is. 🤷‍♂️ They also have a really high rate of having twins. My father is a twin, my sister has twins, 3 of my cousins have twins. Has anyone else with a family of pale redheads seen a surprising amount of twins consistently born? I have wondered if there might be a connection or not.

That does not sound quite correct. Modern Irish descend from Bell Beaker populations descending from Yamnaya Steppe cultures of northwestern Eurasia. They arrived in Ireland around 4500 years ago, displacing earlier Anatolian Neolithic farming populations. If the gene variant described in this video resulted in fair skin across northern Europe, it came by way of a much different route than describe here.

Yes, but before the Neolithic farmers were already settled, which is what the video refers to. about 6000 or 7000 years ago B.C. The Yamnaya brought the gene for blond hair, not fair skin, and red hair may be Neanderthal heritage.

@@Jam0023 The Yamnaya Steppe migration started only around 4500 years ago and reached western Europe sometime after that. The source for light skin and light hair was brought to Europe by the Yamnaya migration first by way of the Corded Ware culture and later the Bell Beaker culture. Much later than what is described in this video. On a side note, the gene for blue eyes originate even before the Anatolian Neolithic farmers in western Europe. The gene responsible for blue eyes was present in early, post iceage hunter gatherers around 10,000 years ago. These people were dark skinned, dark haired and blue eyed. Only sometime after the Steppe migrations into Europe did light skin, blonde hair and blue eyes all merge together in northern European populations.

it's not really surprising, since Noah's sons all came from the Mideast ( northern area, caucasus, Mt Ararat) . also we tend to NOT realize that there have always been light skinned blondes, redheads, and blue eyes in the mideast all along. Iran, Israel, etc. The Old Testament does mention Esau and David, both having redhead complexion and/ or hair.

the pale skin in Caucasians is result of 2 factors. First the change in diet, when after the end of the last ice age (approx. 10k BC), agriculture came about and slowly spread. This lead to a drastic decrease in consumption of food rich in vit D (meat, organs, eggs) in favour of grains. As Humans can either metabolise vit D from food or from sunlight, lighter skin in vit D-deficient farmers became an evolutionary advantage in northerly latitudes and quickly spread through the population. People, such as the Inuits (Eskimos) who are the most northerly living humans, remained hunter/gatherers and their skin tone didn't need to change, hence they are still relatively dark. The first modern Europeans (Cheddar man) were indeed much darker as well, but their descendants are very few (usually >5%) among modern Europeans, who are mostly hybrids of middle-eastern Neolithic farmers and Yamnaya/Indo-European pastoralists.

The title is just weird to me. Why do you say “Irish fair skin” when practically all of northern, western and eastern Europe also has a fair skinned native majority. Nothing about it is unique to Irish people. Even southern Europe too ,has plenty of pale people, but naturally, they also have a higher proportion of tan/olive skinned people as well. I mean,Saoirse Ronan the actress in your thumbnail always reminded me of Russian women I’ve seen before, bc i used to live in a Baltic country with a large Russian minority. The sandy blonde hair and ice blue eyes. She even played a Russian girl in the movie The Seagull a few years ago. Maybe you need to travel more lol

The flaw in your argument is that the Irish people are a mixture of Nordic peoples. Cork/Dublin and probably other places are Viking settlements. We don't know who was there before the Celts, or the fairness of their skins. We don't know if the Celts had fair skin among their number, or the Normans, who are essentially Vikings. Over the last one thousand years, the population of Ireland, since the invasion of the Vikings, the Normans and the accidental immigration of the Spaniards, today is widely dispersed. My own family comes primarily from Cork. In my family you were either a blond or a redhead, or, you were left by the mailman, primarily Viking Nordic. :-)
