Wonderful video. Loved your comments on discovering your new animal happiness o.- & watching Joyful skip was perfect little addition...all your kids are so sweet. :) I remember your earlier videos, as a nursing mommy in a houseful of kids with tons of laundry heaped on the couch and you struggled just to get dressed let alone chores done. But now, here you are happily beathing that early morning mist air & loving your livestock chores...so happy you have found an inner purpose.
The struggles of course are not gone but we are really having fun.
So fun! My wife has wanted goats for awhile, but I've been resistant. I've never had any goat milk, but I'm not a huge fan of goat cheese. Your videos have convinced me to give them a try and try to find a breed with good milk. Their production and land needs are way more appropriate for our family than a cow anyways. Thanks for the inspiration!
From what I have "read' Nigerians and Nubians have the sweetest and creamiest milk. It also has a lot to do with if you have a buck, handling and storage procedures and how fresh it is. Nigerians give very little milk, so you may want to consider a larger breed. They do have the highest butterfat content, so I am hoping to make butter with their milk. I have never had goat butter, so we will see how that goes!

Keep in mind you will be predisposed to female goats as goat meat is not well established in our food culture(how often do you see it at the supermarket?), so it will be difficult to justify expenses in rearing billy goats for meat.
Of course that means that you most probably will be forced to kill of most of the new born males, its a sad practice that is very difficult to avoid.
I would do some research to find any regional opportunities, like local specialty food producers, hell what you want is immigrants and their mothers cooking.
It was pretty amazing to watch that first interaction. The baby goats didn't mind her at all, it was so cute the way they followed her around. Really enjoying these new beginnings.

I'd loved to live out the rest of my life working the land.My name is George and I've been told that is Latin for farmer. My sweet goats are 'therapy' for me. I love them so much and you are so right when you say there will be good times and sad times. I think the good times always outweigh the sad though. I never look forward to dehorning our babies. I just go to the house and come back when it's over. We have one horned alpine mix goat and we've had to cut the fence to free her or either pull her head out. Not fun so we dehorn now. Enjoy your new goat and let us know what her new name is! 🐐🐐🐐🐐

This year I am working to get out of debt. Next year the homestead will be mine. I want goats, I already have chickens and turkeys. Still want rabbits and ducks. So excited about your new babies and future babies. Great job with the kids/children.. The manners comments made me smile.

You can also add diatomaceous earth to their feed, and it is a dewormer. Also, your girls are the sweetest!
just a tip i found helpful. when administering the herbal wormer individually i mix it with a small amount of water and molasses and administer with a syrine. I found it to be a more controlled and easier experience. I use the herbal wormer from fiasco farm.

We just got a 6 month old goat today, and two days ago we got a four month old and idk how to introduce them to each other the older one took his horns and tried to throw him by his belly(both males) I don’t know what to do! We may have to get rid of the older one and get our young sweet one a female his age. He’s so fragile and so sweet and loves attention and being petted and does good he hasn’t rammed me all he wants is his head scratches

I want goats, but I don't have anywhere to put them. I love my chickens and no, it doesn't seem like work, it is enjoyable to feed them and keep their water clean. When it is spring and summer we like to sit out in the back yard and watch them and talk to them. I love that each chicken has his own personality. Now, I added rabbits to my mini farm. I didn't get them for food, just for their fertilizer. They are miniature lion heads. Along with 8 cats and a dog we also have 525 sq feet of planting space. We can't afford to move to the country, so we made a country scene in our back yard.
Great use of a small space.
Maybe you could put a little plywood ramp up to the milking stand? That may make it easier for you to walk them up there and also save your back from lifting? Just a thought 😘
Once they realize the delicious grain is up there they will run and jump on the stanchion each time they are let loose. It only takes a few times for them to learn.

That dynamic was very interesting to me as well. Before now Cocoa was definitely the head goat and when it is just her and Lovey, she still is. You can see it when they eat. Lovey always defers to Cocoa.

Have you thought about a lamancha? Our oldest is almost 9 years old and gives 3/4 gallon a day. Our youger lamancha is due Feb. 15th. I am so excited.

My kids say it's just like whole cow milk but better. It is a little sweeter but it depends on their diet. We feed grass hay, alfalfa and grains. And fruit and veggie snacks and table scraps.
I think it might help to lead Honey to the end of the milking stand where she would have to jump up on the stand to get to the feed. With all of my goats it was always much harder to have them get on the stand from the middle than it was leading them to the end
Good tip! Lovey and Cocoa just hop right up, so I didn't even think of this.
It may be helpful also to have a little ramp. I have Alpines and Oberhasli and think the larger goats prefer the ramp. It worked for mine. Doing great, Bri!

Is an intro needed for kids born into the herd.
My herd queen is attacking the new mother who had twins less than 24 hrs ago.
I chose to separate the mother, a first time freshener, because I didn't know how the birth would go. I allowed brief interactions yesterday which was very gentle and loving. The herd queen and new mom are sisters. They brushed heads and licked each other. Then the herd queen ate all the grain I had out for her. Lol but that was it. Everyone else ignored her.
I had the new mom and kids sleep in her birthing stall in the barn and everyone else slept outside (where there is a shelter) like normal. There is pretty heavy predator pressure here,, so until the dam stops bleeding, I just feel very cautious. This morning I felt like it would be fine and was OK with them sorting out pecking order (within reason); mohawks, fighting, gouging with horns and the babies got caught in the mix. There was no letting up and my herd queen had a rep for being a bully. After that, I pulled my other goats and put them out in the pasture.
I'm not sure how to approach this. I don't want these tiny babies to get crushed to death, but am I making it worse by prolonging the pecking order behaviors?

Duck are great fun even though they are the messiest of poultry. They have great personalities and are quite friendly if you get some that are raised right or raise them yourself. They are easy to keep.
I don't have goats. I have always wanted them but my husband's self-employment didn't send our life adventure that way. Instead he brought me home three new hens I did not want and he expected I would get up early every morning and take care of them. I'm doing it out of love for any animal and read and ask things I need to know. I've always been that way about animals so I think that's how my husband figured I would care for them and I do a great job but I'm not happy about it because I have much chronic pain and physical problems and bending over and stooping and standing back up is one thing this job requires a lot. Also, my sleep gets messed up so maybe I just got an hour sleep and then the hens woke me up to feed and water them or whatever else they needed.

I love that Rosey's name has become Wild Rose. Seems like u picked their names just right. Now.....when the new girl became the Queen of the Barn........you called her Flopsy. I hope it stays, it suits her. Hoping you will be telling your considerations on milking preparations as you go.
Flopsy does suit her! I find that I can't call her honey or sweetheart. So I think Flopsy it will be.

I just love seeing your goat adventures. I am getting my farm set up for a couple of milk goats and I am so excited watching and learning from you. How did you find your goats 🐐 especially from people you can trust? I live in Mocksville NC. If you know of anyone in our area. I just love seeing how involved Grace wants to be with the goats. She is old enough for 4H and could really learn a lot through 4H. Also the other little girl (I don't know her name) is adorable too. Please keep the wonderful video coming.
Thank you. We got our goats through friends who were selling them. If/when we buy more I think we will be buying registered so that we can guarantee good milking lines and sell the babies for more money. Grace and Joyful are both in 4-H.! We love it!
This was a fun one. This is going to be kind of a weird suggestion but for training, look at the book Don't Shoot the Dog. It's by Karen Pryor and she has trained all kinds of things- even dolphins. That book happens to be about dogs but the theories can be used with any animal (even humans). Are you going to get one of the fancy cream separators? One of the reasons I'm hesitating about goats is because I want cream and from what I understand, their milk doesn't separate like cow milk does so you have to get a machine or something to do it.
I am not sure, but I am looking into it. I really want to have butter. However I have no idea if goat butter even tastes good! I may just have to wait until I get a cow.

I really wish people wouldn’t disbud goats. If you show goats then you have to or you’re not allowed to compete but outside of that the horns don’t have to be an issue. There’s fencing that is safe for horned animals & there’s a CZcamsr with a herd of goats where some have horns & some don’t. He says he’s never had a horn related accident or injury on his farm. When the headbutt each other they don’t use the horns, they’re mostly taking the impact on their reinforced skull plate. If you’re reading this & you aren’t sure about it then consider doing the research yourself. If you’re reading this & thinking I’m completely wrong that’s ok too, I hope you give your hornless goats a wonderful life. People don’t have to agree on everything to still be good people (I feel like the internet forgets that a lot)
Maybe lead her to the back and make her mount the stand that way. Then she can't reach the food until she is on the stand. Just an idea 😊

I don't have goats and don't know a lot about them, but I would be careful about leaving the new goat with the others until after Lovey has her kids. Seeing how Flopsy is rearing up and butting the others, I would be concerned that she could butt Lovey in the abdomen and potentially hurt her or the kids inside. Just a thought. Love your videos and I'm enjoying learning right along with you. Rose and Lady are so darned cute. Can't wait to get goats of my own some day. Keep up the great work and thank you for sharing.
I can understand your concern. I stayed down there the whole time they were figuring it out. It was all over very quickly. The new order was established and every one is peaceful now. Just a note: Flopsy never paid any aggressive attention to the babies. She just looked at them and walked away every time they were near.

I love your goats. I've had Nubians in the past and have had mixed breed Nigerian dwarf/mini LaManchas for the past 7 years. Please tell about the fish meal you use in the chicken feed. My feed store does not stock fish meal. Where do you get yours? What is the brand you get so that I can either order it myself or have my store order it?
Hi Gina. I would suggest looking at the feed brands that your feed store does carry, then visiting the company websites and looking at their whole product lines. It would be much easier to add a product from a company they already work with then add a new company.

Will there be a video?
Yes. Day after tomorrow. Occasionally we shoot two videos in a day, as we did today, so Bri can focus on school and not shoot a video. Not actually showing the disbudding first time around but will probably do a how to when we are more experienced. We just want to focus on the goats, not the camera. We explain why we and many folks make this call though.
