  • My first attempt at using the GopherHawk worked in just 19 minutes. I had also set three other ones near fresh mounds like the instructions say, but this one I set near an old hole that had a dirt plug about an inch below the surface.

Thank you for this and for N2 DAAIR's comment. I finally got my first gopher after months of trying with the Gopher Hawk. You find a small hole near the mound and make sure the soil is damp. I was always setting in dry soil so I'm very happy I finally got one. They have destroyed my yard. Thanks, George.

For best results, pull up on the top of the trap with the spring around it, not the black barrel part, when extracting. A lot of gophers are just caught by a foot and if you pull up on the black barrel you'll release them.

Thank you for the great video. It was more informative than the commercial one.

I ordered 2 of them. They should be delivered tomorrow. The moles that are tearing up my back yard lawn are in trouble!

We could use some of these at City Hall in Chicago.

I have one of these traps but can't catch a gopher. I set the trap within a foot of the mound and the gopher piles dirt around the trap. what am i doing wrong

Very effective device that a gopher can not out smart.

These will ABSOLUTELY not work in dry soil!!! FOR DAMP SOIL ONLY!!! Just something that the manufacturer doesn’t tell you.

If a hole has not been active for weeks months then theres a chance the varment is not using that hole anylonger, a fresh hole is more likely by far to snag a varment.

Very true. The thick pointy end if the stick won't make a hole in dry soil. I'll wet the lawn and try again next time.

Thanks for this comment, I was always setting in dry soil and coming up empty. I think the hold just caves in. Put about 4 inches away from a small hole in damper shady soil and FINALLY got my first gopher!

I've bought two of these traps with very little luck. I watch the CZcams videos and almost every time the gopher packs dirt around the trap. I have moved on to other traps. Currently going to try the DK-1 trap

I just caught my second gopher a couple days ago. There were more than a dozen mounds with one open hole a couple feet away. When I came back with the trap, the gopher was looking out of the hole at me but quickly disappeared. The hole was tapered down in one direction so I placed the trap about four inches away in the direction of the tunnel. Sometime during the night, the gopher was caught.

The instructions say to put the trap near a mound but that won’t work. You need to find a hole without any dirt on the surface but maybe a dirt plug below the surface. That’s where the gopher will come by without any new dirt. At least that’s how it has worked twice for me.

I had one full of dirt too. I just shook it out, reset the trap in the exact same spot and caught a shrew the next night. The key is to stomp down the tunnels and see if they get rebuilt quickly. If so, that’s the tunnel you set your trap in. I also caught a big mole the same day with a scissor trap. Scissor traps are hands down the best for surface tunnels, and the gopherhawk seems to be suited to deeper holes where the scissor trap can’t reach. Either way, I had luck with both styles in the surface tunnels.

How do we release the trapped animal from the gopher hawk?

    • @ghwellsjr
      @ghwellsjr  Před 2 lety

After you pull the trap out of the ground with both hands as I show at the end of the video, you release the animal the same way you arm it by pulling up on the bottom part while holding on to the top part. Try to shack the animal out before it totally arms so you don’t get yourself trapped, but if you do arm it, don’t touch any of the wires sticking out the bottom, instead hold the top part and hit the side of the bottom part against a solid object to safely trigger it and disarm it.

Is the problem that you don’t know how to set it up or that it’s tripping but not catching anything or that it never trips?

Perhaps when caught, pull the outer sleeve back up to release the critter underground. Although the satisfaction of seeing the result would be lost.
