  • Here you see Bunny and Stuart making a fruit cage for soft fruit in Bunny’s garden. A fruit cage need not be utilitarian, in a small garden it can pay dividends if make it attractive!
Soft fruit crops are amongst the easiest crops to grow, and they are extremely versatile in the kitchen plus most are packed with vitamins and antioxidants. Some such as blueberries, strawberries and cherries are massive magnets for birds so in order to maximise your crops it is well worth caging them.

It's lovely! Time to head out and capture myself a carpenter, LOL. Despite living in America, I love the English Garden tradition of making functional things beautiful. Animals and birds will always go after a free meal, and they have all day (or night) to figure out how to get to it. Isn't nature grand? :)

Yes when I read people’s comments from all over the world I begin to realise that our climate which most British people moan about is in fact pretty perfect!🐇

Beautiful! Please give us a better, slower look at the finished thing more often so we can admire all the work.

I thought that too. Love Bunny Guinness and her designs but sometimes the videos end quite abruptly.

Yes I am lucky in that in my line of work I get to work with a range of skilled men and it really helps you understand exactly what is possible and you establish a good working relationship with them. If you are working on a great project and you are all getting something out of it it does make it a lot more rewarding 🐇

I wanted to put the plans up but could not find. I did do a similar one for a book, I’ll contact the illustrator and see if he still has the blue print. In the end we left it out as we ran out of room. This week coming is v busy but I’ll have a try . 🐇

LOVE this. I have a lot of blueberries, raspberries, blackberries and boysenberries. I've been rethinking my growing space and this may just be the right idea to pen them in.
Since your new cage is metal, what kind of netting will you use and how will it be attached? I agree with one commenter that birds will get caught in it - especially hummers - but you can't really go much smaller without excluding pollinators.

Looks gorgeous. But I would need one so much bigger!
That netting is great until things get caught in it. I've had cats' claws and hen feet tangled in it.
Worst is the extremely venomous tiger snakes who get terribly cross when they tried themselves through it.

I planted over a hundred wild cherry (Prunus Adium) in my shelter belt around 40 years ago and amazingly some of them produce really delicious quite large cherries. The birds share them with us - as they are now huge trees there are thousands of fruit and birds! A real bonus I never anticipated 🐇
