- Amalah asked me for it and here it is, my 9-year-old's VERY FIRST cooking show, with no adult help! Should I correct the spelling of "desserts" or leave it not-so-perfect? This will be Amalah's bi-weekly journey into becoming a professional baker. How long will that journey take? Who cares?! The ride is gonna be fun!
Here’s the full recipe for Candy Cane Cookies:
1 cup sugar
2/3 cup Margarine, softened
2 Large Eggs
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1 teaspoon almond extract
3 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon Baking Powder
1½ teaspoon red food coloring
1. Beat sugar and margarine in large bowl with mixer at medium speed until creamy. Beat in egg, vanilla and almond extracts. Mix flour and baking powder; stir into margarine mixture.
2. Divide dough in half; tint half with red food coloring. Wrap each half and refrigerate at least 2 hours.
3. Divide each half into 32 pieces. Roll each piece into a 5-inch rope. Twist 1 red and 1 white rope together and bend 1 end to form candy cane shape. Place on ungreased baking sheets.
4. Bake in preheated 350°F oven for 8 to 10 minutes or just until set and lightly golden. Remove from sheets; cool on wire racks. Store in airtight container.

I am so proud of Amalah!! She worked it out, did some top level troubleshooting, and had a finished product. 👏👏👏
She did a good job. Next time help her with reading the directions - creaming the butter first - letting it rest for 30 minutes before baking. She'll get the hang of the eggs with some practice. We all have to start somewhere and she did great!
She'll be ready to make the black cake for the holidays next year!
