What Happened To Analog Horror?

  • Analog horror is an internet-born genre of horror, and in its hayday, it was up there with the likes of Slenderman and FNAF. So, how did it become so big, and maybe even more pressingly, what happened that caused it to fall into the annals of webhistory? What happened to analog horror?
⚠ This video contains heavy topics like fictional gun violence and the sexual harassment of minors.
Interestingly, I'm somewhat inspired by gomotion's The Faults of Analog Horror; despite Jodie being a self-proclaimed not-expert, she landed the hammer on the nail pretty well, and I figured as someone who has been a fan of the genre since the Film Theory first dropped, I probably had a good eye for the topic.
That said, if you enjoy, please, I beg you, to consider donating on Patreon, because due to a bunch of reasons, this video isn't monetized. So, if you could support the channel in whatever way you can, it would mean a lot.

Massive respect for not putting any jumpscares in the video. Nice essay!

Good summation. As someone who has trafficked in and out of the genre, I still believe that the ground is still very fertile. Part of the problem, of course, is the medium itself; the Internet tends to reward mindnumbing Sameness and copycat-ism, so it's easier to follow the leader than it is to tread new and potentially interesting territory.

Ngl, I can't help but think of Spamton reading this, your natural voice just fits the character
Speaking of Deltarune, I wanna see an analog horror for Jevil, if he really wanted to, he could be an absolute threat and he'd have to be locked up for something

I love the analog horror genre, but it needs a revamp. Too many silent, text-based stories in the genre, and frankly they put me to sleep. Some of them are nothing more than PowerPoint presentations run through a VHS filter. We need a more dialogue heavy, video content based formula. Action without overuse of jump scares. Some local access program stuff, but with voiceovers. The genre has gotten too quiet recently. The found footage element needs to resurface before AH dies out.

Nostalgic? You are talking about a couple of years ago as "nostalgic?"

Nostalgic in the sense of the old VHS tapes that I grew up with in my youth - the genre itself isn't nostalgic, but it makes me nostalgic. I don't think I'm alone for that.
