And this, one of my favourite Marcus Aurelius quotes:
“If anyone can refute me-show me I’m making a mistake or looking at things from the wrong perspective-I’ll gladly change. It’s the truth I’m after, and the truth never harmed anyone. What harms us is to persist in self-deceit and ignorance.”

Resolving cognitive dissonance is very painfull potentially. The willingness to change one's own mind is a very powerful psychological tool...and it prevents a lot of unneccessary mental anguish.
Pain becomes courage. Someone admitting they are wrong is a painful process. Yet it is also courageous. The enlightenment that accompanies new knowledge is in and of itself...a courageous act.

Five years ago I started on my "quest" To build a home myself for my wife and I after renting our entire lives. I turn 65 next month. Much easier said than done! We bought an acre and a half of "raw" land 750 miles away from where we live. I remember one trip early on. I was driving by myself to go work on the property. It was in the middle of the Mojave desert and I was feeling totally spent and started questioning what I was doing. I said to myself "What the fuck are you doing?" "What the fuck are you thinking?" I pulled over into a rest stop and I was full of emotion (To you men out there this means I was crying) If there had been a way to turn around I probably would have done it. I sat there for about 30 minutes trying to decide if I should just turn around and say "Fuck it" , Suddenly a calmness came over me. I said to myself. "This is it Bud. this is the moment. this is the jumping off point. You have to jump even though you can't see the other side." It was a turning point in my life. I just raised our Timber Frame in October 2020. Heading back in three weeks to get the roof on. I've never looked back.

I see it as having wise older men in my life who can help guide me. I only had one wise man in my life and it was not my Father and when he was in my life I was in my early 20's and a complete stubborn knucklehead. As of now im 31 years old and I am trying to apply the stoic philosophy to my daily life. It is definitely easier said than done but I am glad I found it.
