For the subjective opinion it’s analog 2.0… most people don’t care about the latency issue. I fly fast and use several fast corrections during each flight with no issues with Dji. Imo the latency is a placebo effect. That being said I bought the hdzero setup and sold it in 2 months time. It’s a GOOD product but had no home in my fleet.

I agree.. If the vtx was smaller, if it had audio and the goggles were out, it would be a done deal. I get what you mean with going up against giants like DJI or Fatshark now, but HDZero has that underdog passion, which the community really digs. That's where Carl did great. He's letting the community do testing, and he's taking the feedback and actually using it. Which feels like the opposite of what Fatshark did, considering their vtx is 25x25 mounting, 5s capable goggles, yadda yadda 1st world problems, you get it.. It's like they asked the community what they wanted, then did the opposite lol. I like that Carl Zhou is interested in what fpv pilots want.

    • @jaysonrees738
      @jaysonrees738 Před rokem +1

Yeah, there's currently a lot of compromise with HDZ. I really enjoyed the audio in DVR footage, especially when I stuff the mic into a piece of foam. Then there's all the downsides to the VTX units. You've got low output on most of them, they get insanely hot even at 0mW, and they're kinda big. Sorta makes me wish there was a way to get an advanced version of analog. That said, the image is worth all the trouble.

Also tried DJI setup- and it's meh. I though it would look much better since everyone is so happy about it. I've seen some compression artifacts even on 50mbit mode, too dark shadows under the trees (Vista setup) And i'm even not saying about variable latency
Also the helmet is made for aliens, ultra uncomfortable and pretty heavy.

the open source part is actually big. because divimath/hdzero wants to sell mainly the chipsets in the future and every manufacturer who wants to develop an compatible vtx/camera is able to use a community driven reference design. it basically opens a whole new ecosystem - where you don't have to relie on one manufacturer to purchase your stuff from.

@@derrogers it's a bad design on their part, but I'm guessing they did it for the same reason that manufacturers made things like tv/vcr combos. They know that a ton of people won't care that it's a horrible idea, because it's a smaller product that serves both needs. Or computer motherboards with built in graphics cards and no option to add a 3rd party card. The larger part of their market doesn't care.
But, freestyle FPV is not a huge market anyway. Designing aio products that don't support future upgrades seems like a VeryBadIdea for this market. Then again, things like aio FC/ESC/RX/VTX boards do sell for whoops. And it seems like a great idea until you realize you can't upgrade that spi ELRS Rx without a full betaflight firmware update that THEY built based on a custom target, etc. Proprietary hardware is absolute ass

In the car of some of those AIO boards, they've crippled their usefulness by integrating the Rx firmware into the firmware for the FC. Fine, if you're not worried about upgrading either betaflight or the RX Independent from one another. ELRS upgrade path moves WAY too quickly for that to be a good solution, since it's still in a state of relative infancy compared to long standing Rx protocols

That old Sharkbyte receiver does actually fit right into the original HDO2 case. I never remove it, not even when I'm out with an analogue quad. Based on that, I assume the new version will fit as well.
I switched from analogue to HDZero, so no experience with DJI, but I LOVE the detail and latency (I finally don't crash into branches I didn't even see). I usually fly at the edge of a forest, around bushes and long grass, and I fit through gaps that I don't even dare go close to with analogue. :D
The availability was awful last year, when they broke up with Fatshark, I waited months for a VTX, but it's pretty good now, apart from the receiver.

  • @DarrenAllatt

    Hey Steele,
HDZero are making the VRX now, which is available to buy and connect to your existing goggles.
HDZ will be releasing the goggle later this year.
Pricing is comparable to DJI for the VTX and Camera. However it’s cheaper to get into if you have existing Analog goggles. More expensive if you start from scratch.
    VTX’s are “smaller”
    - The 1W VTX you tried for Freestyle Quads,
    - 200mw Whoop VTX that works on 1S,
    - Race VTX is better designed for racing,
HDZ is available on 65mm and 75mm whoops that don’t have much of a weight penalty
    Camera options are
    - HDZ Runcam Micro V2
    - HDZ Runcam Nano (same sensor as v2)
    - Foxeer Digisight v3
The easiest way to describe it is high resolution analog with full 720p
The other key thing to note fixed latency which is why you get the rainbow breakup

And the quality is like analog at it's best. I love it. My confidence while flying it was massively boosted as well because I could see wtf I was flying around. My favorite clip from my first flight with it was of me powerlooping a power line from the street to the house and snacking the line square on as I came over and down. (New quad frame that handles like a whale because it's not at all tuned yet)
In my goggles I could actually see the individual twists in the power line during the crash. I was like "THAT'S FUCKING AWESOME! I hope I didn't destroy this brand new shit, but it looked great".
During that same run, I crept through the branches of a tree with barely enough room for the quad and was able to see every leaf and twig clearly enough that it was a clean pass through fairly dense obstacles. Three thumbs up.
I never fly much further away than I want to walk to retrieve my smoking pile of destruction if I crash, so the race and whoop 200mw VTX is plenty powerful enough for my needs. Long range flight isn't my thing. But I was still getting a decent signal directly in front of me about 150 yards away and on the other side of power lines and a sheet metal roof.

It took me a long time to figure out a replacement, but find using my remaining regulator board to feed a secondary BEC at 7 volts and then feeding my VTX @ 5volts with everything grounded to itself and a flywoo mic mostly makes up for it. It’s not ‘better’ cause it’s a lot of work to do, but the video has been solid since I started making it and at least I can still mostly unplug and repair as needed without soldering to the FC. But I know people aren’t as patient as I am to make such a thing lol. @@creationlabsinc.189 It isn't subjective. BF can do anything KISS can do, but KISS can't do all that BF can. Sure, some projects stall, like OpenTX, but it's not like it's gone, you can still use it if you want. If you do want improvements you can use EdgeTX. It's called a fork.

Steele, have you ever considered manufacturing your own special step down converter power board to replaced the Impulse RC one? It would be great if we can get different versions and sizes for smaller quads making analog perfection actually attainable for those who still run it, I fly both dji and analog and would love a reliable solution. Maybe something built into a vtx or esc, or a separate board, I don't think theres much demand for actual OSD boards nowadays. It would be especially cool if a solution like this can be made small enough to work on small toothpicks where digital isnt an option without adding a lot of weight relative to their size.

Flying for about 1.5 years on fatshark scouts, starting to get frustrated with scraggle/clarity as i get better with my flying and go into tighter spots.I cant afford to upgrade my fatshark scouts right now, but when i can afford it this might be the new setup. Its almost good for me that i cant afford the upgrade now cus theres alot of new options making it hard to choose. hopefully it will be sorted out and tested by next summer and it will be a bit easier for me to decide.

Development will get there eventually on the size of the hardware, the goggles, audio, etc. We’ve already seen hardware specifically developed on the basis of popular demand. I wish every company listened so well to their customer base, but only HDzero does. I don’t fly bandos very often so I’m pretty happy to support this format.
Either way: for now it still easily looks way better than the Walksnail video you posted the other week. I’d recommend beginners to go with an analog whoop or something like that, and not buy anything digital till at least the end of the year considering the relationship between Caddx and DJI if there is any left, and all things coming out until that time: between the current DJI, Walksnail, the HDzero goggles (that also does analog) and DJI v3.

Try the new whoop board and camera. Tiny but good at 200mw. Just get a module to add to your backup goggle fly it some. with a TPU mount it pops off the goggle for storage. Still smaller than DJI. Maybe Carl can keep the CCP out of it too.

I point your attention to the diopter and adjustment knobs. IMO, the breakup happened somewhere in that phase, I think HDZero already has what they need on the goggles side to
