✎ When del Toro was about eight years old, he began experimenting with his father's Super 8 camera, making short films with Planet of the Apes toys and other objects. Del Toro has directed a wide variety of films, from comic book adaptations (Blade II, Hellboy) to historical fantasy and horror films. In 2009, del Toro's first novel, The Strain, was released. It is the first part of an apocalyptic vampire trilogy co-authored by del Toro and Chuck Hogan. In his filmmaking career, del Toro has alternated between Spanish-language dark fantasy pieces, and more mainstream American action movies. He spent 10 years as a special-effects make-up designer and formed his own company, Necropia. Del Toro is scheduled to direct three films for Universal: Frankenstein; a new adaptation of Slaughterhouse-Five; and Drood. His project Trollhunters was released to great acclaim on Netflix and "is tracking to be its most-watched kids original ever. Del Toro is currently directing a cold-war drama film The Shape of Water.

That last bonus video was so important to why Guillermo is an amazing director. The Shape of Water was made on a budget of only $20 million and it looks phenomenal. Those restrictions are what helps us learn how to be creative, think out of the box and be a game changer. Great video.

Love what he said about The Little Mermaid. That's what I've tried to explain to people--the ending in the real story is so different and the whole point is the sacrifice she makes, not the happily ever after. I love happily ever after, but I also love being true to the story and the characters.

I believe the ART of Storytelling is "Show me, don't Tell me" In Movie it is just more physically visual and tangible. In writing you use the Mind. Possibly the greatest efx artist is your own imagination. If the author can't engage with it they fail. If you can't convert that (idea) of the image to something tangible i believe you fail yourself and your audience.

Wow. This was great. Financially I failed at so many things I thought were accomplishments that I don't look back and see success. I gave up. Fortunately, I've found a passion again. I'm struggling with something that is beyond my abilities. Funny to be on the side of what I consider to be great failure and still have something in common with a filmmaker and storyteller I've admired for years. Finding passion again is amazing.

What he describes as "lucid dreaming" is actually hypnopompic hallucinations, which is definitely terrifying if you allow it to be.

All of these are great. However, the best one is "Prove them wrong". I love when Del Toro stated "Show us, don't tell us" as too many people give up after the naysayers rail against your idea. Prove them wrong and even if you fail, at least you did it.

I completely agree, so many movies when you hear about them, you realise they didn't follow the story...I love Tim Burton, and i like lots of other directors, and i love fantasy, but I've always maintained that reality is better, and more fun, because you can live it. Yeah okay, a fantasy book isn't true, but you should at least try your best to make your film as close to the book as possible. I always find it so annoying that film makers don't do that.

This all very romanticized and beautiful advice but it's useless. Discipline yourself and work everyday on the thing you love. Even when you dont want to, becuase you will be competing with someone who will work everyday. Know your genre, know the people who are the leaders of it. Know thyself.
