- After the Battle of Sluys in 1340, King Edward III of England returned to England where he had three million arrows manufactured as well as new silver coins minted and all other kinds of war materials prepared. He planned to invade France, and this time to get off the boats. Most sources agree that he also brought several primitive cannons that probably fired stones or iron shot.

On July 12, 1346 King Edward and his army of mostly longbow archers as well as his eldest son, the "Black Prince" Edward arrived at the coast of France and disembarked at Saint-Vaast-la-Hougue without much resistance. They spent the next month marching towards Paris, pillaging as they went, before turning north and along the Somme River, pursued by a much larger French army led by King Phillip VI. With the French army was a large contingent of Italian mercenary crossbow archers who were all called Genoese by the French. Blind King John of Bohemia and a group of knights also joined the French army. King John would perish in the next day's battle. King Phillip would be wounded.
The English stopped and rested for a day near the village of Crecy, selecting a low ridge to form a line with two wedges of archers at each end, and the dismounted knights massed in the middle. The next day the French caught up and began to arrive in the plain at the foot of the hill. It was August 26, 1346.
After a brief thunderstorm, the crossbow archers bowstrings were wet, and loose. The English archers had kept their bows covered and dry during the rain. The French King ordered his army not to advance, and to stop and rest for the night before offering battle the next day. But French knights started to advance and even King Phillip changed his mind when he saw how impudent the English looked up on the small hill they occupied. So he ordered the crossbow archers to advance and begin firing. He told them to advance without first having their large wooden shields brought up from the rear of the army. So they advanced and released their first volley into the English lines without protection. Some sources say that they discharged their bolts early because they were startled by the firing of English cannons, which did little damage, but were an unfamiliar sound and sight to people of the time.
The crossbow bolts fell short of the English, and in response the English longbows began to unleash volley after volley of deadly arrows that fell into the line of Italian crossbow archers. The Italians broke and fled, until they ran into the lines of French knights behind them, who were disgusted by the archers' cowardice. Thanks to / gaudrioleproduction1 from France for providing the voice of the French knight who orders a massacre, and a charge right over the retreating Italian crossbow archers.
The French mounted knights charged the English lines in wave after wave, and the so did the dismounted men at arms. The English archers disabled the knights before they ever reached the English, by shooting the French knights' lightly armored horses instead of the knights, whose armor rendered them mostly impervious to the arrows.
Finally by evening King Phillip was persuaded to flee with some retainers, as the battle was lost for the French. - Hry
It’s been since either late 2014 or early 2015 that I stumbled across this masterpiece and I still to this day consider it one of the greatest Lego battle stop motions of all time. Fantastic job.
when you know all the french duchies and enjoy figuring out where the knights are from due to their shields
Yea
As someone who played for countless hours with my medieval lego armies as a kid, this brought a big smile to my face. Brilliant.

Insanely good quality videos. I can’t comprehend how hard it would be to animate so many minifigures at once, I struggle with four! Unbelievably good content, Dictator
They are not good they are perfect
Since I'm Czech this battle has a big significance to me. Our king John of Bohemia fought in this battle. He fought on the French side, on the side which lost. But what makes me proud about this battle is that although our king was blind and he knew there's no chance to win, he ordered his knights to take him right to the middle of battlefield so his sword could speak for the last time. When doing this he said : "Toho bohdá nebude, aby český král z boje utíkal!" which means something like "God willing, it will never happen that a Bohemian king runs from a fight!"
My biggest respect to all warriors whou fought and died on both sides!
Edward the Black Prince supposedly came upon the slain king's body, and took the ostrich feathers from his helm as a sign of respect. From then on, the Prince of Wales's heraldic badge consists of 3 white feathers with the motto "Ich Dien" (I serve).
ReonMagnum You're right, but I think it was peacock feathers :) But I'm not sure...
Darth Urruz most likely. Im not sure whether medieval knights knew what an ostrich was
ReonMagnum In german ?
Why was a Bohemian king fighting in a battle 2500 miles from home?
This is an epic masterpiece on a memorable scale. I watch this film over and over again without tiring. Thank you for returning us to earlier and happier years.
lesson of the day- Don't mess with England's Longbowmen
What about Patay?
@WJ Animations and Gaming Not really penetrate any army but good enough to not be trifled with
0:28-0:29 bad luck Brian the only archer of the 60 there hit by every arrow lol and this is probably one of the best you have done...so far ;D keep up the awesome work
I love the sound effects you used for the long bows and cross bows, very satisfying.
0:13 that is literally an armoured hill.
A masterpiece by Brick Dictator. This one deserves multiple Oscar nominations!
Of note: the final scene seems to encompass the poignant reality...that a victory over slain human beings is somehow less than glorious.
If you're wondering what the French mounted knight said , it was : Kill me this rabble! (The crossbow men)
This has to be one of the best, most informative and also amusing channels on youtube. Ty
Archers op pls nurf
Alton Bishop lol that's what happened in the war, the French were no match for the English crossbows.
ESRgaming 123
The English longbows you mean
Nubian42 yes, sorry
In all honesty Long bows weren't actually all that good at killing knights. I'd say it was more the muddy terrain and lack of horse barding that defeated the French knight's charge at Crecy, more than specifically the longbow but it helped.
Fun fact: Italy didn't exist, the crossbowmen were Genoese, from the Republic of Genoa, today it is in Italy, but Italy was united in 1861.
By the way the animations are cool.
GG!
Correct, but the idea of Italy exist since the romans and who lived in the peninsula since middle age was called italian
Even though the french at Crecy knew that their crossbowmen were Genovesi, when they're not sure call someone from the italian peninsula italian, or belonged to a place or a real important italian city (for example Venetian, Milanese ecc), although he didn't come from here
Very good! I like how you switch faces a lot to really give the viewer their expressions!
How a simple piece of wood, crafted in the most beautiful fashion dominated most of medieval Europe, a struck fear into England's enemies. The longbow!
Into King Edward's enemies*
Jukelo, No, King Henry used it at Agincourt. During the Scottish independence King Edward used it (not Edward III). During the War of the Roses both Lancaster and York used it, and until the first muskets came out in the 17th century England used the Longbow in almost every war not just at Crecy.
France are the winner ! Longbow it's just a shit !
One word... EPIC

Einfach nur geil, wie du das alles machst. Bestimmt viel Aufwand?
Man, I wish I had enough lego to make something like this. Awesome channel btw, love it :)
Ever thought of doing a D-Day landings vid?
Eh, that's kind of over used. He should think about doing WW1.

great video
"The Italians broke and fled, until they ran into the lines of French knights behind them, who were disgusted by the archers' cowardice."
Cowardice ... they were just getting stuffed with english arrows, for crying out loud.
God, do I hate that part of the medieval mentality. :-P
Briseur De Lance I hate all parts of the medieval mentality
Briseur De Lance Especialy when you know the chilvary codex.
Fight only knights for honnors and take the rancon or money change...
Brick Dictator What is the music called?
It's not medieval mentality to despise cowardice and a lack of professionalism in soldiers. The Italians broke and ran because they were a poorly trained rabble. When you go to war you at least expect the men next to you to have the guts to do their jobs. Something you obviously know nothing about.
@@brictator really then why did you make this video idiot? You both obviously know little to nothing about the middle ages except for what you've seen on game of thrones which is made up by a penis obsessed deviant who knows even less than you do. I suggest you both read a few books instead of playing with toys.
Out of all the vids you have done... This one is my favorite'
Nigel S. thanks. our all time favorite brickfilm is still war of the lego guys III
I have seen war of the Lego guys 3, (very funny) I love the voices too lol, it's an old vid though...
